Funk's Corner - Was it a Work or a Shoot?
Old School Days - On a Saturday night, my friend from high school Leonard Miller was staying over at the Flying Mare Ranch in Umbarger, Texas.
My father was wrestling that night in Hereford, Texas just 16 miles down the road. It was always a thrill for my high school friends to go to wrestling.
The Hereford Lions Club was the sponsor of professional wrestling in the Hereford Bull Barn. An "Old Timer," Mr. Doul was the promoter and representative for the Lions Club.
The card was:
Bob Geigel and Dory Funk Sr. vs Rip Rogers (Eddie Graham) and Art Nelson. Two out of three falls one hour time limit.
Ricky Romero vs El Gordo.
Two out of three falls 45 minutes time limit.
The opening warm up match was Bob Geigel vs Art Nelson, One fall ten minute time limit.
That was the whole card.
Referee that night was our high school freshman football coach, John Ussury, Son of the promoter in Littlefield, Texas John Ussury Sr.
John was small but a good athlete having played halfback for The Eastern New Mexico University Lobos the previous year. John was prematurely bald and we often called him Chrome Dome.
It was always fun in the dressing room. Hereford had an easy attitude, No big time pressure, just a fun night.
When the main event went into the ring, my friend and I had front row seats. In the third and final fall, all four men were in the ring at once and Coach John Ussury was trying to push Bob Geigel back to his corner when Eddie Graham reached up and grabbed John by the back pocket of his referee pants and yanked hard. The whole ass came out of his referee pants and to the shock of all the fans he had no underwear on. John Mooned everybody in the Hereford Bull Barn.
My friend and I were falling off our seats laughing along with the fans.
Shortly thereafter, Dory Funk Sr. won the match with the spinning toe hold. The referee continued the match even holding Dory Sr. and Bob Geigel's hand up seemingly never knowing his pants were torn and his ass was hanging out.
As we returned to the dressing room, Dory Sr., Ricky, Bob Geigel and John Ussury were setting around laughing. John was holding a pair of blue underwear in his hands. The Promoter from the Lion's Club, Mr. Doul came into the dressing room and demanded an explanation.
Coach Ussury looked up and said, "Would you believe this is the first time I ever forgot to put my under tights on before going into the ring?"

IWF Pro Wrestling School Begins 9th Year with Open House December 8-9:
Tuition Discounts & Free Tickets Offered to Visitors @ West Paterson Facility
(WEST PATERSON, NJ)- Aspiring wrestlers ready to rumble their way to stardom and become the next Rock or Hulk Hogan can fulfill their dream! This Saturday, December 8 and Sunday, December 9, 2007, from 12-4 pm, Independent Wrestling Federation hosts its ninth annual Open House Weekend at IWF Centre, 32 Willow Way, West Paterson, NJ.
Established in 1999, IWF Pro Wrestling School trains hundreds of prospects ages 15 and up from 16 states and six countries that compete in bouts across the world. During the open house, prospective students get an up-close look inside the training methods of a wrestler. IWF Centre features a wrestling ring, weight-room, video classroom, and hosts monthly exhibitions where trainees showcase their skills for family and friends.
IWF American Champion Kevin Knight, a 12-year ring veteran and IWF head trainer, leads classes that cover basic holds, high-flying moves and character development. Knight and 16 of his graduates performed on WWE Raw and SmackDown television and pay-per-view events, including former IWF Champion Damian Adams, former IWF Champion Fred Sampson, and former American Champion Travis Blake. IWF Commissioner Rich Ross recently joined the management team at USA Network & NBC Universal partnering with WWE, supervising Raw and ECW programming.
“Wrestlers excel in our program and receive WWE tryout opportunities as a result of our first-class training regimen coupled with our friendly and safe environment," said Knight. “Our top graduates literally circle the globe, traveling to Canada, Puerto Rico and Japan."
IWF graduates also network within the entertainment business appearing in television shows and commercials. Former IWF referee Kev Kage stars as Rangers hockey mascot “Bobby Granger" on the MSG Network. IWF Champion Tony Torres and IWF Tag Team Champion Justin Corino appeared on Nickelodeon's W.A.C.K. wrestling program.
“To supplement our year-round training program, we host clinics with wrestling superstars and legends," added Knight. “WWE Hall of Famer Tito Santana, Honky Tonk Man, Stevie Richards, Tom Prichard and UFC’s Ken Shamrock appeared as guest instructors."
The open house is free and visitors can tour the facility, meet wrestlers and staff, and watch an in-ring exhibition. Tuition discounts and free event tickets will be offered to those who attend on December 8 and 9. IWF also hosts a fun-filled Pro Wrestling Youth Winter Clinic for kids ages 12-17 on December 28-29-30. For information visit www.WrestlingIWF.com.
