The Phoenix Takes Flight In '08
After a long and arduous search UWA has finally found a new home. Located at Downsview Park, a former army base will now be the site where battles are forged once again. Besides UWA, this venue hosts a variety of different attractions including indoor go-karting, restaurants, and bars. After a lengthy hiatus UWA is back and ready to deliver the same kind of action that all of our fans have come to know and expect. UWA president Joe E. Slick was quoted saying "We are extremely excited to be working on this new business venture with our new venue. I look forward to once again promoting quality wrestling events and am very anxious to step back inside the ring." For the location of our new venue please visit the "Event Directions" section on our official website. UWA Hardcore Wrestling returns in our new location on Friday January 18th 2008. This event is already shaping up to be one of the greatest nights ever inside the UWA. In the meantime, enjoy this new video while you prepare for the return of UWA.
2007 Revisited
2007 was without question a time of great joy and sadness for the UWA and it's fans. The year started out with one of the greatest UWA shows to date, Hour of the Dragon. The supercard was headlined by a match intended to pay tribute to the late, great, Eddie Guerrero. Ultimo Dragon, a dear friend of Mr. Guerrero's faced off against one of the most dominant figures in New Japan's history, Black Tiger. The match held great sentimental importance to Ultimo Dragon and at that time the current Black Tiger and former Dragon Gym student, Rocky Romero. UWA fans witnessed a text book wrestling match as both men wore their hearts on their sleeves. 2007 began with a thunderous bang as fans and wrestlers alike were anticipating another landmark year for our company.
In May, UWA was set to make history once again as Ultimo Dragon's Toryumon promotion was prepared to make their Canadian debut. Set to headline yet another supercard was Japanese wrestling legend, Jushin Thunder Liger. Liger, who had not wrestled in Canada since his days spent at Stampede Wrestling in Calgary in the 1980s, was very excited to make his Canadian return. With support from New Japan's head office and Toryumon, UWA was preparing to make Canadian wrestling history once again. Fans and insiders alike proclaimed the UWA VS. Toryumon shows to be a landmark event for our company. Both events were critically acclaimed by both the Japanese and North American media. The Japanese magazine, The Weekly Puroresu, featured an 8 page article on the event and called UWA Hardcore "the number one and most prestigious wrestling company in Canada" . The show was also covered in this years issue of the Pro Wrestling Illustrated 's Top 500 magazine, the companies best selling magazine of the year.
In early June, celebrations came to a standstill, as UWA's owner Osiris announced he would be leaving in-ring action. His announcement came as a shock to the entire UWA community. Fans would see the final match of Osiris in June. After his epic last battle with Lionel Knight, Osiris praised UWA fans for their support and love for his company. Ironically his words would be the last ever spoken by any member of UWA in St. John's Hall. Ironically his last match was also the last ever performed in the now historic wrestling hall. In July, UWA received the horrible news that the City of Mississauga was attempting to shut down St. John's Hall. Hall management informed us that it would be in their best interest not to allow us to promote our July event.
In August, hall management had thought problems had been rectified and informed us we had the green light for our September show. UWA bookers, excited about the good news, went straight to work and booked a stellar event to kick off our fall shows. UWA fans, overjoyed with anticipation for the upcoming event, were abruptly saddened as St. John's Hall was forced to close their doors to us forever. For the first time UWA owners Osiris and Joe E. Slick were not able to deliver the shows as promised. Frustrated and infuriated with anger, Osiris went straight to work on locating a new home for his company. The search was long, stressful and tiresome as he had to find a venue that surpassed St. John's Hall. After looking at over 40 venues inside and outside the GTA nothing seemed right. A dark cloud hovered over his head as the future of UWA began to fade from existence. When things looked most grim, Osiris received a tip on a venue in Toronto that sounded promising. Osiris and Joe visited the venue the next day in hopes that it may become their new home. As they entered the new home they both realized that it showed more potential than St. John's Hall. After their first meeting with the owners, Osiris and Joe both agreed that they had found their new home.
With 2008 on the horizon the UWA and its committed staff prepare to once again make wrestling history. In happiness and in sadness everything happens for a reason. For good or bad, there is no denying that 2007 was a landmark year for the UWA and its fans. The change in cities and in venue can only bring cause to our flame to burn brighter. Let's make history again in 2008.
