Averno/WWE

This week CMLL released a Press Release from Averno where he once again reaffirms that he is not going to the WWE and this time even claims he’s never had any discussions with them (which we know is completely untrue). At the moment it looks like Averno’s deal with the WWE is definitely not going to go through.

AAA Celebrates 20 Year Annivesary

20 years ago (May 15, 1992) CMLL booker Antonio Pena broke away from his long time employer and formed his own company: Asistencia Asesoria y Adminstracion (AAA) along with one of the biggest luchadors in the country: Konnan. Pena also brought a group of extremely talented young stars over from CMLL like El Hijo del Santo, Blue Panther, Octagon, Negro Casas, and Eddie Guerrero along with young upstarts Rey Misterio Jr. and Psicosis. Pena pushed forward new and exciting stars featuring amazing high flying as well as the crazy gimmicks and characters he came up with (characters like Psicosis, La Parka, Abismo Negro, Histeria, etc. came from Pena’s mind). For the first time in a long time the oldest wrestling promotion on the Earth (CMLL) finally had a legit contender facing it, and for some time AAA truly was taking it to CMLL with huge crowds and amazing events. Some of the most exciting events and matches in Lucha Libre took place in AAA and it was the stars of AAA that popularized the cruiserweight/high flying style in America in WCW. On October 06, 2006 AAA’s head and it’s mind, Antonio Pena, passed away due to a heart attack. Since that time Pena’s family members Marisela Pena (sister), Joaquin Roldan (brother-in-law), and Dorian Roldan (nephew) have run AAA alongside Pena’s closest confidant over the years and his first star, Konnan. For all of the frustrations that AAA causes me (and many other fans) there is no way to discredit the impact the company has had on Lucha Libre and the amazing talent it has produced, and for a company that many said wouldn’t last months, a 20 year anniversary is an amazing milestone. Congratulations to the Pena family and AAA.

AAA 05/19 “Night of Champions” TV Taping Lineup
1) AAA Minis Title: Mascarita Dorada vs. Mini Psicosis (c)
2) AAA Reina de Reinas Title Fatal 4-Way Bull Terrier Match: Sexy Star (c) vs. Mari Apache vs. Fabi Apache vs. Lolita
3) AAA Cruiserweight Title Extreme Match: Jack Evans (c) vs. Teddy Hart vs. Psicosis vs. Juventud Guerrera
4) AAA Trios Titles: Monster Clown, Murder Clown, & Psycho Clown (c) vs. Mascara Ano 2000 Jr., Texano Jr., & Toscano
5) AAA Latin America Title 5-Way Dance: L.A. Park (c) vs. Perro Aguayo Jr. vs. Dr. Wagner Jr. vs. Cibernetico vs. Chessman
* NOTES *
– “Night of Champions” comes a month early but no sign of the World Title (Mesias is injured) or either Tag Titles (World Tag Titles or Mixed Tag Titles).
– The Women’s Title and Cruiserweight Title Matches are perfect examples of one of AAA’s biggest problems. They have two matches there, both 4-Ways that could be absolutely excellent matches (especially the Cruiserweight match) yet instead of just letting the talent go out there and put a great match on they add stupid, unneeded stipulations to them. What possible reason could you have for putting 4 women in a Dog Collar Match? That makes NO sense. Why is it not enough that 4 of the best high flyers in the world (two of them legends: Juvi & Psicosis) are all in the ring together and could have an awesome match that you have to add stupid garbage wrestling to it? It’s so frustrating.

INDY & OTHER NEWS

Rey Misterio Sr.’s Sons Arrested

This week Rey Misterio Sr.’s sons Hijo de Rey Misterio I and another younger son (not believed to be Hijo de Rey Misterio II) were arrested on drug possession in Mexico. Police claim the two were fighting outside their fathers house in front of their vehicle. After breaking up the fight the police searched the vehicle and found what the cops described as a “kilo of ice” (methamphetamines). A kilo (about 2 pounds) of ice would be worth around $50,000 on the street, not what you would consider something for personal use I wouldn’t think.

Gargano Defends DG-USA Belt
At this past weekend’s EVOLVE 13 event in Concord, NC Open the Freedom Gate Champion Johnny Gargano successfully defended the belt against fellow DG-USA star, the high flying AR Fox. Fox had to defeat DG-USA’s Ricochet and Samurai del Sol and CHIKARA’s Jigsaw in a wild Fatal 4-Way earlier in the match to get the shot at the belt.

Lucha Stars in Mel Gibson Movie
A few weeks ago I reported about Lucha legend Blue Demon Jr. starring in a new Mel Gibson film called “Get The Gringo” (http://www.wrestleview.com/viewnews.php?id=1335036316). That movie was released this month on DirectTV’s InDemand PPV services and not only was Blue Demon Jr. in the film, but Luchador Magno (who you may remember from his stints in ROH and Lucha Libre USA) was also featured. The two were shown facing each other at a Lucha Libre event held inside of the Mexican prison (yes you read that right) Mel Gibson’s character was held in. You can check “Get The Gringo” out on DirecTV all month long on InDemand and next month on every other PPV provider before it hits stores in DVD and Blu-Ray later this Summer.

8) NWA International Jr. Heavyweight Title Triple Threat: Ultimo Dragon (c) def. Ultimo Guerrero & Ohara to retain the title!
* NOTES *
– The Scramble Match was elimination rules via over the top and it came down to Dragon, Guerrero, & Ohara with Guerrero tossing Dragon & Ohara out at the same time, but for some reason (that noone could possibly give a reason for that makes season) instead of giving Guerrero the belt which should be the result there they instead called it a draw and held a 3-Way between them. Dragon ended up winning the match after a bunch of pointless run ins and screwiness.
– Japanese high flying legend Hayabusa made an appearance after the show.
