Pro's from the Palace (#151) - The Year End Palace Awards for 2006
» Reported by Mike Siciliano of WrestleView.com
» On Saturday, December 30, 2006 at 11:34 PM EST

Hello, everyone. Happy New Year to each and everyone of my readers. With all that out of the way, it's time for the end of the year award ceremony. Be advised that I did not take in to count the ENTIRE SPECTRUM of the year, so if I missed something, and you'd like it mentioned, drop me a line, and I'll either add it here, or if I get enough, make another whole chapter of the Palace Awards.

Ok. Here we go. There are no limits, it's just random idiocy from one man's brain.

The FOOT IN MOUTH award is for me regarding the Cryme Tyme tag team. Let's be honest, I haven't seen much of them on Raw, but I did just recently catch their schtick with Lita at Survivor Series, and it may be partially that I despise Lita, or otherwise, but I found it funny as hell. I think the best part was robbing JBL blind of his $100. Yeah, the buildup was bad, from my opinion, but for now, it seems to be working. So, I admit, I was wrong.

The REUNIONS ROCK award goes to three teams. MNM, The Hardy Boyz, and the Brothers of Destruction. For the latter, it looks like the beginning of a resurgance of the tag team division, and hopefully, creative will shut Vince up, and let these teams do what they do best, and that is compete. For MNM, well, sorry Joey Mercury, when your face meets a ladder like it did, the face will not win. See you in 3 months, kid. (I read a report that Vince is adamant about not keeping MNM and the Hardyz together, and that, my friends, is stupid, if you ask me.)

The BAD IDEA award goes to the main event at Cyber Sunday. The champion of champions match. How fitting is it, that at the next major pay per view, one month later, the so called champion of champions, King Booker, is beaten by Batista. What does that do to the validity of this main event match? Two words. Absolutely everything. It devalues the prestige of the main event of a Raw PPV, and makes the participants look bad in the process. Nice work, creative. Well done.

The BEST TURNAROUND of 2006 goes to Jimmy Rave. Nana leaves ROH while Rave is touring with another company, and Rave returns to TP, and a shower of losses. He then upsets Homicide at Time to Man Up, and has turned in to the unstoppable force that ROH and the pundints of the wrestling world thought he could be. His performance at Final Battle was impressive, to say the least. I think Rave will be wearing ROH gold sooner, rather than later. But from where he was when the Embassy left to now, he deserves honorary mention here.

The BEST MISTAKE award - goes to NBC for airing something that looked like a wrestling show called Saturday Night's Main Event. The Eighties called, they want their show back.

The BEST SNOW JOB award - goes to Kurt Angle. Why? Think about it.

The MOST RIDICULOUS USE OF A TAG TEAM TITLE award goes to the geniuses who booked this scenario. Kane & The Big Show are an unstoppable duo as World tag team champs, defeating Carlito & Masters at Wrestlemania 22. ONE NIGHT LATER, on Raw, they lose the title to a bunch of recent callups from OVW dressed as male cheerleaders, the Spirit Squad. Nicely done devaluing the reputation of two monsters united as a tag team titlist.

The SHORTEST MAIN EVENTER award goes to RVD for his ridiculously idiotic stupid move in Ohio while holding the belts of two brands of WWE. Nicely done, dude. Here's a pop to the fact that it'll be a cold day in hell before you see those titles again.

The YAWN OF THE YEAR award goes to Vince McMahon at Wrestlemania, again. Ric Flair, Hulk Hogan, Shawn Michaels, and now potentially Mick Foley. Hey, Vince, what are you trying to do, create the wrestling version of Rocky Balboa? Word of advice, pal, it won't work.

The OOPS, I DID IT AGAIN award goes to the storylines involving Eddie Guerrero's tragic loss. WWE used this till the cows came home, and then some, from the storyline with Rey Mysterio and now currently with Chris Benoit involving Chavo and Eddie's widow, Vickie. When will the WWE let Eddie Guerrero, a true legend and icon of the business, rest in peace?

The I'LL BOOK ANYONE award goes to Shawn Michaels' tag team partner at Backlash, "God." Enough said, I hope.

The GIMMICK THAT WILL NEVER DIE award goes to Umaga. He has gotten a push of epic proportions, especially since when he debuted, I suspected in a Palace column that Ric Flair would make this specimen tap out like a "drunk sissy."

The BEST MINOR MAJOR Pay Per View Award goes to the returning King of the Ring tournament. And to think, from this so called jewel of WWE PPVs gave us the birth of the so called English accented King Booker. Excuse me, while I go vomit.

The MOST PREDICTED RETURN award goes to Low Ki for his return to TNA as Senshi at Lockdown. When Jushin Liger pulled out of Lockdown, and Christopher Daniels had no opponent, who else didn't think Triple X would have a reunion of sorts at this time? Ki had just departed ROH recently, he finished his tours of NOAH, and was relatively inactive. It was the right piece for the right puzzle.

The BIGGEST PET PEEVE award goes to TNA and its absolutely hideous way they distribute their DVDs nationally, making it virtually impossible to find their titles when they are released. Trust me, I've whined about this for months this past year.

The BIGGEST LIVE SURPRISE award was when I saw the NWA Champion Christian Cage and the ROH Champ Bryan Danielson engage in a nice battle of insults in Lake Grove at How We Roll. I only wish the tag match between the champs, Cabana & Daniels was as emotional as some of the promo work that these four men conducted.

The BEST I HAVE EVER SEEN in a LIVE SHOW award goes to Ring of Honor for their performance as a company at Final Battle 2006.

The FUTURE of Pro Wrestling Awards goes to CM Punk in ECW by a landslide, Ken Kennedy on Smackdown, and Samoa Joe & Austin Aries in TNA and ROH respectively. Punk is just that damn good. He can and probably will carry a brand on his shoulders, sooner more than likely than later. Nobody is a better promoter than Mr. Kennedy. He reminds me of a young Nature Boy, and that is one hell of a comparison. Joe & Aries are two of the best grapplers I have seen come through the ROH and TNA ranks, and truth be told, there is a lot of up side for both of those men.

The VINCE McMAHON APPRECIATION fan club members include Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Batista, and John Cena. Angle for the snowjob he pulled over Vince's eyes when he defected. Benoit and Batista for being seriously hurt and battered at the hands of an oaf like Mark Henry, and Cena for having to deal with a talentless wanna be musician in a wrestling ring.

The STORY THAT WON'T DIE award goes to the speculators that think Low Ki is coming back to Ring of Honor. Please stop. It's done. If he comes back, terrific. If he didn't make his presence known at Final Battle when Homicide won the World title, then he's done with ROH, period.

The HARDEST HITTERS award goes to the Briscoe Brothers. Nobody, and I mean, nobody, hits harder and strikes harder than the team from Sandy Fork, Delaware.

The MEN THAT ARE WORTH THE HYPE awards go to Davey Richards from ROH, CM Punk from ECW, Christopher Daniels from ROH and TNA, and KENTA from ROH and NOAH. All of these men have seriously impressed me in their work, and I see nothing but bigger and better for them as the year begins.

The WHY DID I DO THIS? award goes to James "Jamie Noble" Gibson. He has to be wondering why he went back to WWE. He was an ROH world champion, took the money, and went to WWE, and after a brief run as Kid Kash's tag team partner, has done absolutely zero since.

The WHAT DOES ROH MEAN award goes to Paul London and Brian Kendrick. I don't think either one of these men remember their roots very well, especially after this current reign they have enjoyed as WWE tag team champions.

The STORY THAT DOES NOT DIE, but SHOULD award is the X Division vs. Kevin Nash "feud" and the blossoming Paparazzi Championship Series. Nash, retire. Shelley, get a clue. TNA, get a life.

The HOW TO PISS OFF THE PALACE DWELLER award will happen on January 1st, 2007, at around 10:50pm EST when John Cena gets in to the ring with a wanna be rapper from Miami who can't find any talent if it slapped him across the face.

Ok. Here is a batch. Let's see yours.
