NEWS
The Senate-passed version of the bill that would substantially change regulation of pro wrestling and MMA in Georgia was derailed by the Judiciary Committee of the House of Representatives on Monday. In a move befitting a wrestling storyline, the Judiciary Committee invoked Senate rule 3-1.2(d) which states "all bills for raising revenue or appropriating money shall originate in the House of Representatives" in accord with the Georgia Constitution. The Judiciary Committee limited the annual fee for promoters to $100, as stated in the current law, and removed the licensing fee for wrestlers. Wrestlers would still be required to be licensed and undergo basic medical testing. In addition, the process to appeal suspension or revocation of a license has been clarified, and the misdemeanor liability is now limited to failure to obtain a license or falsifying information on a license application. As was the case with the changes made by the Senate Regulated Industries and Utilities Committee, all of the revisions made by the Judiciary Committee were favored by the Georgia Wrestling Promoters Advisory Committee, headed by Bill Behrens, who was in attendance at today's meeting. To continue on its path to becoming state law, the revised version must pass both the House and the Senate by this Friday, April 4, the 40th and final legislative day of the 2008 Georgia General Assembly. If signed by Governor Purdue the legislation would go into effect July 1. (Larry Goodman)

NOSTALGIA
APRIL 1, 1935 (MONDAY) – AUGUSTA, GA – NEW COLISEUM (Jack Browning – Promoter) > Jack McArthur versus Al Maynard > Southern Lightweight Title Match: Dobie Osborne defeated Pat Newman* to win title / Notes: Aside from the match between Dobie Osborne and Pat Newman, no documented results for the remaining matches on this card have been found. Newman had been the reigning Southern Lightweight Champion since he defeated Jack Ross on March 11, 1935, in Augusta.
APRIL 1, 1936 (WEDNESDAY) – AUGUSTA, GA – NEW COLISEUM (Bill Metzger – Promoter) > Bill Middlekauff versus Bruce Nolan > Jim Henry versus Dutch Schultz / Notes: No documented results for this card have been found.
APRIL 1, 1937 (THURSDAY) – AUGUSTA, GA – NEW COLISEUM (Bill Metzger – Promoter) > Ted Taylor versus the Green Dragon > Mike Nazarian versus Speedy Lawrence / Notes: No documented results for this card have been found. It was reported that the matches on this card were part of a tournament to determine a challenger to face Bobby Chick for the World Light Heavyweight Title.
APRIL 1, 1946 (MONDAY) – SAVANNAH, GA – SAVANNAH MUNICIPAL AUDITORIUM (Lou Masters, Dick Leonard, and Buster White – Promoters) > Jack Dillon & Jack Wentworth defeated Tommy Londos & Joe Bennicasa > Jack Singer defeated Tommy Todd
APRIL 1, 1948 (THURSDAY) – ATLANTA, GA – ATLANTA MUNICIPAL AUDITORIUM (Paul Jones – Promoter / Georgia Championship Wrestling) > Battle Royal: Bibber McCoy defeated the Blimp, Iron Man Talun, Tom Mahoney and Natie Brown > Chief Indio Cherokee defeated Chris Godkiss > Jack Ross, Jr., defeated Jack Reeder > Al Massey defeated Jim Coffield / Notes: It is unclear as to the reason for the battle royal. Dick Lever was credited as being a referee on this card.
APRIL 1, 1949 (FRIDAY) – ATLANTA, GA – ATLANTA MUNICIPAL AUDITORIUM [P] (Paul Jones – Promoter / Georgia Championship Wrestling) > Tom Mahoney defeated Bobby Lane > Rex Mobley and Jim Wallis wrestled to a draw > Al Massey defeated Jack Kelly > Nick Carter & Don McIntyre defeated Rebel Russell & Babe Zaharias / Notes: The program we have for this card is the first to not list staff members of the Atlanta office, so we must assume the same people referenced before may or may not be still involved. We do know that Bill Hartman and Simon Davis are referenced in future programs, so they are likely still involved at this point in the same positions. One new name that surfaces in this program is Betty Anne Wood, who is credited with writing the “Ringside Roundup” column. Within this program, there is also a reference to the fact that the main event matches may be aired on local television, though it does not state where this can be found in regard to station. It simply states that “television goes on at 10:00 sharp and televises the remaining part of the matches” with a reference that Thad Horton’s radio coverage is perhaps simulcast for the television end as well. It does appear as though it may have just begun recently, as it is in answer to “many fans are questioning” where they can find it. Seems odd they would answer the question without fully answering it, stating only what time it appears, without directing you to a specific channel. In research, there were only two local television stations in Atlanta, being WSB Channel 8 (now Channel 2), which debuted on September 29, 1948, and WAGA Channel 5, first broadcasting on March 8, 1949. In this same program, a nod is given to a WAGA employee (Marian Hine) being in attendance as a guest at ringside, so it is more likely that the younger station of the two was giving some exposure to the late matches in order to offer programming to viewers captivated by the early days of television. It would be 1954 before the promotion got it’s first full time slot for airing programs produced to provide enough excitement to draw fans to the local arenas. It was announced that Lozano Martinez had contacted Paul Jones for some Atlanta bookings.
APRIL 1, 1955 (FRIDAY) – ATLANTA, GA – ATLANTA MUNICIPAL AUDITORIUM (Paul Jones – Promoter / Georgia Championship Wrestling) > Hard Boiled Haggerty defeated Aldo Bogni > Andre Drapp defeated Carlos Rodriguez > Tokyo Joe defeated Jerry Graham by disqualification > Wild Red Berry defeated Gorgeous George / Notes: Gorgeous George was escorted to the ring by his valet Jeffries.
APRIL 1, 1960 (FRIDAY) – ATLANTA, GA – ATLANTA MUNICIPAL AUDITORIUM (Paul Jones – Promoter / Georgia Championship Wrestling) > Vince Bryant versus Jack Terry > International Tag Team Title Match: Ray & Dickie Gunkel* versus Serge Malkoff & Bad Boy Hines > No DQ Match: Freddie Blassie defeated Haystacks Calhoun / Notes: Aside from the match between Freddie Blassie and Haystacks Calhoun, no documented results for the remaining matches on this card have been found. There was no referee for the match between Blassie and Calhoun. It is unclear to us at this time how Ray & Dickie Gunkel came to be recognized as International Tag Team Champions. The last reference we have shows Ray Gunkel & Don McIntyre defending the title against Freddie Blassie & Skull Murphy on March 27, 1959, in Atlanta.
APRIL 1, 1966 (FRIDAY) – ATLANTA, GA – ATLANTA MUNICIPAL AUDITORIUM [P] (Paul Jones – Promoter / Georgia Championship Wrestling) > Chin Lee defeated Bad Boy Hines > Louie Tillet defeated George Harris > Southern Tag Team Title Match: the Infernos defeated Bobby Shane & Mario Galento to win title > Klondike Bill defeated Swede Karlson > Ray Gunkel & Enrique Torres defeated the Mysterious Medics / Notes: J.C. Dykes managed the Infernos. The Infernos used a fireball to defeat Bobby Shane & Mario Galento. Freddie Blassie managed Klondike Bill. The match between Klondike Bill and Swede Karlson was billed as a “Battle of the Giants”. Tony Nero was credited as being a referee on this card. It is unclear as to how the Southern Tag Team Title had been vacated. The last reference we have shows Mario Galento & Dutch Savage being recognized on October 29, 1965.
