Pro's from the Palace (#165) - The Palace is 2 years old! (WWE PPV picks)
On Saturday, February 17, 2007 at 12:02 PM EST I just realized that I am at my 2 year anniversary of writing columns here. Damn. What a difference 2 years makes. Ok. Everybody sing Happy anniversary to me!
Don't, please. It'll only make it sound cornier than I already do. Shall we get down to business?
Let's keep the picks columns up and active with picks for tomorrow night's No Way Out.
FINLAY & LITTLE BASTARD vs. BOOGEYMAN & LITTLE BOOGEYMAN
It's kind of funny how someone who is as talented as Fit Finlay can be placed in a feud where there is absolutely no upside whatsoever. While I thought the Little Bastard thing was initially kind of stupid, it has grown on me somewhat. However, from a personal vantage point, bringing in "Little Boogeyman" just doesn't cut it for me. Maybe it can grow on me after time and experience on Smackdown, but to put it up there in a pay per view right before Wrestlemania, it just makes no sense from where I sit. I'll give the win to the Boogeyman because truth, Finlay has less to lose here. His stature will not be impacted half as much as Boogeyman's would.
WINNERS: Boogeyman & Little Boogeyman
KANE vs. KING BOOKER
I loved the segment Booker and Sharmell did last night on Smackdown. I thought it was creatively well done, and it got the picture out there of the animosity that has grown between the monster and the ruler of the Smackdown kingdom. Both men are well experienced, and definitely can put on a show that would entertain the audience. Not too sure if and when this feud ends where both men can go, but the facts are on the table, there should be an excellent story coming out of this match, and I would not mind one bit seeing the two continue their feud in a longer tenure leading up to Wrestlemania.
One other thing, while I thought initially the King gimmick with Booker was way over the top, I am happy to say that from my own vantage point, they've taken it down a significant notch and made it less obnoxious to the casual fan's viewpoint. Now, it's almost enjoyable, which means, as far as I can relate, that the Book is doing the heel thing perfectly.
WINNER: Kane
It's a pick 'em match here. Either one of them could possibly win without question. I'm taking a stab at this one.
ECW Championship
LASHLEY vs. MR. KENNEDY
Honestly, as good as Kennedy is, from the records I have read, he is in a no win situation here. WWE is trying to portray Lashley as an unstoppable champion, and that would probably mean that either A) he'll win cleanly in a hard fought matchup, or B) he'll win by DQ thanks to interference by someone from ECW, more than likely, Snitsky. This should be entertaining as Kennedy has all the talent in the world, and as much as people don't like him, I personally like Lashley's persona and athletic ability. But, bottom line, the deal is the deal, and Lashley will retain in one way, shape, or form.
WINNER: Lashley
Also, Smackdown cannot handle the loss of Ken Kennedy. It would be too traumatic from a talent standpoint.
WWE Tag Team Championship
PAUL LONDON & BRIAN KENDRICK vs. DEUCE & DOMINO (w/CHERRY)
Ok. Quickly becoming my favorite team currently is Deuce & Domino. I like London & Kendrick, a lot, but the Untouchables have really taken Smackdown by storm, as far as I can see. Are they the most technical talents out there? Hardly. But, the fact remains is that the duo is as fluid a tag team as we have seen out there in a long long time. It's obvious that the Untouchables have the number of the tag team champs, and although London & Kendrick have made themselves in to a formidable championship team, the fact is, bruisers and more ground and pound competitors give the champs a hard time. I don't think WWE is prepared to put the belts on the Untouchables yet, but there is definitely room for this feud to continue, one way or the other.
WINNERS: Deuce & Domino
I'll go ahead and put the titles on the Untouchables, but again, either one is possible here. By the way, Cherry is hot, but that's just one person's opinion.
Diva Talent Invitational
I have zero idea what is going to happen with this, as I only caught a brief glimpse of a vignette with Long and Kristal. I, unlike the general IWC, like seeing the divas, and although Jillian's singing is like nails on a chalkboard, it should be relatively entertaining.
JOHN CENA & SHAWN MICHAELS vs. BATISTA & THE UNDERTAKER
WWE has managed to put some heat between these four men, and I like it. Using Kennedy, MVP, Edge & Orton like they did over the past Raw and Smackdown has provided the necessary juice to make this match an enjoyable story to unfold. There is still noticeable tension between the WWE champ and his tag team title partner to make this match even more unpredictable. It appears that Batista and the Undertaker are on the same page, at least from what I can see. What I am kind of annoyed about is the fact that WWE is saying how the Mania main events have never teamed up like this, yet, if we all can remember back to last year, when Cena & the Game met up with Orton, Rey Rey and Angle at SNME, it's happened before. It's a good idea, and I like this match from all angles possible, but WWE is fibbing by saying it's never been done before.
Although if they mean these four men facing each other, then definitely, WWE may have a point. It's another pick em, which makes this pay per view almost too good not to pass up. I'll go with Cena & Michaels to take the dupe, hopefully, giving some necessary tension between the Smackdown main event as the road to Mania goes in to the home stretch.
WINNERS: John Cena & Shawn Michaels
I just read a report Chris Benoit is due to be on the show, but his opponent has not been determined. I also read eariler reports of a 7 way cruiserweight title fight with the talents involved in the segment last night on Smackdown, but I checked the other sheets, and it seems to have disappeared. I asked the higherups here at the ' View with more connections than I about the Helms possible match, and if I get some word, I'll add it here, on either that match, or Benoit's.
QUICK UPDATE, 2/18/07 10:30AM
I won't provide full blown picks for the two matches added, but I'll make the picks. I think that MVP & MNM will win the six man tag match, because its obvious that its a vehicle to propel a feud in to overdrive between MVP and the US Champion leading up in to Wrestlemania.
As far as the cruiserweight open, I suspect Helms' reign is over. As much as I would like to see Helms retain, I doubt in this format he will be able to. The odds on favorite is Chavo Guerrero, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say Jamie Noble wins the match, and becomes a 2 time cruiserweight champion.
I gotta go, my youngest son is getting impatient, and I got business to do.
