READY TO RUMBLE
Dreaming of stardom in the ring
Pro wrestler wannabes go to school to learn the ropes

Bodies were flying and weights were clanking throughout his red-, white- and blue-painted gym, but Booker T. Huffman — better known as Booker T and, now, King Booker — lowered his voice when he talked about fellow wrestler Chris Benoit.
"He was a really good friend of mine," said Huffman, referring to the World Wrestling Entertainment pro wrestler who last month allegedly committed murder-suicide. "I just really think that he was under a lot of pressure and a lot of stress. Whatever it was, it was just too much for him to bear."
Despite the cloud cast on the professional wrestling community, young men and women across the city continue to crowd into dark, hot rings with dreams of being the next WWE superstars. Houston offers lots of opportunity.
Huffman, a Houston native who has been wrestling since 1990 and is a staple on WWE's Raw, spends at least three nights a week providing hands-on training to the next generation of pro wrestlers at his school, Booker T's Pro Wrestling Academy. When Huffman opened the school, which features six rings and a weight area, in 2005, he said he fulfilled a lifelong dream.
In addition to teaching the fundamentals to more than 40 students who have shelled out the $3,500 tuition for the chance to work with him, he said he hopes to help them avoid the sort of pressures Benoit, whose autographed picture hangs in the gym office, faced.
When Neico, a 28-year-old professional wrestler, first met Huffman, "I felt like a kid," he said. "It was like a kid who wants to be a basketball player meeting Michael Jordan."
After receiving positive feedback from the WWE last year, Neico joined Huffman's school, which he calls "the Harvard of wrestling schools."
"I'm fighting to make the WWE want to call me," Neico said. Huffman has helped him with his moves, his persona and his overall wrestling philosophy. "In this business, if you sit back and wait, you won't get called. You have to get out there and make them notice you."
Wearing a T-shirt with one of his catch-phrases — "Tell me you didn't just say that" — Huffman said he tries to use his WWE connections when he can.
"If we have some talent that's worthy enough to maybe take that next step to WWE, and I feel like they're ready to take that step, I'm going to be the first one to step up for them and say, 'Hey, let's take a look at this guy,' " he said. "If they like him, they'll take him. If not, they won't. There's no guarantees."
Just a few blocks away, in a modest gym with one ring, a few random pieces of weight-lifting equipment and the thick smell of sweat, members of Tugboat Taylor's School of Professional Wrestling gathered for class.
"It's got to be in your blood," said Tugboat Taylor, who began wrestling when he was in ninth grade. "You've got to live it 24-7."
After warming up, class members grabbed partners and practiced powerful kicks, impressive throws and comedic leap frogs.
Wrestler DJ King said that while practices are important — he's lost 40 pounds since joining Taylor's school two years ago — nothing compares to the feeling he gets from transforming into his alter ego at the school's monthly shows.
"When you have a great match, you never want to come out of there," King said. "The crowd loves it. It's great for kids."
Huffman, who grew up watching wrestling locally, said he hopes to use his school, frequent live events and TV spots to expand the sport in Houston and promote his charitable foundation, Booker T. Fights For Kids, which he started with his wife, Sharmell.
And he hopes to continue helping a new wave of wrestlers like Neico, who plans to one day face his mentor in the ring.
"I would love to drag him in the ring one day," Neico said. "He'll teach me a lesson, or I'll show him a young lion is taking over. I can't wait on the day."
