Pro's from the Palace (#181) - Draft Notes & One Night Stand thoughts
On Tuesday, May 29, 2007 at 4:54 AM EST Apparently, WWE is bringing the Draft lottery in to play again on June 11. While I welcome anything that resembles chaos within the realm of WWE, my question is obvious here.
Why?
All three brands are virtually represented every week on all three shows. Umaga, Lashley, Punk, Edge, Orton, Batista, Taker (before Mania), just to name a few have been jumping the turnstiles, and competing outside of their home bases. Like I said, I DO NOT MIND THIS IDEA, as it provides one hell of a topic to discuss in a piece. Let's first address the "rumoured" moves.
Chris Benoit to Raw or ECW
Personally, if this does happen, I would like to see Benoit go to ECW. I know this is a MAJOR LEAGUE backward step for Benoit, but if this is the only way he would return to the main event stature that he belongs in, then let's do it. Whoever gets the ECW title out of the grimy paws of Mr. McMahon needs a challenger, and Benoit has ties to ECW already. I would prefer to see him to ECW, as I think the show can be built, in a way, around him, as the youngsters continue to mature.
William Regal to Raw
I think Regal ought to shut up. Regal & Taylor are a tremendous tag team, and Regal wants out to focus as a singles competitor. I think that's ludicrous. Regal is a good singles wrestler, but not much more than midcard title contention at best. Don't get me wrong, he has the WHOLE PACKAGE, charisma, a ton of ability, and the mike skills to run with a major title, but the "it" factor that WWE creative looks for, I don't think they find it in William Regal, and if I were the Englishman, I wouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth. A tag title run is iminent for Regal & Taylor over either London & Kendrick again or the current champs, and that, sounds like a hell of an option from where I sit.
Mr. Kennedy to Raw
This move makes zero sense, as he would be the most likely candidate for a long term title run when he returns from injury on the Smackdown brand. On Raw, he’d be languishing in midcard stature hell behind guys like the current main event crop over there, Orton, Umaga, etc. Kennedy is a world champion in the making, and the most likely spot for that to happen is on Smackdown.
King Booker to Raw
Why? So he can be overlooked by the over abundance of major talent on the brand? Leave Booker just where he is. He’s fine. He’ll be a contender when he returns, and he can do what he is doing now at his PWA fed while healing for Smackdown. Teach.
Some moves I personally would like to see happen.
Jeff Hardy to Smackdown
I *KNOW* this will never happen, but you have a cross band talent holding a tag team championship, and it’s just not going to work. While it’s more likely to see Matt come to Raw, having Jeff on Smackdown would open up some MAJOR LEAGUE tag team wars with the WWE tag champs, Regal & Taylor, and London & Kendrick. Who knows, maybe we see a unification in the mix somewhere? It’s a dream, I know, but hey, it’s creative, isn’t it?
CM Punk to either Raw or Smackdown
I thought ECW would be built around this guy. Maybe he’s not television ready, I don’t know. But for some reason, Punk has been demoted to this ridiculous New Breed/Elijah Burke fiasco, and it’s just done its course to a long shot. Bring him to one of the bigger shows, and let him get the experience on television that all of WWE thinks and should realize he needs. Punk will put asses in the seats, and more time on television for CM Punk, the better he will become, and the better the product, WWE will produce.
Umaga to ECW
Let’s just do this officially, please? It’s so damn obvious he belongs there. Just sign it, and let’s go. Lashley vs. Umaga, Snitsky vs. Umaga, Sandman vs. Umaga, Dreamer vs. Umaga. The list is endless. It may not be marquis, but it would not be too bad.
Finlay to ECW
Ok. Maybe it doesn’t make a lot of sense. But the man loves to fight, and can definitely take it to the extreme. Let the mad Irishman beat up a few rednecks in the land of ECW. It couldn’t hurt!
Elijah Burke to either Raw or Smackdown
Burke in ECW doesn’t mesh as far as I can see. It needs to be someone of an intense hard edged nature, and Burke’s persona doesn’t show me that hard edge. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t deny Burke’s ability, but he’s more a technician and an aerialist than he is a ground and pound destructor of bodies. And I think in ECW, if you don’t let the bodies hit the floor, you shouldn’t be on the roster.
And lastly, some developmental talents from Ohio Valley Wrestling that I would consider a high potential to return to the roster sooner rather than later, and with this draft idea, sooner is definitely a possibility….
Aaron “the Idol" Stevens
Already has experience on the main roster. I think he was sidelined due to McCool’s injuries. With her back, and Stevens basically without a role in OVW, a role somewhere on the main roster may be a possibility, especially to patchwork some needed holes due to injuries.
Kasey James
I would’ve said this guy and the Idol together, but James has seemingly gotten a role back in OV W with the newly acquired Cassidy Reilly, going by the name of Cassidy James as the “James Boys". Considering their next big match is against a team with one member being Dr. Death Steve Williams, the chances are slim KC is coming up any time soon, but he needs to be mentioned here due to his previous partnership with the Idol.
Paul Burchall
From what I’ve read through the website, Burchall has dominated OVW with now I believe 4 times wearing the OVW gold. Not much else can be done with that except be dealt out of the company, or brought back to the majors. His “Ripper" gimmick is something I would like to see on the main stage. Hopefully, he’ll get the chance again.
Cody Runnels
Son of the American Dream, his name has been appearing on house shows already. A former tag champ and world champ in OVW, he just has the bloodlines to get the job done on the main stage. How about another father and son scenario with Cody & The Dream? We saw Dustin do it, now it’s Cody’s turn.
Mike Kruel
An indy veteran has been getting some nice heel heat with his vendetta against Canada. Benoit is going to Kentucky to face Kruel in a match sometime soon. It’s possible, especially if Benoit goes to ECW, where they may be some room to put Kruel on the roster. I saw Kruel compete at UXW and ROH back in the day, and he was good back then. I’m sure he’s improved enough to get a shot.
Mike Mondo, Nick Nemeth & Johnny Jeter
I really feel bad for these guys. They got royally screwed by the company when the Spirit Squad went their separate ways. Nick Mitchell got a one way ticket out of the company, these three guys got sent back down to OVW, and Ken Doane Dykstra has managed to stay on Raw and be a midcard jobber. While Doane may have a ton of ability, his ego is a major hurdle to overcome, and perhaps keeping one of these three guys with him would’ve assisted. Not to mention the fact that it would’ve been cool to see some splinter faction of the Spirit Squad take shape with a different look and attitude to it. These guys all have big roster experience. Perhaps it’s time for them to come back to the show.
Jacob Duncan
Bluntly, there’s only one thing that needs to be done here. A former OVW Champion, Duncan needs to come up for one match with the Boogeyman. After that, I don’t care. Duncan is the Boogeyman without the red paint and the worms. All else, is on the line.
Beth Phoenix
She barely had a cup of coffee on Raw before taking her jaw for a walk on the wild side. Since then, she’s been back languishing in OVW, running for her life from the madman clutches of Jacob Duncan. Phoenix has all the athleticism known to man, does she have the charisma to come back to the show? It’s a question that I don’t have the answer to, but she gets the honorable mention because of her past experience on Raw.
There were a couple in Deep South before it folded that had my eye. Specifically Sonny Siaki from TNA back in the day, and Natalie Neidhart. While I highly doubt either one of these talents, or anyone else from the former Deep South will get the shot anytime soon before the Tampa territory gets rolling, it certainly would be nice to see some of these names get a shot at the big time, especially since all the shows could use some new faces, new matches, and new creativity.
Closing it up…
Do me a favor, and don’t come at me with the how do I know this and how do I know that crap, because like I said before, I don’t know. What this does however is provide some major chaos for the shows, which all of them need, and hopefully, some new creative ideas will blossom from the draft and lead further in to the summer months when Booker, Mysterio ,and the Game return to action. These moves I discussed are all fictional, some I read about, and most I thought up. The developmental names was a poor attempt by yours truly just to make sure I crossed all the t’s and dotted all the i’s with this idea. Chances are good nothing I mentioned here will work.
But it’s fun to at least project and try to prognosticate what will.
I have to comment before taking off on One Night Stand. While I would've liked to see ECW featured solely on this PPV, I think I like how they're setting this up. Any chance to put the Hardy Boys in a ladder match is gold, and with Haas & Benjamin, we could see an Armageddon 2006 classic like we did with those four teams. As much as I don't like Edge, Edge vs. Batista in a cage is the right move to keep that title's prestige alive and keep the feud going until someone else is ready to step up to the plate. While I am rooting like hell for Cena to win, this match is peculiar to say the least, because frankly, it's an open contract to have Khali destroy WWE's main meal ticket, whether you fans like it or not. Cena is one of the, if not the top draw in the company right now, and this feud is absolutely putting him in harm's way. If Cena comes out of this without being seriously injured, I will be stunned. Lashley vs. McMahon is going to be like the DX/McMahon tag match at Summerslam back in the day, where the McMahons throw out about 10 guys, and then Vince comes down to the ring and poses in front of an absolutely near dead talent. I wish I would see two guys just go out there and try to kick the living crap out of each other, but you all know we won't. This match bothers me, and it will bother me more if Vince makes it out of Jacksonville with the belt. Lastly, while I love seeing the divas compete, and Candice has gotten the push for a title match, no question about it, but a non title pudding match? Extreme is needed, yes, but isn't this a touch over the top, even for this scenario? Maybe I'm wrong, maybe people will like it. I probably will myself, and I'm not even getting the PPV. BTW, how hot was Candice last week in that ring gear, yeow!
Anyway, it would be nice to see a match or two added to this card, 5 matches scares me, but the proximity to Judgment Day makes this one really tough to put together. Hopefully, it'll work out best for all parties involved.
Take care, everybody. See you this weekend with a pick column for One Night Stand.
