CMLL Duo to Have A Shot at New Japan Titles

This week New Japan stripped the team of Apollo 55 (Taguchi & Prince Devitt) of their IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Tag Titles due to not defending them in over 30 days. Now, the upcoming Super J Tag Team Tournament will crown a new championship team. CMLL stars Valiente & Mascara Dorada are teaming up in that tournament and are actually facing the former champions in the 1st Round! How awesome would it be for the CMLL team to beat the former champs and then go on to win the belts. Apollo 55 could then come down to Mexico to get them back. The full lineup for the tournament is below.

Minis Mask Match Set
The long talked about Bracito de Oro/Pequeno Warrior Mask vs. Mask Match has officially been signed. The proposed date for the match is 04/30 right now but not set in stone yet.

The History of Gran Alternativa & Info (updated to include last years winners info)
Since 1994 the CMLL promotion has used the Torneo Gran Alternativa (the tournament was not held in 1997, 2000, & 2002 but was held twice in 1996 & 1998) to help usher in young talent to be seen as equal to other top veteran talent. 8 teams are involved in the tourney and all 8 teams consist of a veteran and a young wrestler. This tournament has helped to build such stars as Hector Garza, Shocker, Rey Bucanero, Ultimo Guerrero, Alan Stone, Mistico, La Mascara, La Sombra, as well as others. Also, great veteran stars (and some legends) such as Negro Casas, Silver King, Emilio Charles Jr., Blue Panther, Felino, Villano IV, El Hijo del Santo, Atlantis, & Perro Aguayo Jr. have helped build these young stars in this tournament. In it’s history only 3 men have won the tournament twice: the legendary Emilio Charles Jr. and the two top current wrestlers in CMLL: Mistico & Ultimo Guerrero. Also, only two men have won the tournament as a young wrestler and then later as a veteran: Mistico & Guerrero once again. In 1994, the tournament’s first year, veteran Negro Casas teamed with then young star Hector Garza (this was even pre-WCW for Garza) and the two team went on to defeat the teams of Halcon Negro Jr. & Dr. Wagner Jr. (another future superstar), Pierroth & Guerrero de la Muerte (now Toxico), and in the finals Satanico & Arkangel de la Muerte. Garza is now one of the top wrestlers in CMLL (as well as in AAA in the past) and has traveled all over the world competing in such companies as WCW and TNA Wrestling in America. In 1995 the team of Silver King & Shocker went onto win the tournament defeating Pierroth Jr. & Chicago Express, Bestia Salvaje & Corazon Salvaje (now known as Azazel), and Dr. Wagner Jr. & Astro Rey Jr. (who later became Mephisto) along the way. Shocker, like Garza, is now a top star in CMLL (also was in AAA as well) and has also traveled all over the world competing for TNA (like Garza) and even was the star of a McDonalds commercial a few years ago. In 1996 two different tournaments were held. In the first, the team of Bestia Salvaje & Chicago Express won the tourney defeating Dos Caras Sr. & Bronco, El Hijo del Santo & Olimpico (a huge win), and Atlantis & Atlantico in the finals. Chicago Express is one of the few exceptions to the rule as he never really got going anywhere. The 2nd tournament that year was a bit more successful in the long run as Emilio Charles Jr. teamed up with the young Rey Bucanero to win it defeating the teams of Lizmark Jr. & Jaguar, Satanico & Karloff Lagarde Jr., and Hector Garza & Mr. Niebla. Bucanero went onto become a very successful star in CMLL winning several championships and too has competed in both the United States and Japan. In 1998 Emilio Charles Jr. repeated this time teaming with Tony Rivera to defeat Bestia Salvaje & Guerrero de la Muerte in the finals. Rivera has since garnered moderate success around Mexico in both CMLL and IWRG. In 1999 once again two tournaments were held in the year. The first saw the team of the legendary Blue Panther & the young and hungry Ultimo Guerrero winning the tourney defeating great teams like the legendary Fuerza Guerrera & Rey Bucanero, the previous years winners Emilio Charles Jr. & Tony Rivera, and in the finals Mr. Niebla & Atlantico. Guerrero has since gone onto become one of the biggest stars in CMLL as well as Mexico in general and has too competed all over the world. The 2nd tourney in 1999 saw the team of Felino & Tigre Blanco win it and defeat the legendary Mascara Ano 2000 & Sangre Azteca, Ringo Mendoza & Ricky Marvin, and Scorpio jr. & Fugaz (now known as Ramstein). In 2001 the team of Olimpico & Psicodelico Jr. (the son of the original and cousin of Dos Caras Jr.) teamed up to win this years tournament defeating Gran Markus Jr. & Dr. X, Blue Panther & Virus, and Black Warrior & Sangre Azteca on the way to their win. Psicodelico Jr. bounced around Mexico and the United States wrestling for various INDY’s after leaving CMLL before singing a developmental contract with the WWE. He has since been released by the WWE, however. In 2003 Villano IV teamed with Alan Stone to defeat Mascara Ano 2000 & Sagrado in the finals. Alan Stone has become a midcard fixture in Mexico for CMLL and AAA (currently) as well as forming a great tag team wtih his brother. In 2004 the legendary El Hijo del Santo teamed up with the man, that at that time, was seen as the future of the business in Mistico to win the tournament. The historic duo defeated the father-son team of Misterioso I & Misterioso II, Atlantis & Volador Jr., and Ultimo Guerrero and Dr. X along the way. Mistico, along with Guerrero, are probably the biggest success stories of this tourney. After this tourney Mistico went straight into the Main Event and hasn’t left since. In 2005 Atlantis & La Mascara teamed up to win the tourney defeating Damian666 & Apocalipsis, Ultimo Guerrero & Sangre Azteca, and Dr. Wagner Jr. & Misterioso II along the way. La Mascara is currently one of the top young stars in CMLL. In ’06 Perro Aguayo Jr. teamed up with Misterioso II (in his 3rd attempt in the tourney) to win it defeating Lizmark Jr. & Mascara Purpura, Hectro Garza & Hombre sin Nombre, and Ultimo Guerrero & Nitro along the way. In 2007 Mistico returned to the Gran Alternativa this time as a veteran and he teamed with La Sombra to win it again beating Heavy Metal & Super Nova, Dr. Wagner Jr. & Mascara Purpura, and Ultimo Guerrero & Euforia along the way. La Sombra has since become, like Mascara, one of the top young up-and-comers really getting noticed in 2008 and forming a great tag team with Volador Jr. eventually winning the Tag Titles. Last year Ultimo Guerrero teamed with youngster Dragon Rojo Jr. to win the tourney defeating Shocker & Angel Azteca Jr., Blue Panther & Axel, and Dos Caras Jr. & Metalik. The tournament was actually the debut of the Dragon Rojo Jr. persona (he had previously wrestled as Diamante Negro Jr.). Rojo is now a member of the Poder Mexica group is a co-holder of the CMLL World Trios Titles. This years tournament feature great young-veteran teams such as Angel de Oro & Mistico, Blue Panther & Rey Cometa, Rouge & Shocker, Hector Garza & Angel de Plata, Atlantis & Camorra, Mr. Niebla & Tiger Kid, Averno & Olvora, and Yujiro & Semental (which I’m not sure who is who because Semental debuted in 2005 while Yujiro debuted only a year earlier). The teams to really watch this year are Mistico & Angel de Oro and Blue Panther & Rey Cometa. On 09/25 Shigeo Okumura teamed with Yujiro and won the 2009 Gran Alternativa Tournament and for the first time a Japanese tandem walked away with the tourney crown. The success of Gran Alternativa continued with these new winners. Though Okumura hasn’t done much since then Yujiro on the other hand has done quite well. He took the hair of Black Warrior in October but did (along with Naito) lose his hair in a Double Hair vs. Hair Tag Match against El Terrible & Texano Jr. right before No Limit left to return to Japan. Upon returning to Japan No Limit defeated the legendary Team 3D (of TNA) to capture the IWGP Tag Team Championships for the first time! A few months later they got revenge on Terrible & Texano as they made their way to Japan and were defeated by the new champs. No Limit continue to carry those belts to this day.

This week AAA announced that recently released TNA star, Christopher Daniels, would be coming into AAA soon. No word on a start date yet.

* NOTES *
– La Parka Jr. came out after the 2nd bout and challenged L.A. Park to a match at TripleMania. He offered Park to come up with the stipulation, any stipulation he wanted (Mask vs. Mask, Name vs. Name, whatever). Parka Jr. then said L.A. Park turned his back on AAA when he left and that AAA owns the La Parka name so that makes HIM the true La Parka.
– El Generico made his debut in AAA and got pinned.
– Wagner beat Sabu clean after putting Sabu through a table and then hitting the Wagner Driver.
– L.A. Park ran out and hit Parka Jr. with a Martinete and then he and the rudos beat on the tecnicos. Dr. Wagner Jr. ran out to even the odds and after chasing off the rudos suggested that he, Pimpi, and Octagon form a new version of WagnerManiacs.
– El Zorro and the rudos went after El Mesias’ arm (legit hurt arm) and eventually forced him to submit. Rudos continued to attack the tecnicos after the match until Joaquin Roldan ran out with Vampiro to make the save. Vampiro then turned on Joaquin and hit him with a Nail In the Coffin.

– El Mesias supposedly had shoulder surgery and may not be back for TripleMania but is back in a match a little over a week later? What the hell? Either this was just part of the storyline and the shoulder really isn’t hurt or he won’t be wrestling here.

LuchaWorld.com has started their annual Top 100 Luchadores List for 2009, check it out as it’s always a great list and great read.

Team Mexico In CHIKARA Possibly Out
CHIKARA reported on their twitter today that Team Mexico was having problems getting a flight out of Mexico to come in for the King of the Trios. No official word yet but it doesn’t look good for them getting to the tournament. This is a big disappointment as Team Mexico was one of the better looking teams in the tournament. If they can’t get there by Friday I would expect them to keep trying to get Turbo in for Rey de Voladores on Saturday at least. Also, it looks like CHIKARA is saying that Valiente hasn’t returned calls or e-mails they have sent out nor does he have his plane ticket so Valiente, AT THE LAST, will not be at the show. This really seems fishy all the way around but DO NOT expect Valiente to be in Philadelphia for King of Trios at all this weekend.
