Pro's from the Palace (#151) - John Cena vs. Kevin Federline: Grumble
On Thursday, January 4, 2007 at 11:41 AM EST You know, I sit here and ponder a lot of things during the course of my day, but when my kids read the newspaper, and take the time out of their lives to talk to me about the coverage this shame of a match between the WWE Champion and this so called talent wanna be punk bitch, I guess it's time to flame on, and go for broke.
Ok. I should've guessed that there was going to be interference. I didn't think so, I thought somewhere in the picture, Nitro would get involved, but Cena would triumph, because quite frankly, do you need this type of publicity? Kevin Federline, 150 pounds soaking wet, with more children than I have brain cells, defeated the champion of World Wrestling Entertainment in the main event of WWE's flagship show.
Vince McMahon has indeed lost his mind.
Now, I'll try and paint the broad picture. Did Cena get his revenge? Sure. Did the crowd go home happy that night from Raw? Sure. Did WWE reap the benefits of Federline's "win" by some major news coverage, whether it be legitimate or "kicker style", as it were? Sure. But, the facts remain. A NON WRESTLER defeated your company's champion, Vince. What does that say for the prestige of your company's championship?
Not too damn much.
Everybody knows I am a fan of John Cena. Everybody who reads this column KNOWS that I hated this whole involvement with Kevin Federline. I'm a fool for not seeing how Vince played this thing out, and I admit it. But, as much benefit as WWE may be getting out of this angle, you cannot sit here and tell me that it's the right thing for business, long term. It can't be.
How do you think this makes John Cena feel? He has gone through the ringer with this entire company on his back, and has to suffer the indignancy of being pinned to the mat for a three count by this dweeb. Someone that Cena could probably beat with one hand tied behind his back, and he had to take the fall. It makes me sick. And, I don't give a damn what Cena says in public, or private, or anything like that. This thing has to be eating him alive. He's been given the responsibility of carrying a multi-billion dollar corporation on his shoulders, and this is how the powers that be paid back his effort. Ridiculous.
But, the real damage is to the prestige of the title. Champions like the Iron Sheik, Hulk Hogan, Bruno Sammartino, and others should be screaming with fury at the fact that Vince McMahon has turned the richest prize in sports entertainment in to nothing more than a circus act.
I am sickened by this. Not because of the fact that Vince is trying whatever he can do to make money, sell tickets, and garner publicity. I am sickened by this because I am anxious to witness the product be clean, fresh, and new, not sloppy, dirty, and convoluted. This whole angle with Nitro, Federline, and Umaga is nothing more than convoluted garbage.
And that is just one man's opinion.
