Jeff Jones Interview: Talks about managing Mike Awesome, ECW, more
On Friday, March 2, 2007 at 5:55 PM EST Monday Night Mayhem sent in the following recap:
The manager of former ECW World Heavyweight Champion, the late Mike Awesome, "Judge" Jeff Jones, was one of the special guests on this past Wednesday night's edition (2/28/07) live edition of Monday Night Mayhem (w/The Big Mosh, Blade, & The Angry Hero), which can be heard in streaming audio every week (and live at 9PM ET/8PM CT every Monday night) exclusively on The Monday Night Mayhem Radio Network (www.MondayNightMayhem.com, www.ObsessedWithWrestling.com, www.ProWrestlingPress.com, www.AllWNYRadio.com, www.Showdown.net, & www.AudioWrestling.com -- your official home of "The Spring Break Incident" Video-On-Demand, featuring former WWE Diva, Stacy Keibler).
The Mayhem's special Mike Awesome Tribute Special is now available for FREE in Real Audio!
Here are some of the highlights from the interview, provided by The Mayhem's exclusive recapper, The eXtreme Icon!
*Jeff said that "the phone call is coming more often" nowadays, especially with people that he is/was good friends in his career. "Bad stuff happens to good people, and it sucks."
*Mike Awesome was truly a "awesome & great guy." He had a wife & kids who will never get to be with him ever again.
*He had the pleasure of being able to travel the world with Mike and see some of the greatest matches with him vs. Masato Tanaka, Tazz, & many others.
*Jeff strongly believes that Masato Tanaka & Mike Awesome brought the best out of each other, and that they had the best series of matches in both ECW & FMW.
*He got the phone call from someone who currently works for the new ECW, saying that Mike passed away, and that it was on WWE.com. He did not believe it, so he called Mike and left a message on his voicemail. More phone calls started coming in saying it was unconfirmed.
*Jeff said that the last time people saw Mike in the United States was at the ECW One Night Stand PPV at The Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City, where he defeated Masato Tanaka, so "he went out on a high note."
*He said he had to talk about Mike's passing at the Maryland Championship Wrestling event this past weekend, and he simply could not get the words out.
*Despite the heat that he got by some for jumping to World Championship Wrestling from ECW, Jeff mentioned that some of Mike's most memorable career highlights & moments did happen in WCW -- including teaming up with Lance Storm & having his feud with Jeff Jarrett, which involved the star of TV's "Different Strokes," Gary Coleman.
*Jeff also feels that people consider wrestling to be just the WWE, so Mike will never get the recognition that he really deserves from the business as a whole overall. The fans will be the ones who will remember Mike.
*People will never get to hear the great stories that mike used to tell about FMW, with the late Louie Spicolli "pissing in the bottle" and getting heat for it, & the ECW stories with the late Chris Candido.
*Jeff closed the interview/Mike Tribute Special by giving a very special message to the listening audience: "People should make the decisions that they think are best for them. When someone looks back on something, know that they did it because that was right for them. No matter what decisions you make in life, your fate is already planned out. Just do what makes you happy." That's what Mike Awesome was about...
