Ring of Honor on Sinclair Results
March 10, 2012
Report by: Jason Namako of Wrestleview.com

Hello everyone, and welcome to this week’s Ring of Honor on Sinclair recap. If you all are ready, then let’s get on with the show!

We see a video highlighting last week’s #1 contender’s match between Eddie Edwards & Roderick Strong before the usual intro.

Kevin Kelly & Nigel McGuinness welcome us to the show from the Du Burns Arena in Baltimore, MD. Kelly talks about the main event for the 1st “Showdown in the Sun” iPPV, but also says that the Ring of Honor World Title will be defended on both “Showdown in the Sun” iPPVs. So with that, Kelly takes us to a video that explains “The Blind Destiny Challenge”.

Ring of Honor Executive Producer Jim Cornette says that for both “Showdown in the Sun” events, he wanted to feature a Ring of Honor World Title match on both shows. “The problem is, how do you make a match for both shows when you don’t know who will be the champion after the 1st show”? “It became even tougher when the 1st show’s main event became a triple threat match”. “That’s where the Blind Destiny Challenge comes into play”. “All 3 participants in the triple threat main event on Night 1, Davey Richards, Eddie Edwards & Roderick Strong, will be signed to single matches on Night 2”. “Whoever wins the triple threat match on Night 1 will defend the title on Night 2 against their scheduled opponent”. “Their opponents, however, will not know if their match is for the title until after Night 1”. “So this week on TV, there will be 3 qualifying matches to determine the 3 challengers for Blind Destiny”. “Jay Lethal vs. Kenny King, with the winner facing Roderick Strong”. “Adam Cole vs. Kevin Steen, with the winner facing Eddie Edwards”. “And finally, Michael Elgin vs. Kyle O’Reilly, with the winner facing Davey Richards”. “Once the challengers are determined, its up to Blind Destiny”.

During the commercial, we see a hype promo for the “Showdown in the Sun” iPPVs as Kevin Kelly interviews the All Night Express, who will be facing the Young Bucks on both shows in what is being called a “Dual Duel”. Kenny King says that “in South Florida, they used to babes, they used to bikinis, they used to beaches”. “But the All Night Express at the Ft. Lauderdale War Memorial is gonna bring the blood and the broken bodies because one night, we have a street fight against the Young Bucks”. “Man, you are from Rancho Cucamonga, man, you play hopscotch in the street down there, y’all are dead”. Rhett Titus says that “the 2nd night with Tornado Tag Rules, all 4 men in the ring at the same time, me and my dog gonna take you out one by one”.

Back from commercial, we see a pre-match promo from Kenny King, who says that “the All Night Express is no stranger to hard work and tonight, Kenny King puts his work in”. “I have been selected to be a part of the Blind Destiny Challenge down in sunny South Florida”. “All I gotta do is beat Jay Lethal”.

We then see a pre-match promo from Television Champion Jay Lethal, who says that I keep saying I am the Ring of Honor Television Champion and that I am the gateway to the Ring of Honor World Title”. “That being said, if anybody deserves a chance, a shot at the World Title, it is definitely me”. “Unfortunately, I got my shot 2 weeks ago and I came up a little short, but hell, there was 20 people having a riot at ringside while it all happened.”

We go back to King, who says that “Jay Lethal, man you have been hot like fire since you have been back to Ring of Honor, but I’ll tell you what, it is my destiny to hold that Ring of Honor World Title”. “So, all you gotta do is step into that ring and see how lethal the Pretty Boy Pitbull really is”.

Then, we go back to Lethal, who says that “let’s put it all out on the table right now”. “I have got to get back into the Ring of Honor World Title picture and a win over Kenny King will send me to Florida”. “And you know what Roderick Strong, if you win that World Title, you’ll have for one night only because that is my destiny”.

Lethal calls for the Lethal Injection, but as he prepares to charge, King goes off the other side. However, Lethal catches him coming in and hits the Lethal Combination for another nearfall. Lethal then misses a clothesline and King hooks him in an O’Connor Roll with a Backlund Bridge for a nearfall.

Then, Lethal hooks King in a rollup with his own bridge for the victory.

Back from commercial, we go to pre-match comments from the guys in our next match.

Kevin Steen says that “Adam Cole, don’t worry about having to wrestle your partner and friend, Eddie Edwards”. “All you should worry about is rebuilding your career from the ground up after the beating I give you tonight on this very program because unfortunately for you, your cute little face is all that stands between me and the possibility of a Ring of Honor World Title shot”. “And if you have been following what I have doing since the beginning of this year, I am all about winning that title, holding this company hostage and making Jim Cornette lose his godd***n mind”. “So Adam, I’m sorry for what I am gonna do to you, but you’re just a casualty of what I need to do to achieve my destiny”.

Back from commercial, its time for this week’s “Inside Ring of Honor”.

The first topic this week is the announced main event for Night 1 as in a triple threat match, World Champion Davey Richards will defend against both Roderick Strong & Eddie Edwards.

Roderick Strong says that “this triple threat idea Cornette has, sucks, it sucks bad”. “Last week, I beat Eddie Edwards before he beat me”. “I’m the one who should be getting the title shot”.

Eddie Edwards says that “I don’t think the triple threat match was called for”. “I’m not saying my win over Roderick Strong was any more legitimate than his was over me, but what Jim Cornette should have done was just re-start the match and get 1 winner”. “But Cornette, he’s thinking like a promoter, he’s thinking triple threat equals box office”.

We go back to Strong, who says that “Eddie can’t beat Davey, but I can”. “But I can’t beat Davey with Eddie on my back trying to beat me, so 1st, I have to eliminate Eddie, then I have to beat Davey and that sucks”.

Back to Edwards, who says that “Triple Threat matches are hell, at anytime during the matches there is 2 guys trying to beat the crap outta you at the same time”. “But for that same reason, at anytime, anybody can win”. “But more importantly, anybody can lose and that includes Roderick Strong and even the World Champion Davey Richards”.

Back to Strong, who says that “I have to get those 2 morons to beat the hell outta each other and that way, all’s I have to do is beat on what’s left and that, that wouldn’t suck”.

The next topic is the announced match also on Night 1 as Lance Storm comes out of his self-imposed retirement to take on “The Prodigy” Mike Bennett as a way to teach Bennett some respect for Ring of Honor. Kevin Kelly says that there may be comments next week from Storm, but right now, we go to comments from Mike Bennett.

Mike Bennett says that “Now I knew I was a star, but I didn’t realize I was such a star with the old folks, because apparently, Lance Storm is such a huge fan of mine, that he demanded a match with me”. “Demanded a match to be in the ring with someone so amazing as me but apparently also, to shut my mouth”. “Well Lance, come shut my mouth March 30th and let me be serious for a minute”. “When I’m done with you, I’m gonna beat you so fast, that you can still catch the early bird special”.

The final topic is the announced match for the Ring of Honor World Tag Team Titles on Night 2 as the Briscoes defend against the former champions, Wrestling’s Greatest Tag Team. We see video highlighting their feud before we get quick comments from the Briscoes. Mark Briscoe says that “We said it and we meant it, that if we don’t get Haas & Benjamin in Florida, we ain’t even showing up”. Jay Briscoe says that “after what Haas did to my brother 2 weeks ago, we promise y’all, down in Ft. Lauderdale, somebody’s getting carried outta there”.

-Commercial-

During the commercial break, we see a hype promo for “Showdown in the Sun” as Kevin Kelly interviews the other team in the “Dual Duel”, the Young Bucks. Nick Jackson comes in mocking Rhett Titus’s knee injury as Matt Jackson says “Poor Rhett, but Kenny King & Rhett Titus, you wanna fight us twice, we will beat you twice”. “You want a streetfight?, we can fight too, we’re not just pretty, we can also fight”. Nick Jackson says that the next night, Tornado Tag, we’re ready for that”. Matt Jackson closes by saying “We’ll see you in Florida, dorks”.

Back from commercial, Kevin Kelly & Nigel McGuinness are joined at the commentary table by Ring of Honor World Champion Davey Richards for the main event. Kelly asks Richards that under the circumstances, it must be hard to pick a winner. Richards says that “its the lesser of two evils, I have a fight either way”. “Obviously Kyle is my training partner and I always want to give him the opportunity to shine, but I know he’ll bring the fight”. “On the other hand, I wanna test myself against the best and Elgin is one of the strongest guys, if not the strongest guy in wrestling, so either presents a challenge”. “But as long as they can both fight with honor, its a win-win for the fans and that’s what really matters”. Kelly then takes us to pre-match comments before the main event.

Kyle O’Reilly says that “it seems no matter what the situation, when the World Title is on the line, friendships, partnerships, they suffer”. “Suddenly, I’m in a position where I can wrestle Davey for the World Title just by winning one match”. “I will tell you this, if that match does happen, I won’t handle it like Eddie Edwards did”. “Davey and I will fight with honor and remain friends, but Michael Elgin, I have to deal with you first”. “Unbreakable vs. American Strong Style.” “Elgin, go hard or go home”.

Truth Martini says that he really hates for a man like Kyle O’Reilly to worry that he has to face his hero, Davey Richards”. “Well Kyle, between me and you, no need to worry, because that is not going to happen because there is no way you are gonna get past Unbreakable Michael Elgin tonight.” Roderick Strong says “Now Elgin, I want you to take O’Reilly tonight and get that match with Davey because just in case something goes wrong in that triple threat, I have a back-up plan”. Michael Elgin closes by saying “O’Reilly goes down”.

All of a sudden, Roderick Strong runs out and hops on the apron to distract O’Reilly. O’Reilly then locks in the Crossface as the crowd is chanting “Tap”. Elgin gets to his feet and tries for something, but O’Reilly turns it right back into the Guillotine choke. However, Roderick Strong gets on the apron to distract the referee as Richards leaves the commentary table, extremely pissed off by Strong’s antics. O’Reilly breaks the hold and has words with the official. But as he turns around, Elgin lifts him up and connects with the Buckle Bomb. Richards then makes his way to ringside and he and Strong begin to trade blows. Richards then sends Strong into the barricade.

While this is going on, Elgin lifts up O’Reilly and hits the 360* Powerbomb for the victory.

Winner and will face Davey Richards on 3/31: “Unbreakable” Michael Elgin by pinfall (360* Powerbomb)

The House of Truth celebrate on the outside while Richards is pissed off in the ring as we go to credits.

My Thoughts

Very good episode of Ring of Honor this week as I really liked that the show focused on one thing, that being the Blind Destiny Challenge, as it did a good job of making the ROH World Title the “ruby red slippers”, as Hunter Golden would like to call it, that everyone was fighting for and wanted so bad. I really like when things like that are made to be important and ROH did a good job of it in this episode.

The opening match with Lethal & King was solid, albeit it somewhat disappointing. Lethal did not bring a lot of fire with him and it seemed that he was going through the motions in this. King, however, was very good here. Decent on the sell, but very nice babyface fire on the comeback. Solid match, but it was just a tad underwhelming.

Adam Cole & Kevin Steen was pretty good. Cole is a damn good FIP and to me, is a real throwback of an 80s to early 90s white meat babyface that a crowd can get behind. Crazy to say that in 2012, but it has been successful for him, especially in recent months. Steen continues to do great in his role as the anti-hero that people cheer and I thought he and Cole had a pretty good back and forth match with some believable nearfalls towards the end for Cole. Good match.

Finally, the main event to me was the best thing on the show. I thought Richards was actually solid on commentary during this and I liked the involvement of Roderick Strong towards the end. Kyle O’Reilly definitely put a much better performance than usual for him. Great strikes, pretty good on the FIP and also showed some decent fire on the comeback. The real star of the match, however, is Michael Elgin. Just amazing with his power spots, but at the same time, does a good job of making the nearfalls from his opponents look believable for a man of his size. These two have really good chemistry with one another and put on a very good and entertaining main event.

Overall, a very good all-around show this week, with just one thing that was a tad disappointing.
