WWE Smackdown & ECW House Show Results - 11/15/06
Location: Glasgow, Scotland

Dave Tennant sent in the following report:

Once again, the Black & White Wrestling Army descended on Braehead Arena in Renfrew (just outside Glasgow) Scotland for the second Wednesday night running. Tonight's card had looked pretty mediocre, prior to an ECW presence being on the card, but with the Extremists added, a more compelling night of wrestling action was promised.

Unlike last week, there was no pyro to deafen us, but frankly that job was done by the thousands of screaming kids in attendance. After the brief play of the SmackDown theme song, Teddy Long journeyed to ringside to ask if he could be the ring announcer for tonight's action. He was entertaining the whole night, and though Tony Chimel is a decent announcer, Long is a great choice for house shows with his natural charisma.

So lets get to our first match of the evening...........

Tag Team Title Match - Brian Kendrick & Paul London (C) vs KC James & Idol Stevens

This match proved to be one of the better affairs on the card, despite the notable absence of Michelle McCool from ringside. It was a traditional affair, with James & Stevens isolating Kendrick and working on him with some sharp, old school offence. However Kendrick made the hot tag to London and there was only one outcome after that - Kendrick & London retain.

2nd up, we moved to ECW and...........

CM Punk vs Mike Knox (With Kelly Kelly)

Kelly flirted with Punk prior to the match starting, which inevitably drew the ire of Knox. Knox dominated in a lot of the match, and showed up more impressively than I have seen him on ECW TV. Of particular note was a nice knee stomp combo and a rather innovative backbreaker. However, Punk rallied as Kelly Kelly grew tired of her overprotective boyfriend and several striking combinations, a uranage and an anaconda vice later, Knox tapped out. Punk proceeded to get what looks like will be his girl before too long and that was that.

Roll on match 3..............

Triple Threat Crusierweight Title Match - Chavo Guerrero vs Funaki vs Gregory Helms (C)

This was our first major departure from the teased lineup as Chavo had been scheduled to face Matt Hardy, with neither Funaki nor Helms booked to appear on the card. Nevertheless, an entertaining matchup followed, with all 3 men enjoying a spell on top and no shortage of Helms & Guerrero double crossing each other. The end came as Funaki delivered a fantastic Tornado DDT to Chavo. He ended up outside the ring from the impact and Helms capitalised on a recovering Funaki with a nice mahistrol cradle for the 1-2-3.

We were then greeted with another departure from the established card.......

Todd Pettengill Mk 2 (aka The Miz) vs Tatanka

I was shocked at this match, as the advance card had said that Miz would officiate a Best Body Contest with Tatanka facing Bobby Lashley. However, this is what we got. Prior to the match, Teddy Long berated Tatanka for his recent change in attitude, saying he was disappointed in him and that he had let the fans down with his actions. The crowd however were totally dumbfounded as to whether to cheer for the warpainted veteran, or TPMk 2 (who was comprehensively booed by yours truly I might add). Nevertheless, Miz did show some wrestling ability and was kept well away from the mic, which was a bonus. Tatanka beat the tar out of his opponent but Miz rolled the Native American up for the win.

Next up, we went back to ECW, where the crowd was just a little less confused.........

Singapore Cane Match - Matt Striker vs The Sandman

Sandman was damn over tonight. Bland generic instrumental music or not. The match wasn't the greatest ever but the two men did the best they could to keep the use of the cane to that which made it meaningful. It was more of a comedy exchange than anything else as in the end, inevitably, Sandman got the cane and beat Striker around the body several times with it, before a knockout strike that saw the ECW original get the win.

And next we had the Wrestling Enthusiasts match of the night..................

William Regal + Finlay vs Matt Hardy + Chris Benoit

When I say that Regal got the most jeers of anyone tonight, I am not joking. In an environment populated by thousands of screaming mad, passionately Scottish kids, an old school wrestling Englishman is always going to get booed out of the building and tonight was no exception. For my part, I gave the man a round of applause for saying he wouldn't waste a breath on us stupid Scotsmen. As Hardy & Benoit entered however, Benoit spied an opportunity to get some cheap pops and took a Scottish Saltire in the ring and waved it to great acclaim. Finlay then went on the mic to say we were all just English without the brain. Fantastic knockabout stuff it really was.

So the match. The action wasn't the most memorable of all time but it was never not impressive either. Irish walking sticks and Little Bastards were seen as all 4 men gave a good account of themselves and Benoit, as he always does, shined after he was given the hottest of tags from Hardy. Earlier in the match he gave without doubt the hardest chop I have *EVER* seen to Regal and he proceeded to do the same to both men. Some Germans, a flying headbutt and crippler crossface later, we had our winners.

Little Bastard once again appeared and was berated by the UK men and in retaliation took both down in one of the funniest things I've ever seen, before running off Benny Hill style. Regal then pronounced that they would never EVER be coming back to Scotland and I (with some of Teddy's help admittedly) got the Na-Na-Na-Na chant going.

After intermission, we had an Extreme Rules Match............

Rob Van Dam vs Paul Heyman (With Personal Security)

Heyman had his crack security *coughBashamscough* accompany him to the ring and set the scene well for the match. Van Dam found the going tough at times being outnumbered 3-1 but in the end, The Sandman appeared to save Heyman and take the security out. A table was then introduced and Van Dam proceeded to give Heyman an almighty 5-Star right through it. A helluva spot for a house show, so credit to both guys. Heyman indeed, seemed to be down for an eternity but was helped back to the locker room area on his feet by the security guards. Either he was really hurt tonight, or he did one helluva good selling job.

After the match, Teddy wondered how he could top that, and the only way he could think of was to have a Divas Best Body contest. Kristal & Layla appeared for it, but sadly neither Ashley (though I now hear she may have been injured to explain her absence), nor Michelle McCool did, despite being advertised for it on the advance card. Ah well, anyway both girls showed their wares and did a pretty convincing job of making sure the males stayed in their seats. Then as a winner (no doubt the crowd would've chosen Layla) was going to be announced, Kelly Kelly appeared and did her thing, showing us the skimpiest, near see through bikini I have ever seen. Indeed from up in the gods it did look like she'd stripped to her birthday suit, and given the whistles from the crowd I likely wasn't alone in that thought. Kristal felt slighted by all this and a catfight resulted, which saw her go to the back before a winner could be chosen. Teddy however got lucky as he was given a chance to dance with both the remaining chicks. It's good to be the GM, playa.

So with that out of the way, we were up to almost half 10, the same time we got out last week after the whole card. The crowd was getting pretty restless now, especially as the weather in the area tonight was atrocious and with it being a school night. With that in mind plans changed from the announced World Heavyweight Title match of Booker vs Batista, to involve the brothers of destruction and their scheduled opponents for the evening as well...........

6 Man Tag - King Booker, MVP & Mr. Kennedy vs Batista, Kane & The Undertaker

First of all, I must mention the introductions. First of all, Queen Sharmell walked down to the ring alone when the King was announced and said only she introduced her man. So the whole rigmarole was gone through again. Booker then talked to the crowd (and I have to say, as much as he was booed he was getting acclaim - there's no doubt in my mind that the guy is over with this gimmick) in his usual manner, introducing MVP (he really does look like a Power Ranger btw) & Kennedy. Kennedy looked for his old school microphone but when it didn't arrive, Teddy said he had the mic, not the ceiling and all he had to do was ask for it. Funny way to get out of the lack of the mic. Kennedy said he only had 4 words for the crowd - ALL HAIL KING BOOKER. And de he ever deliver it. That guy is definitely part of the future of wrestling. The faces then appeared; first Kane, then the Animal, then the Super Over Phenom.

Sadly however, the introductions had taken so long that by the time the match got underway, the crowd were well and truly restless, with many heading towards the exits. Sadly, the match was the biggest letdown of the night. There was barely any action until Kane got isolated in the wrong part of town after trying to be the Red Baron up top. After like what seemed an eternity, Taker got the hot tag and from there all hell broke loose as expected. The end saw all 3 faces hit their finishers for a triple pin.

The celebrations however, were extremely short lived as the fans were then making a real beeline for the exits, myself included. It was a damn shame that the main event didn't live up to expectations and that the men weren't given the props they deserved (especially seeing the Brothers of Destruction team up again - that was a treat). But frankly, the show ran on far too long and felt like too much had been attempted in the changes from what had been expected. The show felt overboooked compared to last week and one guy I do feel sorry for is Bobby Lashley. Have I missed something with that? Did he pick up an injury the other night because I was shocked that he was nowhere to be seen.

On exiting, I heard a number of people saying that they thought the length of the show was far too much, and they were also disappointed in how the main event was played out, saying how little action there was. Some even called it ridiculous.

The rest of the night was entertaining though and given the chance I will be back at another Fed event. However I warn the Fed that a lot of people that were in attendance tonight may not have the same view, and that would be a dangerous thing, given how valuable these overseas tours are for their attendance levels and money making opportunities. Overall, I reckon a C, but it would've been a whole grade better had the card been better scheduled timewise (take out the Miz/Tatanka match and cut down on the stalling during some of the matches) and the main event more impressive.
