Pro's from the Palace (#161) - Review of Wrestling Society X (Opinion)
On Wednesday, January 31, 2007 at 9:39 AM EST This will be a little quick for two reasons. A, I have a splitting headache from a day from hell at the job, and B, there just isn't a lot to talk about with a 30 minute program.
Yep, I watched Wrestling Society X last night. Well, sort of. I was able to catch the full thing on MTV.com. I think that's freaking terrific. Full episode on the website. Yeah, the screen's 6 inches, but hell, I'm not picky, I was interested to see the product, and I didn't think I'd get the chance to do so so soon.
Sydal vs. Evans. Hell, put these two guys in the ring in any fed and they're going to tear the house down. Got no problems with this match being the topper for WSX. Zakk Wylde being on the show as a musical guest is one thing, but keep him out of the damn broadcast booth, this guy had ZERO idea what the hell he was doing with a mike in his hand while not screaming in to it.
Anyway, Lizzy Valentine is a hawt tamale as well. I would like to see her eventually get in and whoop some a$$, but hey, I'm just talkin' here.
The commentators were pretty good. Not the typical heel/face commentators, just out there to put over both men and try and keep the vibe hot and fast. I was pleasantly entertained.
Truth be told, I don't remember the full substance of the match, I watched it at like 2 in the morning in the midst of a storm of hell at work, so I can't give out blow by blow descriptions of the spots by Sydal and Evans, but it was relatively clean for the most part, and surprisingly, Evans got the dupe. It was definitely a very positive opening salvo for the new brand.
The Rumble for the title contenders. Some of these names I knew, some I did not. I have seen Teddy Hart live once, and he was incredible in that performance, if he can keep his head on straight, he will be a jewel in the rough for the WSX, no question about it. New Jack on any television show is just plain dangerous, and I like the fact that MTV has the cohones to go with it, and let him "loose" as it were, and I felt really bad for Chris Hamrick, because when push came to shove, Hamrick had a bad day.
Justin Credible as the opening man in the Rumble gave WSX some instant credibility. Names like the two winners as well helped to bolster the blossoming prestige of the roster of this new brand, which has the potential to be very very good, or otherwise, I don't think there's really a middle ground here.
Now, for the but.
I gotta admit, I am a fan of the hardcore. I like the bats, the chains, the chairs, the tables, etc. An occasional electrocution can be a good thing as well, har har har, but is there such a thing as overkill? I don't remember the names on the men who took the bumps, but there was at least three different major looking "explosions" following bumps on to live wires and cages with electricity running through it. Scintillating to watch, indeed, but dangerous as hell, and honestly, when is it going over the line? I know I am contradicting myself, and I sound like a whiny bastard here, but the spot that New Jack hit on Hamrick, the splash through the table, that's hardcore, but safe. Seeing guys get enveloped in a cloud of smoke after dropping on to live electrical wiring? It's terrific to watch, but is the price too high to pay?
Anyway, Vampiro and Syxx-Pac can rumble with anyone, and whoever wins, (I don't remember the spoilers), it's instant credibility for the fledgling brand as it's first champion. For it's opening parry in to the world of pro wrestling, I would give Wrestling Society X one and a half thumbs up. Damn, do I sound corny.
Hell, it's entertaining. Isn't that what the bottom line is on the whole shooting match in this business?
Time to go.
