Welcome to the Armpit wrestling quiz for the week of November 12, 2007. As we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Survivor Series, we continue with the 2nd part of our quiz, “Survivor Series – Part 2."
Last week’s answers:
-Team Hogan consisted of Hogan, Bam Bam Bigelow, Ken Patera, Don Muraco, and Paul Orndorff.
-At SS ’88, Mr. Fuji turned on Demolition and joined up with the Powers of Pain. Do you realize that half of the WWE roster knows so little about wrestling history that they don’t even know who the Powers of Pain are? Very, very sad.
-At SS ’89, Bobby Heenan replaced the recently fired Tully Blanchard. Surprisingly, his career never recovered.
-SS ’90 saw the WWF debut of the Undertaker.
-We goofed on this question, as we incorrectly stated Ric Flair did not wrestle at Survivor Series ’91. He did, in fact, wrestle in the opening match. He interfered in the WWF title match that night by slipping a chair into the ring, which the Undertaker used to tombstone Hogan on. Thanks to those of you who wrote in and corrected us.
-SS ’92 featured the return of Curt Hennig. Hennig was asked to return after things didn’t work out between WWF and the Ultimate Warrior.
-SS ’93 featured a match from Smoky Mountain Wrestling.
Here are this week's questions. Remember, the new rules are that you no longer need to submit your questions, and no winners will be declared. We're just doing this for fun and to honor the forgotten world of wrestling history.
1. Wrestlers named Queasy, Dink, Pink, and Wink; welcome to 1994 WWF. This was during the time Pat Patterson was on his Bob Backlund kick, and he lobbied heavily for Backlund to win the WWF title, which he did on this show. You could only win the match by having your towel thrown in. Who threw in the towel for Bret Hart?
2. Repeat after me: Wrestler has good matches, fans like him, and he draws okay. Promoter doesn’t care, and wants a huge, unproven, poor worker to take his place, mainly because he’s big. Wrestler loses belt to big man, and promotion banks everything on new big man. Big man flops, as everyone knew he would. Promotion looks stupid, swallows pride, and goes back to wrestler who had good matches, fans like him, and he draws okay. Sounds like the story of Ric Flair in WCW, but in this case, we’re talking about Bret Hart. After losing to Backlund a year earlier, Bret won the WWF title back at Survivor Series ’95, defeating whom?
3. 1996 was the year of Shawn Michaels. House show attendance did increase with him on top, and while overall it was a bad year, it was a very strong year for Michaels in the ring. Nevertheless, he lost his WWF title on this show to Sid Vicious. Who was in Shawn’s corner that night?
4. Everybody knows about Survivor Series ’97 in Montreal, so we won’t even ask the obvious question about the main event. We’ll focus on one of the undercard matches: Kane vs. Mankind. What was notable about the visual presentation of this particular match?
5. At SS ’97, the WWF was on the brink of extinction, having suffered losses from the bigger, better, and more entertaining (at the time) WCW. By the time SS ’98 rolled around, it was WWF back on top, rapidly ascending to heights they would never see before (or again). On this show, there was a tournament for the vacant WWF title, won by the Rock. The finish to the final match seemed awfully similar to the finish of what other famous match?
6. WWF was riding high at SS ’99, doing incredible ratings, PPV business, and house show attendance. It was these strong years that generated so much money for the company that they’ll basically never go out of business no matter how dire things get. Lots of new talent was in the WWF around this time, such as the Big Show and Chris Jericho (losing to Chyna). This show also saw the debut of someone who would go on to be one of the best workers anyone had ever seen, at least until his body started falling apart. What future headliner debuted on this show?
7. Kurt Angle and the Undertaker wrestled for the WWF title at SS 2000. Kurt pulled some trickery in order to win the match, which is partly why fans didn’t take him seriously as a main eventer for many years. Who got involved in the finish, leading to Kurt getting the win?
Answers will be posted next week.
