Kevin Kleinrock Interview: Producer of Wrestling Society X on big debut
On Friday, January 26, 2007 at 5:37 PM EST Monday Night Mayhem sent in the following recap:
The producer of MTV's Wrestling Society X, the Vice President of Big Vision Entertainment, & one of the influential forces in the now-defunct XPW, Kevin Kleinrock, was one of the special guests on this past week's edition (1/22/07) of Monday Night Mayhem (w/The Big Mosh & Blade), which can be heard in streaming audio every week (and live at 9PM ET/8PM CT every Monday night) exclusively on The Monday Night Mayhem Radio Network (www.MondayNightMayhem.com, www.ObsessedWithWrestling.com, www.AllWNYRadio.com, & www.AudioWrestling.com -- your official home of "The Spring Break Incident" Video-On-Demand, featuring former WWE Diva, Stacy Keibler).
Kevin's interview is now available to hear for FREE in Real Audio!
Here are some of the highlights from the interview conducted by The Big Mosh & Blade (courtesy: Mayhem listener, PWUSandman41):
The interview begins with Mosh jokingly asking about "the guy who made the infamous ahhhhh call" in the now-defiunct XPW, and how he's doing. Well, Kris Kloss is still around, and Kevin said that Kriss will be the play-by-play man for Wrestling Society X (debuting with a special preview episode tonight at 11PM ET), and that Kloss will definitely be doing a different style than what he did in his time in XPW.
Reflecting on The Mayhem's five-year anniversary (airing Monday night, February 5th @ 8PM ET/7PM CT), Mosh mentioned about the show's first "road trip," which ironically was to the Golden Dome in Monaca, PA for the last XPW event. Mosh & Blade asked Kevin what he thinks caused the downfall of XPW. As an important footnote, Kevin believes that the executive producer for WSX actually now owns the rights & footage from XPW. Kleinrock said the final nail in the coffin was the much-publicized legal trouble, which Rob Black is still battling to this day. Kevin said they did not know that would be the last show, but they simply could not afford to do any more shows. When the legal situation happened, the decisions were made to close & shut down XPW.
Mosh, Blade, & The Angry Hero brought up the time when the first press release came out about "wrestling returning to MTV," and how numerous critics began bashing it right off the bat. Will those very individuals be silenced in the coming hours? Tune in to MTV, beginning at 11PM ET tonight, and every Tuesday night thereafter.
The Angry Hero asked what Wrestling Society X is going to do to be better than what WWF's "Sunday Night Heat" did when they on MTV. With regards to the "haters" who bashed the product off the bat, which he wished to touch on, some people's first gut reaction was "what does MTV know about wrestling? And its probably going to be crap." However, they did not realize that people who knew professional wrestling were the ones actually behind the show, and it wasn't just MTV trying to bring in a wrestling company. Kleinrock stated that the goal of the show is to not only bring success to MTV, but to help bring back the interest in the wrestling business. Kevin said that people started to get more into MTV's WSX after they saw the roster lister filled with talented indivduals: such as Ruckus, New Jack, Nate Webb, & many other great wrestlers. He does feel that Wrestling Society X will be in a prime-time lineup with several other great shows that have brought tremendous success to MTV.
Kleinrock wished to go on record that it is up to MTV who signs the music & bands for the show, not a personal decision amongst himself or the wrestlers.
Teddy Hart was the next topic of coversation, with The Angry Hero saying that Teddy Hart is "off the wall" (in a positive, major way), giving him credit for some of the success from the Ballpark Brawl shows in Western New York. Kevin said that there are a lot of guys on the roster giving the fans things that they have never seen before or are not seeing in WWE or TNA, and that Teddy brings a big variety of aerial moves to WSX.
In closing, The Mayhem Crew & Kevin talked about WSX being on in Canada, and Kevin said that it was not confirmed that they would be debuting on MTV Canada. It was a surprise when they found out they would not be on MTV Canada, because they heard from a different source that they would be on the station. He added that he thinks the show over time will be on internationally in new markets, and that fans who are interested in seeing WSX go national (or international) should call up their station and help get it on their television screens. I want my WSX!
More goodness is included in this 30+ minute interview with Kevin, including: whether or not he sees a second season of WSX in the future, which of the newly released wrestlers from the WWE he would like to sign for Wrestling Society X, and how & where you can find the latest & best DVD's from Big Vision Entertainment (log onto www.BigVisionEntertainment.com), including the Hardy Boyz Insider Series, the new CM Punk title, as well as the newly, revamped "Heroes Of World Class" documentary.
