Pro's from the Palace (#195) - Palace Report: ROH, Homicide & CZW, WWE
» Reported by Mike Siciliano of WrestleView.com
» On Sunday, July 29, 2007 at 2:54 PM EST

There’s a bunch of topics to think about here, so let me get started. First, I have a good deal of aggravation and anger toward the ROH brass. Not for the product, not by a long shot, but because of their inability to accept someone actually questioning what they went through this past weekend. Allow me to explain.

Back in June, I attended a WSU show at the Deer Park Community Center. A small facility, almost like a converted school, but it held a small crowd for a small company very comfortably. During that time, I had been hearing that ROH, fresh off losing their Long Island venue, Sports Plus, was considering booking the DPCC for the upcoming event this past Friday. I kept saying to anyone who would listen that there is no way on the face of the planet that ROH could comfortably hold a show in that building with a Sports Plus sized crowd.

Due to that circumstance primarily, I missed only my 2nd ROH show since they started coming to Long Island. (The 1st show I missed was Unscripted II, when there was a blizzard on Long Island, and things were just too dangerous) However, to express what I was feeling, I went to a portion of the ROH board based on ‘fan activity’, and said something to the effect of, “I’m not sure if this is the best option for a show because it’s too small, but if I’m wrong, good luck, and I hope I am wrong.”

I thought that would be worthwhile of a debate to spark discussion from northeast ROH fans who may be familiar with the building, as it is the home of smaller fed Victory Pro Wrestling. However, before the debate could even be started, the post was deleted.

I am not going to disparage ROH for censoring their board to keep their product in the best light, but the facts are clear. I was trying to debate a topic that ended up being a significant issue for the show this past Friday, and I wasn’t given the opportunity to because ROH, I guess, did not want to disparage their new venue before it even got off the ground.

Not exactly the best way to promote your product when your fans cannot even debate the good and bad points of ROH, as said so in the rules of the board.

Moving on….

According to reports I have read, Teddy Hart has heat in Ohio Valley Wrestling for not fulfilling his responsibilities with the company doing the ‘grunt’ work needed to be done by the talents after the shows. Forgive me for saying so, but Teddy Hart is a tremendous talent, as I witnessed first hand back in 2005 when Hart competed for Ted DiBiase’s PWA. But, if he’s going to act like he’s bigger than everybody else, well, quite frankly, his time will be limited, and the Hart family legacy will continue to be steeped in more arrogance and conceitfulness than wrestling ability and elegance.

If I was Hart, I’d shut up, follow suit, and let the chips fall, because guarantee you this, Vince McMahon would be a fool not to bring up Hart and Nattie Neidhart soon and let them run rampant over any of the brands. They’re both that talented. But Hart needs to remember where he’s from, and keep the high school antics out of the locker room before it ends up affecting more than just his own career.

Onward and onward…

This past week on Smackdown, Mark Henry used a new individual for his residence toothpick. Joey Blaylock. He looked familiar to me, as I read earlier with the spoilers that it happened to be former PWG World Champion and current NWA World Tag Team Champion Joey Ryan.

I’m curious. Is being the NWA World Tag Team Champion not enough recognition that its needed to take a paycheck and be the lawn dart for a walking semi truck? I don’t know. Maybe it isn’t, but from where I sit, the NWA would or should be terribly upset as to how bad Ryan looked during the match. I mean, he did put Henry over in a big way, but is it really necessary for a champion of probably the 2nd biggest federation in the country to be a jobber on television?

I’d be curious to hear someone’s opinion on that who has experience in the business. I certainly don’t, so all I can do is say what I see from the outside.

The Palace rolls on….

My last two points are WWE related, so let me do my last indy topic.

About a year or so ago, at Death Before Dishonor III,

STOP: Now, I am not one to say I know all, and I screwed my facts up here. Thanks to my friend Brandon from Massachusetts, I was corrected, because I was talking about Death before Dishonor IV, not three. OOPS! My bad!

the Cage of Death match ended a feud between Ring of Honor and Combat Zone Wrestling. And it ended with one of the ROH legends coming in to the ring and basically turning the entire cage in to one gigantic slaughterhouse. Now, that same legend is signed to appear in CZW and fight for the CZW World Heavyweight Championship. I am speaking of the Notorious 187, Homicide.

I certainly am not going to say that someone cannot accept bookings whenever they can, but it’s ironic how the savior of the biggest feud of 2006 throughout indy wrestling is now going to be signed to compete for the fed that lost the feud and compete for its world title. Not to mention the fact that this same individual was forced out of ROH because of ROH’s PPV deal due to his affiliation with TNA, but he can still compete for the smaller feds like CZW and JAPW.

I know, I’m not dumb enough not to realize that the smaller feds have no real bearing or heat on TNA’s performance, so the chances are slim that there would be any significant damage done to TNA’s product by its talent competing in smaller feds like CZW and JAPW. It’s just incredibly annoying to me, as a fan of ROH, and a serious fan of the men that TNA took out of ROH, Low Ki, Homicide, Joe, Styles, Daniels, Shelley, that I can see guys like that compete in feds around the northeast but not close enough for me to attend, but I can’t see them when they’re in my own backyard competing for the fed that’s probably the closest thing to the majors that’s out there.

Without the inside knowledge, I guess I am going to be here saying to anyone who would listen that I just don’t understand why exposure for TNA’s talent in ROH wouldn’t be beneficial for both companies. I know there’s a million reasons that can be relayed, but until I hear the actual one, I’m still going to feel the same way.

Two WWE topics to finish this out, first the ridiculous one, the eventual removal of the cruiserweight championship.

Hornswoggle, Finlay’s little friend, literally, won the title in the cruiserweight open at the Great American Bash. With the return of Rey Mysterio, this whole set up is absolutely retarded. There’s no other way that it can be said, but this whole idea is ludicrous. I feel badly for the one person who’s suffered the most from this, and that’s James “Jamie Noble” Gibson. Gibson has been fortunate enough to lose to Hornswoggle twice, this past Friday on Smackdown most recently in a title defense.

Why in the name of the all that’s worthwhile is the cruiserweight division being put through this form of embarrassment when the king of the cruiserweights is en route to return to duty. I would’ve considered the option of Chavo keeping the belt and Rey challenging for the title. Instead, Noble gets the embarrassment of losing twice to a midget.

No offense at all to midget wrestlers by any stretch of the imagination, but this is the absolute last thing this championship needs. This whole division is already wrecked with loss from the draft, injuries, and lack of talent. Although the report of the title being phased out for the foreseeable future, this is still the wrong thing from the grand scheme of things and it totally devalues the prestige of the championship.

One last topic to discuss.

WWE is forced to give its drug policy notes to Congress. I have only one statement on this topic. While I fully realize and hope that the wrestling situation with its talent dying well before its time is addressed, I believe Congress has a lot of more pressing issues to sink its collective teeth into, and it should be focusing on how to get our troops home from war, not worrying about entertainment and a sport that is by no way in any sense the top priority from a politician’s point of view. And if it becomes top priority, then I demand to find that politician that says it is, and give them a cat scan to see if they themselves have suffered brain damage or something to that effect.

In closing, I read a piece where the Dynamite Kid commented on the Chris Benoit tragedy, and came off sounding like a bitter man who hates more than he thinks. Personally, with his reaction to this tragedy being as such, I am starting to understand why the WWE hasn’t taken the time to properly salute the tag team career of the Kid and Davey Boy Smith.

Ok. I’m done.

UPDATE: 7/30 @ 01:00AM
I just read a report that TNA signed Adam "Pacman" Jones of the Tennesse Titans to perform as a pro wrestler. If that is truly the case, and that is the "former" world champion that TNA is teasing about his debut on Impact this week, TNA is doomed. Absolutely doomed. And I think I'll probably stop following it myself, because this is the sign of one thing. A company in absolute desperation. This has to be, and I hope, for all parties involved, I pray its a mistake.

Now I am more than done. I'm tired, I'm ticked off, and I'm more ticked off. 'Night.
