Pro's from the Palace (#198) - Picks and thoughts for WWE Summerslam
On Sunday, August 26, 2007 at 12:53 PM EST Time is short, and so I'm not. Time for picks for Summerslam.
REY MYSTERIO vs. CHAVO GUERRERO
A main event in any way you slice it. Rey and Chavo have gone all over the world, and tore up everywhere they have participated against and with each other. I suspect nothing less. I don't think WWE would put Rey back on a pay per view if he's not shown in test matches during house shows that he's back to 100% capacity. He's going to need to be as Chavo has shown a nasty streak that I personally have enjoyed. It's been bordering on obnoxious, but still nasty as hell. However, when you cut through the gristle, and get right down to the bone, the Meadowlands is going to be popping like mad for Rey Mysterio, so this feud, rekindled in all its glory, is just getting warmed up. Rey wins in a squeaker to reignite Chavo even further, and begin a nice buildup to a gimmick match at Unforgiven.
WINNER: Rey Mysterio
KANE vs. FINLAY
I love this match. I love it. Two guys who will walk up to you, say absolutely nothing, and then hit you so hard in the face, your teeth roll in to the back of your head. It's bowling shoe ugly, to use the cliche', but I love it. I don't care who wins. I win because this match is going to be fun to watch. I think Finlay will win because of the 'injury' to Kane's ribs. But, hopefully, this is not done by a long shot. Slobber knocker, anyone?
I just read a report that this match is slated, or was slated originally to be a comedy match involving Hornswoggle. Personally, that takes away from Finlay and Kane as talents, and I can't believe that they would do that to two long term loyal superstars like the Big Red Monster and the Irishman. If they do, I will be disappointed as hell.
WINNER: Finlay
KING BOOKER vs. TRIPLE H
I heard from a good friend of my wife and I that the pop in the Garden when Trips didn't come out was damn near dangerous. I would highly suspect the pop when he comes out for real tonight in the Meadowlands could be down right gunneral. Any way you slice it, Booker's doomed for this one. Not for the feud overall, that's just getting heated up, but this one, this pop, ought to be damn insane. It's the entire reason, plain and simple, why I will be picking up this DVD come release date. No other reason, period.
WINNER: Triple H
WWE Intercontinental Championship
UMAGA vs. MR. KENNEDY vs. CARLITO
I have grown very fond of Umaga's character, based solely on the fact of what I had said during the Kane/Finlay pick. Straight up ass kicking. With that being said, no single competitor is on Umaga's level to take the title, period. In a match like this, a title change is likely. Carlito, I think, is being fed to the wolves, as I think WWE is still upset with him for lack of reached potential. Kennedy, with the major angle on the horizon, has always been a champion in waiting, and with his world title reign cut before it started due to injury, this is the perfect way to get him in to the main event scene to stay, and have him primed for the Vinnie Mac child story. Also, with Kennedy beating Carlito, which is what I think will happen, Umaga retains his own status of being the invincible monster.
WINNER: Mr. Kennedy
Tri Brand Divas Battle Royal to determine the #1 contender for the WWE Women's Championship
Definitely won't see Sara Del Rey or Daizee Haze or Lacey in this one. Wow. I'll go with the prediction I said in my previous column, and let's see Candice get through another accomplished grappler...
WINNER: Beth Phoenix
ECW Championship
JOHN MORRISON vs. CM PUNK
Is there ever going to be a time anymore that the land of extreme has a title match that actually is contested under 'extreme rules'? Ok, I digress. 3rd time is the charm. Punk wins. Morrison has done what he needed to do, get Punk to the level where he can take the brand, and begin work with Big Daddy V, Matt Striker, and the Miz, and further develop the ECW roster. Morrison steps back from the limelight, and goes to war with virtually anybody, face or heel, in a possible quick return to title contention. Bottom line here, CM Punk is the most popular man in ECW right now, and if he's given the title to run with, WWE will get viewers to Sci Fi on tuesday nights. Lock, stock, and barrel.
WINNER: CM Punk
World Heavyweight Championship
BATISTA vs. THE GREAT KHALI
WV has a report detailing plans for tonight, and on it its written, "Any match involving Khali on live television is a tremendous risk." I cannot agree more. This match will be so bowling shoe ugly, it's not going to be worth a description. Personally, if I were watching the show tonight, this would be my bathroom break. Neither man deserves the title, and whoever wins, Smackdown still suffers. I think they'll take the belt off Khali, which further devalues both Khali and the championship, because bluntly, Khali is a walking disaster waiting to happen, and Batista at least has enough skill to get the job done and not hurt anyone seriously. This match disgusts me from the word go. Plain and simple.
WINNER: Batista
Wow, I am going to do bad this card, because I'm picking a lot of title changes. Here we go with the Main Event.
WWE Championship
JOHN CENA vs. RANDY ORTON
All my readers know me, and know my feelings on Cena. Most of you that have written me about Orton know I'm not a huge Orton supporter. I respect his talent, immensely. I respect the fact this feud has been done very well. My heart wants to pick Cena, because I feel that Orton does not deserve to roll with the Raw brand on his back. Why? Just call it a hunch on my part. I have nothing to back it up, it's just a hunch. I'll be rooting for Cena to retain, because frankly, that's me. However, it does appear from all signs that Orton takes the belt. He then has a couple of small feuds in the interim leading up to either Unforgiven or Cyber Sunday, where the Game takes him on, and out for the title. We all know Trips is destined for reign #11. I guess he feels taking it from Orton is better ratings, and having Cena be the hunter, instead of the hunted. I hope WWE knows what its doing.
This hurts.... a lot more this time than it did when I picked Lashley to beat Cena....
WINNER: Randy Orton
Sorry for the delay in getting this out, and the shortness of it. Laundry stinks, man. And I gotta get back to it.
