Funk's Corner - Mr. Apter is Always Welcome.

I gathered the participants for a discussion of the main event about what would take place that night in the sold out West Palm Beach Auditorium. (Florida Territory, Spring of 1981) We were midway through the show and it was critical that all participants knew what was expected of them.

The semi final, Sweet Brown Sugar and Hacksaw Butch Reed vs The Deaton Brothers managed by Jimmy Kent was in the ring and could be over any minute. There would be a short intermission then the main event would be called to the ring.

Time was critical and the information important.

There was a knock on the door and a security agent slipped his head in and said, "Mr. Funk, There is someone here that insists he gets to speak to you, he says he is a friend of yours.

I said what is his name?

The door pushed open and a graveled voice said, "Dory, Tell these men it's okay, Tell them to let me go."

It was a friend, a dear friend and one of our most loved wrestling fans in South Florida, Mr. Apter, father of professional wrestling's first journalist Bill Apter.

Never a week went by in West Palm Beach that Mr. Apter didn't stop by the dressing room to speak to the wrestlers.

This particular time he was latter than usual, but it was a ritual that was a weekly standard in West Palm Beach. Mr. Apter loved professional wrestling and the wrestlers who performed in the ring.

I smiled and told the security agents it was okay and they immediately released Mr. Apter. He came right to the middle of Big John Stud, Bruiser Brody, David Von Erich, Barry Windham, Mike Graham and myself and shook everyone's hand and let us know how happy he was to be here at his favorite sport, professional wrestling.

Mr. Apter thanked us and wished us a good and safe performance then left the dressing room to enjoy the rest of the show. Mr. Apter was always welcome in the dressing room of the West Palm Beach Auditorium.

Marti and I often wonder the inspiration for our students to become professional wrestlers, then we meet the parents and we know.

I don't know if Mr. Apter was the inspiration for Bill Apter to become a Journalist or if he was Bill's inspiration to become involved in professional wrestling, but I do know for sure how much Mr. Apter loved professional wrestling and how much pro wrestling loved Mr. Apter.

When it is important in life, time can stand still for a moment to enjoy the company of dear friends.

Here is the fully updated card as we know it now for this Sunday’s spectacle…

CAPW Tag Title Ladder Match: Faith in Nothing vs. Irish Airborne vs. Q&A
It’s the news that fans and insider alike are still buzzing about, as CAPW’s ultra-competitive tag title division gets taken to the next level. For the past several months, Irish Airborne and Q&A have fought amongst themselves in an attempt to crown a clear #1 contender to the gold. Meanwhile, champions Faith in Nothing have been on a mission to begin a legacy of dominance and defeat all top challengers soundly and decisively. None of the three teams has been able to accomplish any of their goals, thanks to the intense infighting and brawling that’s interrupted seemingly every tag team title and contender match in recent months. The only way to settle the issue is to take the rules, and throw them out the window and place all 3 teams in the ring at once. And as a result of Q&A’s attempted assault on the other two teams while using a ladder, it was only natural to raise the stakes further and make it a Ladder Match. Six men will go all-out, risk life and limb for the glory that comes with being called champion, but only one team will survive. There WILL be a clear and decisive winner April 15 in Turner’s Hall!

CAPW Heavyweight Title: Tracy Smothers vs. Buff Bagwell
When presented with recent complaints from CAPW wrestlers and fans over the recent actions of Tracy Smothers (including, but not limited to, his vicious attack of Gregory Iron), CAPW management made the decision to remove The Wild Eyed Southern Boy from scheduled tag team competition and ORDERED Smothers to defend his championship on April 15. His opponent is a man who’s held CAPW gold before, a man who’s battled Smothers with CAPW gold on the line in wars that saw no clear winner. Smothers will have to defend against the multi-time former WCW World Tag Team Champion Buff Bagwell! Bagwell has been a major player when it comes to CAPW title matches for several years now, and Buff Daddy feels its long overdue to have gold around his waist once again. Will the sneaky Smothers be able to survive another title defense?

CAPW Jr. Heavyweight Title: Zach Gowen vs. Barry Sagittarius
“The One Legged Wonder" re-emerges in CAPW for his first appearance and first title defense since unseating prior champion Johnny Gargano some weeks ago. While it remains to be seen if Gowen will have a response to the sickening attack Gargano perpetrated on Gowen using Gowen’s own cane after that match, the Tenacious One will have his hands full with one of CAPW’s most bizarre and unique characters in Barry Sagittarius. Sagittarius is a tough customer on his own, but should he decide to not come alone, namely with his frequent tag partner Michael Hellborn, the odds for Zach may once again appear to be insurmountable. Will CAPW’s answer to The Odd Couple see their first title reign or will Zach persevere once again?

Johnny Gargano vs. Super Hentai
The 19-year-old prodigy hopes to carry the momentum that landed him on a recent episode of WWE Smackdown, back into the Jr. Heavyweight Division, where the young Gargano has struggled in in recent weeks ever since losing his title. Meanwhile, Super Hentai hopes to start a wave of momentum of his own. Hentai has competed all over the world from Pittsburgh to Hawaii to Japan and everywhere in between and has beaten a number of internationally known stars and captured countless championships along the way. Who will prevail in this match which will have a major impact on the Jr. Heavyweight rankings.

Tag Team Battle Royal
With the current war between Tag Champions Faith in Nothing, Irish Airborne, and Q&A finally reaching it’s climax on April 15th, CAPW management already have plans in store to determine future top contenders and rankings within the CAPW Tag Team ranks. Officials have signed an Open Invitational Tag Team Battle Royal open to any and every tag team that wants to make its mark within a CAPW ring. While no teams have officially been named, a quick glance up and down the Cleveland All-Pro roster reveals several hungry deserving teams that would sacrifice anything to be called the best.

CAPW Television Champion Jason Bane in another title defense!
Cleveland’s unstoppable monster, reigning TV Champion Jason Bane is slated for another championship defense this Sunday, although it’s not entirely clear who his opponent will be. CAPW officials have had a very difficult time finding opponents willing to meet Bane, even with the prestigious Television Title at stake. With the ever-growing list of casualties Bane has left since capturing the title, it’s becoming more and more unlikely that anyone will stop this man’s path of rage. And with Bane still fuming over his recent run-ins with the likes of CAPW Heavyweight Champion Tracy Smothers, it makes it all the more painful for anyone who crosses his path.

Tyrone Evans makes his presence known in CAPW
The mammoth Tyrone Evans makes his CAPW Sports Time Ohio debut and intends to make it a memorable one. We’re not sure what this powerhouse has in mind for this upcoming Sunday, but April 15th could mark the beginning of a new era of pain in CAPW courtesy of this natural athlete.

Plus so much more!
