Update on upcoming split between TNA & NWA + what titles will be going
On Wednesday, March 7, 2007 at 5:54 AM EST To follow up on yesterday's report by Martin Hawrysko, some additional details have become available regarding the upcoming split between TNA Wrestling and the NWA.
According to the Pro Wrestling Torch, Bob Trobich (head of legal for NWA) and Steve Campbell (head of legal for Panda Energy as a representative for TNA) have negotiated to terminate the working agreement between the NWA and TNA Wrestling (Jeff Jarrett also acted as a third party representing TNA to cease the working relationship). As a result, NWA will take back full possession of the NWA World Heavyweight Title and NWA World Tag Team Titles. The plan as of now is to start a storyline at the Destination X PPV this Sunday to get this process rolling, although plans can always change.
TNA licensed the usage of the NWA name and NWA championships when the company first launched in June of 2002. During that time period when the company was owned by Jerry Jarrett, it went by the "NWA:TNA" name during the weekly Wednesday night PPV era. After moving to Orlando, FL in 2004, the company slowly fased out the usage of the "National Wrestling Alliance" name in its title and simply referred to themselves at Total Nonstop Action Wrestling. In the early days of the company, it was thought that by using the "NWA" name that it would help add credibility to the company. Since then, the importance seemed to dwindle after landing TV deals with Fox Sports Net and later Spike TV.
It will be very interesting to see how the company phases out the NWA World Heavyweight Title and NWA World Tag Team Titles. The rich heritage of the NWA World Title had been a strong marketing tool for TNA during its four-plus year history. However, TNA was also not abiding by NWA rules such as having to inform the NWA board ahead of time when a title change would be taking place, using the NWA name in all marketing and paying the NWA a fee if TNA ran an event in another NWA member's territory. For those reasons and a variety of others, an agreement to split the partnership has now been reached.
While it can't be independently confirmed at this time when the new change will begin (the Destination X PPV this Sunday has been thrown out as a possible starting point), what we do know is that TNA will now be forced to introduce a new TNA World Title and TNA World Tag Team Titles. We will continue to follow this situation as it develops.
