Pro's from the Palace (#168) - Picks & more stuff for TNA Destination X
On Saturday, March 10, 2007 at 6:32 PM EST It's pick time, ladies and gents, and Destination X is where I'm headin'. Well, not really, but hey, it sounded good.
VOODOO KIN MAFIA vs. Christy Hemme's Surprise Team
It would be a shock to me if its someone else outside of the former WWE Heart Throbs. They've been rumoured to take this spot for some time, and I have not heard any thing else regarding a potential tag team being signed for DX up to now. Is it a team that has been in TNA in the past, and is coming back for a reunion or a renaissance? Possibly. But who? Certainly not Triple X. Certainly not the Diamonds in the Rough. Well, wait a minute. Is there a possibility that Daniels' new gimmick is tied in to this match in some way, and perhaps Elix was resigned under the table? Man, that's pretty thin. But, it's a theory.
Anyway, kind of foolish to make a pick here because I don't know who the opponents are. All I can say is, TNA is sure figuring out a way how to cram in as much talent as they can for a three hour show. What happened to story telling, especially when you have the time, like you would in a pay per view? This card is overloaded, if you ask me, and not in a good way.
Winner of this match must use the Cross Face Chicken Wing
SENSHI vs. AUSTIN STARR
You know, one year ago, if you booked Low Ki vs. Austin Aries in the indies, you'd have hardcore and classic wrestling fans alike going absolutely ape trying to get tickets, myself included. Move a year later, and now we have new names, new roles, and a gimmick match that takes away the talent of both of these men. These men can tear the house down by themselves, they don't need a gimmick to hold them back, and this gimmick does just that. Is it funny? Yeah, anything with Backlund is entertaining, don't get me wrong, but these two men should be allowed to demonstrate how good they are between the ropes, and they can't, because they have to fit inside the dumb gimmick that TNA has set out in front of them. Ridiculously weird booking, if you ask me. Mack Backlund the ref, at least there, there's room to maneuver. This way, there's little to none, as far as I can see. Senshi wins, because I think eventually, Backlund is going to get in the ring and wrestle Starr, which is something I do NOT want to see. Backlund is a tremendous entertainer, but his time as a combatant, is long since over.
WINNER: Senshi
One outside note, before I continue, there is 9 matches on this card. 7 of them have a gimmick, or a gimmicky name to them. Only Angle/Steiner, and the World title match have no gimmicks. That's pathetic. I like a good gimmick once in a while, but give me one or two for a card, don't shove 7 of them down my throat for a 9 match card. It's just silly.
Double Bull Rope Match
JAMES STORM & JACKIE MOORE vs. PETEY WILLIAMS & GAIL KIM
Ok, I am going to sound like I am contradicting myself, but the fact is, I am going to be interested to see how Kim and Moore work with a bullrope tied to each other. Moore should be able to take Kim out with sheer brute force, she's ten times as strong as the Korean competitor, but with a weapon, Kim is in serious trouble, from where I sit. The only wild card in this contest is of course, Chris Harris. Is Harris finally going to be able to interject himself enough to get his hands on his former AMW partner? My guess says no. He runs in after the match is over, and the heels take the dupe to end this so called feud.
WINNERS: James Storm & Jackie Moore
Ghetto Brawl
LAX vs. TEAM 3D
I know we're trying to build heat for this feud by LAX going to New York and attacking 3D's "family." I know. And trust me, it worked. But is it TRULY necessary? Konann and Bubba can promo their collective asses off, and they really don't need the furor and ammunition that these "vignettes" provided. Yeah, seeing the legendary Johnny Rodz at ringside, which is a distinct possibility, is not a bad thing. Yeah, seeing Steve Schirripa (spelling?) from the Sopranos on Impact! was not a bad thing, even if he did sound corny doing it, but the bottom line is, a verbal war with Konann going against Bubba Ray would have sufficiently made this feud as personal as it is now. They did not have to bring in "family." I hate family, of any type, in wrestling. Whether it's legit, or not. I hate it. Two more things before picking a winner. One. Are we EVER going to get a tag team title match again between these two teams? And two. A Ghetto Brawl. Why not just call it a hardcore no rules match? It's basically the same damn thing. Hell, call it Monster's Ball. It has a better ring to it than a Ghetto Brawl.
WINNERS: Team 3D
Last Rites Match
STING vs. ABYSS
This by far is the dumbest of the 7 gimmicks for this card. I haven't a clue what the purpose of it is, and what they hope to attain. I also don't understand the logic of having Abyss come down last week during Hector Guerrero's presentation, and then, out of all the people in the ring, black hole slam So Cal Val. Yeah, we get it. Abyss is out of control without Mitchell at his side. We get it. But attack a dude, for the love of christ, keep the women out of it. The monster is 3 times the size of Val, and nobody that tiny needs to get a 350 pound monster crashing down on them. It's just stupid, if you ask me.
Anyway, I expect this feud to be done, because I am under the impression that by either next PPV or the following one, Mitchell will be back with a new monster, and Abyss would probably be the most likely candidate for the first feud, so Abyss has to turn face. Don't ask me how it's going to happen, but give this "victory" to Sting, and hopefully, this feud ends. Finally.
WINNER: Sting
KURT ANGLE vs. SCOTT STEINER
For once, TNA booked this right. Yes, Angle had a successful feud with Samoa Joe. Does that immediately make him ready to tackle for the NWA World title? I don't think so, even with his past history in WWE. I would believe he should still tackle some more heavy duty opposition before making his way to title contention. Nobody else is on Angle's level of notoriety to roll with Angle in a new feud, outside of one person. Scott Steiner.
And truth be told, this feud should be interesting to say the least. Take the CLICK out of the equation, and Steiner vs. Angle on sheer wrestling knowledge is a damn chess match that you can't predict for the world. Of course, we all know the click will figure out a way to get in the match, and make this contest even more difficult for the former Olympian, which will take the luster away from this type of match, and from the feud that these two men could potentially engage in. I will give the win to Angle at first, but expect some serious beat down on the part of the click on Angle before Samoa Joe gets involved and evens the odds.
WINNER: Kurt Angle
X Division Championship - 2 out of 3 Falls
CHRIS SABIN vs. JERRY LYNN
Once, Sabin acting like an old man in a bathrobe and a walker may have been funny. Sabin wearing a diaper like he did before the last PPV, just plain sick. But last week, pulling the same rabbit out of the hat again, its just dumb. But, let's move on. 2 out of 3 falls between the future of the X Division and the past of the X Division. It should be, if given the amount of time necessary, an amazing contest. It's obvious from reading other reports that Lynn is by no means done, and Sabin has to be taking this experience of working with an experienced guy like Lynn and using it as a sponge to get more knowledge and experience to make him a better competitor inside the ropes. It's almost a pick em match, from where I think. 2 straight, no chance. This one goes 3, and I think we're going to see the beginnings of the past reborn in the X Division...
WINNER & New TNA X Division Champion: Jerry Lynn
Elevation X Match
RHINO vs. A.J. STYLES
A scaffold match in any way, shape, or form, is going to be fun to watch. But, I read a report where both men are expressing serious concerns because of the width of the actual elevation X platforms, being only 20 inches wide. If Rhino thinks he's going to be able to gore AJ off the scaffold with that much room, he's nuts. While Ultimate X is dangerous, there's an element of containment with it, as the fall, ON TELEVISION, doesn't look that tremendously dangerous. Elevation X, it looks down right frightening. Also, there's got to be a portion of this structure that doesn't run parallel to the six sided ring. I doubt it would ever happen, but never say never, what happens if one of them fall, and actually miss the canvas? I know it's doubtful, but it's a possibility you need to think about, and this structure HAS to have a portion of it that is not buoyed by the ring canvas. If one of these men fall at the right time and the right spot, the fall could be catastrophic.
I have to give the edge to this one to Rhino, because AJ can't fly just as much as Rhino can't gore. If it's a strict pound for pound fight between these two warriors, Rhino will kill Styles. He's bigger, he's meaner, and he hits harder. I also think Rhino has more to lose by losing this match, while Styles doesn't. Styles place is still being cemented inside of Christian's click, while Rhino, if he falls from the structure, literally almost falls in to TNA obscurity, and that, I don't think, can be in the Detroit, Michigan's best interest, job security wise, nor is it in the best interest of the bookers of TNA.
WINNER: Rhino
NWA World Heavyweight Championship
CHRISTIAN CAGE vs. SAMOA JOE
Explain to me how the number one contender for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship gets defeated on free television one week before a PPV title match to a man who has barely wrestled a half dozen matches inside the TNA Impact Zone. Explain that to me, because I just don't get it, for any reason. What does TNA hope to achieve by having Tomko beat Joe? Tomko's gonna turn on Cage during this match? If he does, it totally devalues Joe's work in TNA, and the undefeated streak.
Anyway, on sheer paper, Joe kills Christian. While Cage can wrestle a good match, Cage can't handle significantly larger men, in my opinion. If I'm wrong, prove it to me. I don't have the full blown facts to back it up, it's just a feeling that I have, that on sheer paper, Joe is a harder hitter, and can submission wrestle Cage out of his boots. The element to watch out here for is Steiner and Styles and Tomko. Is Angle going to be out there in some factor to buoy Joe against Steiner and Tomko? Is Daniels going to make an appearance in a new facet to counterman Styles? Is the click going to be part of the match in any way? All questions that need answers, and I am not sure how it's going to play out, but it is pretty obvious of one thing, whether its the NWA World title, or the beginning of a TNA World championship, Christian Cage's second reign as a world champion ends on sunday.
WINNER and NEW NWA World Heavyweight Champion: Samoa Joe
