Luchadore Spotlight of the Week

Ultimo Guerrero (CMLL)

This week??’s spotlight is shone on CMLL??’s new World Heavyweight Champion: Ultimo Guerrero. The name Ultimo Guerrero translates into The Last Warrior and though his last name is Guerrero he is not kin to the famous Guerrero family. Guerrero began training at Gym El Ranchero in the late 1980??’s into the early 1990??’s and he made his debut September 19, 1990. He wrestled around his hometown of Durango for several years as Condor Dorado and El Flanagan before joining Konnan??’s upstart Promo Azteca. There he donned the name Ultimo Guerrero and began teaming with his training partner Super Punk who changed his name to Ultimo Rebelde (which translates to the Last Rebel). They began wrestling as The Hooligans and become pretty successful. The team was set lose their masks but before the match could take place Guerrero jumped to CMLL in late 1997. Guerrero stayed around the lower and midcard with his biggest win being his Mask vs. Mask win against Mr. Aguila (Essa Rios in WWE). In 1999 Guerrero teamed with the legendary Blue Panther and won the annual Gran Alternativa Tournament. Soon after Guerrero won a Torneo Cibernetico match to declare a #1 Contender to Great Sasuke??’s NWA World Middleweight Championship. That match was Guerrero??’s first major singles title shot and his first big singles match in Arena Mexico. He lost the match but it gave him great exposure. Guerrero then began teaming with fellow young star Rey Bucanero and were mildly successful. Then, Satanico recruited them to become a part of his new Los Nuevos Infernales (The New Infernal). Soon after Guerrero & Bucanero became very successful as a tag team and won a CMLL World Tag Team Titles #1 Contenders tournament defeating Lizmark Sr. & Lizmark Jr. in the finals. A month later Guerrero & Bucanero defeated the champions Mr. Niebla & Villano IV for the titles and then Guerrero began a short feud with Negro Casas which he won. In 2001 Guerrero and Bucanero turned on Satanico costing him a match with rival Tarzan Boy. Guerrero and Bucanero started their own group called Los Guerreros del Infernal (The Warriors of The Infernal) along with Tarzan Boy. Mascara Magica soon joined the group and Satanico recruited Averno & Mephisto to his group. The two groups feuded over the ???Infernal??? name and it ended inside a Cage of Death Match in which Magica lost to Satanico. Los Guerreros eventually changed their name to Los Guerreros del Infierno (The Warriors of Hell). Guerrero and Bucanero then began a feud with El Hijo del Santo & Negro Casas over the tag titles eventually losing their titles to them on November 2nd. In May of 2002 Guerrero and Bucanero regained their titles from Casas and Santo and then began feuding with Mexico??’s Most Wanted (Halloween and Damian666). Los Guerreros ended the feud by successfully defending the titles against MMW on July 5th. Guerrero and Bucanero spent the rest of the year feuding with Vampiro & Shocker over the titles and ended the feud with another successful title win in September. In December Guerrero defeated Shocker to win the CMLL World Light Heavyweight Championship which was his first singles Championship. Guerrero continued to his feud with Shocker into 2003 with both men trading wins but Guerrero retaining his title. Then, Guerrero and Bucanero once again retained their titles in a big match against Vampiro & Lizmark Jr. but Shocker found himself a new partner in LA Park (original La Parka) and began feuding with Los Guerreros over the titles again. In early 2004 the two teams traded the Tag Titles between each other before Los Guerreros finally ended the feud and regained their titles, but in their first title defense on June 25th Los Guerreros lost the titles to Atlantis & Blue Panther. On CMLL??’s big 71st Anniversary Show Guerrero successfully defended his Light Heavyweight Title against LA Park in a Match of the Year candidate. In early 2005 Guerrero began a feud with the then young Mistico in which Guerrero eventually lost a big singles match. Guerrero then began a short feud with Dos Caras Jr. over the CMLL Light Heavyweight Championship which Guerrero won. Guerrero and Bucanero then joined up with Universo2000 in his feud with Perro Aguayo Jr.??’s Perros del Mal group. Guerrero then helped turn Atlantis rudo and together with Rey Bucanero they formed Los Guerreros del Atlantida. In 2006 Guerrero successfully defended his Light Heavyweight Championship against Hector Garza and then won the Gran Prix Tournament (which features stars from Mexico, Japan, & the United States) all within a month of each other. At the end of 2006 Guerrero and Tarzan Boy turned on Rey Bucanero and ripped his Los Guerreros tights. Bucanero then defeated Guerrero for his Light Heavyweight Championship ending Guerrero??’s 3 ?? year reign as Champion (a belt which Bucanero still holds). Guerrero (along with his young partner Euforia) was defeated by the team of Mistico and La Sombra in the 2007 Gran Alternativa and afterward Guerrero publicly asked Dr. Wagner Jr. to join him and attempt to dethrone Mistico and Necro Casas for their tag titles. The match was held on July 13, 2007 and the team of Guerrero and Wagner won the match and the titles but lost them back to Mistico and Casas the following Friday. Guerrero and Wagner cursed each other and blamed one another for the loss leading to their feud. Guerrero ended up costing Wagner a big match against Mistico and then showing the biggest sign of disrespect by ripping off Wagner??’s mask. Guerrero challenged Wagner to a Mask vs. Mask match but it was never answered, though they continued to feud. In 2007 Guerrero took the hair of the legendary Super Parka (LA Park??’s uncle and Volador Jr.??’s father) at an INDY show as well. In early 2008 Guerrero and Rey Bucanero reconciled and Bucanero rejoined Los Guerreros. 2008 has been a very big year for Ultimo Guerrero as he teamed with Negro Casas and Atlantis to defeat CMLL World Trios Champions: Hector Garza, Perro Aguayo Jr., & Mr. Aguila for the belts in August of 2008. He and Rey Bucanero traveled to America for the first time to take part in the 2008 World X-Cup along with Volador Jr. and Averno. The team impressed many within TNA as well as fans and eventually won the tournament. Since then Guerrero and Bucanero has wrestled on TNA house shows and have been said to be returning soon. In December of 2008 Ultimo Guerrero defeated Dos Caras Jr. for the CMLL World Heavyweight Championship in possibly the biggest match of his career.

Ultimo Guerrero continues to be one of the best workers and top rudos in all of Mexico. His future in CMLL is very bright but a future in America seems could be very bright as well as TNA Wrestling became very impressed by he and Rey Bucanero (along with Volador Jr.). Regardless of where Guerrero finishes his career he will go down in Lucha Libre history as one of the best.
