GWH wishes a happy birthday to Hardcore Holly, who turns 45 today.

On this day in 1944, Jim Clinstock was murdered by strangulation at the hands of Dr. Henry Parker in a Charlotte, NC, dental office, allegedly in self defense. He was 38.

Emory Hale died two years ago today due to kidney failure at the age of 36.

NOSTALGIA

1934: The Masked Marvel (Ted Radcliffe) defeated Chief Lakeside in the main event at the Fair Street Arena in Atlanta for promoter Jason Thompson.

1935: Dorv Roche defeated Whitey Hewitt by disqualification in two straight falls in the main event at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Henry Weber. Also, Paul Harper defeated George Tragos in two straight falls in the semi-main event.

1936: Dutch Schultz defeated Willie Zellers in the main event at the New Coliseum in Augusta for promoter Bill Metzger.

1937: George Hagen defeated Babe Zaharias in the main event at Loew’s Grand Theatre in Atlanta for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Frank Speer. Also, Roland Kirchmeyer defeated Milo Steinborn in the semi-main event. As reported in yesterday’s report, some sources report Mildred Burke as defeating Clara Mortensen for the Women’s World Title on January 28, 1937, in Chattanooga, TN. However, on this card, Mortensen and Burke, wrestling as Mrs. Billy White Wolfe, wrestled to a draw, with Mortensen retaining the title she was defending.

1943: Nick Elitch and Rudy Strongberg wrestled to a draw in the main event at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Sammy Friedman. Also, Emir Badui defeated Al Massey in the semi-main event. Tiny Kennon was credited as being a referee on this card.

1948: Al Massey, substituting for Bibber McCoy, & Tommy O’Toole defeated Al Galento & Dan O’Connor in the main event at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones.

1954: We do not have results for this match, but Mildred Burke was scheduled to defend the Women’s World Title against Catherine Simpson at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones.

1960: The Fabulous Moolah defeated Rita Cortez to retain the Women’s World Title at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones. Also, Freddie Blassie defeated Mr. X in the main event.

1963: The Steve Boys (Steve Bolus & Steve Kovacs) defeated Bronko Lubich, managed by Homer O’Dell, & the Bat (Joe Tomasso) by disqualification in the main event at the Macon City Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Fred Ward.

1965: Buddy Fuller & Mario Galento defeated the Mysterious Medics to win the Southern Tag Team Title at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones. It was reported that Galento gave Fuller $1,000 to team with him against the Medics. Following the match, for no apparent reason, Galento attacked Fuller and the Medics helped. It was reported that both Galento and Fuller were taken to the hospital due to injuries. It was announced that the Fabulous Moolah would be wrestling in Atlanta soon.

1971: Buddy Colt, managed by Homer O’Dell, defeated Paul DeMarco in the main event at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones. A semi-main event match between Michel Dubois (Alexis Smirnoff) & Fidel Castillo and the Assassins ruled a no contest. During the match, Assassin #1 opened up a major cut on Castillo that left blood all over the ring. It was announced there would be a tournament held for the vacant Georgia Heavyweight Title on February 5, 1971. The title had been vacant since the NWA reportedly recommended such action following an appeal filed by O’Dell and Colt after Colt seemingly lost the title to Ray Gunkel on November 27, 1970. Jack & Jim Dalton participated in an autograph session for fans.

1974: We do not have results for this match, but Assassin #2, managed by Rock Hunter, & the Super Gladiator were scheduled to defend the US Tag Team Title against Thunderbolt Patterson & Assassin #1 in the main event at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for All-South Wrestling Alliance promoter Ann Gunkel. The Georgia Heavyweight Champion Missouri Mauler, also managed by Hunter, and Mil Mascaras wrestled to a draw in a semi-main event title match. Also, Ray Candy & El Mongol defeated the Mongols (Newton ‘Geto’ Tattrie & Bill ‘Bolo’ Eadie), managed by George Cannon, to retain the Georgia Tag Team Title. A match between Wayne Cowan (Dutch Mantell) and Ted Oates was ruled a no contest. The program we have for this card now bills Gunkel as Ann Gunkel instead of the aforementioned Mrs. Ray Gunkel.

1974: Mr. Wrestling #2 defeated Robert Fuller in the main event at the Macon Coliseum for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Fred Ward. Lou Thesz was the special referee for the match. Ron & Terry Garvin, managed by Jimmy Garvin, defeated Tim Woods & Roberto Soto in the semi-main event. Also, Bob Armstrong & Ricky Gibson defeated Bobby Duncum & Gary Hart.

1978: US Heavyweight Champion Blackjack Mulligan and Ricky Steamboat wrestled to a draw in a title match at the Savannah Civic Center for Jim Crockett Promotions promoter Aaron Newman. Tony Atlas defeated Ric Flair by disqualification in the semi-main event. Also, Ted Oates & Abe Jacobs defeated Mr. X #1 & #2.

1983: Ric Flair defeated Butch Reed by disqualification to retain the NWA World Heavyweight Title at the Ohio Center in Columbus for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Les Thatcher. Stan Hansen & Tommy Rich defeated Ole Anderson & Buzz Sawyer by disqualification in the semi-main event.

1985: A main event match between Ole Anderson & Thunderbolt Patterson versus Scott Irwin & Kareem Muhammad (Ray Candy) ruled a no contest in Saginaw, MI, for Championship Wrestling from Georgia promoter Ole Anderson. Tommy Rich defeated Bob Roop by disqualification in the semi-main event, and Ron Garvin defeated Ox Baker.

2005: Jason Cross defeated Sonny Siaki in a main event no disqualification match at the GCW Sports Arena in Columbus for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Jerry Oates. Also, Tracy Brooks defeated O.D.B. in the semi-main event. A.J. & Damien Steele defeated both the Southside Trash (Big Daddy & Rowdy Matiz) and Bad Company (David Young & Bull Buchanan) in two separate matches. Jimmy Rave and John Bogie wrestled to a draw in the opener.
