Badseed's Bottomline #417: Vince McMahon and the draft
On Sunday, June 17, 2007 at 1:08 PM EST Hey yo! I write this before the supplemental draft. I expect to have a follow-up sometime this week after the WWE destroys the brands with their draft selections. But let's get into last week's wrestling good, bad and the ugly.
Wow. Vince McMahon is dead. I mean…Mr. McMahon, the television character is dead. That’s kind of awesome. In fact, after watching the Sopranos the night before and being thoroughly disappointed, it was highly refreshing to see a show end in a way that shocks the audience.
I mean, we all had a feeling that something was going to happen when he got into the car, but did you really think explosion. It may have crossed your mind, but then you would have said, “Nah…they wouldn’t do that." You wondered who would be in the limo with him. Was Stone Cold inside? Did Lashley go to get revenge for having his ECW title stripped. I did hear Sid Vicious was back…hmmmm…could he be inside…and then BOOM…the limo explodes and it’s like wow…what a way to end a show. Did Vince McMahon just die?
And then they go and ruin the angle. Here’s what I would have done. Instead of a live ECW broadcast, I would have put a black screen with a message to fans, saying, “Due to the shocking and untimely death of Vincent Kennedy McMahon, original ECW programming will not be seen tonight." And then I would have aired a best of ECW show or something in its place.
The Friday after, I would have actually aired the Vince McMahon DVD story as a way of honoring his memory. It would make no sense to air Smackdown. How can wrestlers just wrestle after their boss just died? Yes, he continued the show when Owen Hart died, but this is different. The company could be in turmoil. Their jobs could be on the line. They would not be in the right frame of mind to wrestle…at least from a realistic standpoint.
Business wise, it makes sense…because now you leave the fans hanging for a week…sort of like they used to do when Raw was the only show on television for wrestling. And in doing so, fans would have anxiously awaited the next Raw broadcast to see what happened and to learn about the angle and where it will go. Raw ratings would have risen sharply and ECW and Smackdown ratings would not be hurt, because that Raw could be used to notify fans of what to look forward to on those nights. It would also prove how affective one night of Raw could be rather than three nights of wrestling each week.
We all know Vince McMahon will come back. He has too much of an ego to stay off of television for too long. He was “presumed dead," but we all know that in TV Land, many soap opera stars have been presumed dead, only to find a way out of the car in time (despite it looking like the explosion occurred as soon as the door closed). Disoriented and fearful for his life, McMahon left the scene and stayed away from wrestling until something woke up and he decided to come back a changed man. Blah Blah Blah. It will happen…mark my words.
Anyways, on to the draft. I sort of hated it and loved it at the same time. I will go over it quickly.
Great Khali: I saw this pick and I got really pissed. He was on Smackdown already last year. Why rehash that? And hasn’t this guy been on enough brands? Doesn’t that mean he isn’t working out? Shouldn’t that mean it is time for him to go? Maybe, like Andre the Giant moved from one territory to the next, so will the Great Khali. I just don’t know what he can do on Smackdown, other than feud with Batista and Mark Henry. I don’t think Edge could carry Khali to a great match. I really don’t.
Boogeyman: Why? Only big names should be drafted during this show and Boogeyman is not a big name. He is a horrible wrestler who is only mildly entertaining at times. He works for ECW only because the show is on the Sci Fi network, but other than that, there is no place for him unless they revamp his gimmick and make him become a much more creepy version of Raven. I mean, he’s into the psychological games…now heel it up a bit and make him play mind games with wrestlers like Raven did. That’s the only thing I can think of for him. Sorry. But he only makes ECW look like a big joke.
Chris Benoit: And then you add Benoit into the mix and that changes things up tremendously. I thought for sure ECW would lose CM Punk when Benoit was drafted, but so far, both men remain on the brand and I am excited about the possibilities. They have been saying that Benoit was going to Raw, but I had been pushing for Benoit to head to ECW. Maybe they were reading or maybe it was a coincidence, but that move gave ECW so much more respect than it ever had and maybe it is something that can convince RVD to stay. Who knows? I do love the possibilities of seeing Benoit vs. CM Punk. That’s awesome.
Bobby Lashley: He was already on Raw. This was just a formality. You could tell they were testing him out for Raw audiences when he was feuding with Umaga on the flagship show. He fits on that show. It makes sense. He’s a big guy and the WWE likes to push big guys, but what a horrible promo with Coach. He grabs him and I thought he was going to show some anger, but all he does it say, “I will have to prove myself." What? Not good, but Lashley against Cena could be awesome and Lashley against HHH will be fun. There are a lot of possibilities here. Why do I sense a strange teaming one day between Lashley and Umaga?
Chris Masters: One of the better draft selections. Now he has a place to start over and get a legitimate push. He’s a big guy, but doesn’t have the marketability for Raw, so Smackdown is a safer place for him to shine. I definitely would like to see him against Batista, the Undertaker and Kane. And if they can make him over a bit, a face turn could do him wonders.
King Booker: His gimmick is silly in a good way, but the thing that separates King Booker from everyone else is that he is able to make everything from GI Bro to King Booker to a tag-team with Goldust work. Booker T knows how to work in that ring and he deserves one more solid run on Raw. I would love to see how they push him. He has a lot of options on Raw.
Mr. Kennedy: This is the biggest pick on the show, in my opinion. Kennedy on Raw will set the stage for a lot of interesting feuds in the coming months. It will be interesting to see if they push him as a face or not. I am surprised that he will never get revenge against Edge, but Mr. Kennedy vs. John Cena is exciting and Mr. Kennedy vs. HHH could be very interesting. I think Mr. Kennedy vs. HBK is the match I am really looking forward to seeing. And since he was so influenced by Stone Cold Steve Austin, interaction between the two of them should be a lot of fun.
Torrie Wilson: Get rid of her. She’s garbage. She can’t do anything in the ring and other than replace Ashley while she is away on Survivor or whatever doesn’t mean much for her chances once the WWE starts firing people again. She looks great, but once you see her naked twice, she becomes rather boring. At least Candice Michelle reinvented her look and showed some effort in the ring.
Ric Flair: This is an awesome pick. I think it helps Smackdown out a lot. Since HBK won’t go there, Ric Flair is a perfect choice. With so much younger talent on the roster and with Batista still needing guidance because he can’t hang on his own, Flair is a perfect selection. He can mentor the younger wrestlers and since he has proven himself against Edge in the past, he can also get that one last run he has been looking for. I can’t wait to see a Ric Flair promo on Smackdown. Change is good. Real good.
Snitsky: Wouldn’t it have made sense to move him to Smackdown since he already proved he can’t cut it on Raw? And can someone do something about all that back acne on him? I mean, it definitely implies something the WWE doesn’t want fans believing. Snitsky will get lost in the shuffle. A quick feud with Lashley and Cena will result to an eventual release.
The supplemental draft is coming up and I really want to see Jeff Hardy moved to Smackdown, because a feud between the Hardy Boys and Paul London and Brian Kendrick would revitalize tag team wrestling again. Why else was Matt Hardy put into a handicap match with Deuce and Domino? The writing is on the wall. Plus Jeff Hardy would benefit more in terms of the singles action that could present itself on Smackdown.
I think it makes a ton of sense to move Rey Mysterio to ECW. I know Smackdown lost a lot of players, but what can Mysterio do on Smackdown now that he won the world title. I mean, one feud with Edge would be great, but after that, who else will he have to fight? Mark Henry? Kane? Undertaker? If he was to go back to cruiserweights, that would be a different story, but why take a step back. In ECW, he can rule the roost again and with Chris Benoit, CM Punk, Elijah Burke and others, Mysterio would be able to deliver and not have to work as hard since ECW is only an hour show.
Super Crazy should go to ECW. He would fit in better there and he could form an International team with Little Guido. Plus matches with Rey Mysterio would be off the charts. I still think the WWE should work hard to get Tajiri back. And Simon Dean failed, but why not resurrect Nova and let him go all out in the ring. ECW really could go back and still move forward.
Val Venis should go to Smackdown and they should totally repackage him. When he started, he was great. When he joined Trish, he was awesome. And when he was speaking for the RTC, he was amazing. It’s time to use him again, the right way. Let him speak and let him wrestle. Smackdown needs talent and they need major players. He could be again.
I don’t like the Major Brothers in ECW. Move them to Raw.
I still think Batista is a better fit on Raw, but now Raw is too clogged up, so he has to stay on Smackdown. I think Eugene should move to ECW. HAHA. I am serious. I want Sandman to beat the holy hell out of him every single week until Eugene changes his gimmick that will be more hardcore. I want that to be the storyline.
Mark Henry should move to Raw. He should wrestle Cena to continue Cena’s streak with the title against men like Umaga and Khali.
Michelle McCool should go to Raw. I think she can start wrestling and I think Raw needs more wrestlers of the female variety.
And I think that’s it. I don’t know of any other changes that would make a bit of sense. And I have gone on long enough. Until next time, this is Badseed and I was nowhere near Vince McMahon’s limo. Peace
