CMLL

No CMLL Involvement at Wrestle Kingdom
This week New Japan Pro Wrestling announced the card for their big annual “Wrestle Kingdom” show to start the year (in January) at the Tokyo Dome and surprisingly there will be no CMLL wrestlers on the card. This is the first time since CMLL & NJPW started their working relationship in 2009 that there will be no CMLL representatives on that card. In 2009 the original Mistico teamed with Ryusuke Taguchi & Prince Devitt in a win over Averno, Jado, & Gedo. In 2010 Ultimo Guerrero & Averno failed in their attempt to win the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Tag Team Titles from Apollo 55 (Devitt & Taguchi). In 2011 Mascara Dorada & La Sombra defeated Jushin Thunder Liger & Hector Garza and this year Mascara Dorada teamed with Liger, KUSHIDA, & Tiger Mask IV to defeat Atlantis, Taichi, Taka Michinoku, & Valiente.

AAA

TNA & AAA to work together at Lockdown PPV
The Wrestling Observer reported this week that TNA may work with AAA for their Lockdown PPV in March which is taking place at the Alamodome in San Antonio, TX. In 1997 the WWE took this exact same approach using several AAA stars on their Royal Rumble card in the Alamodome. Perro Aguayo Jr., Venum, Maniaco, Mosco de la Merced, Octagon, Blue Demon Jr., Tinieblas Jr., Heavy Metal, Abismo Negro, & Histeria (Super Crazy) all worked dark matches while Mascarita Sagrada, La Parkita, Mini Mankind (Especrito II), and Mini Vader (Especrito I) worked a PPV Pre-Show Match. Hector Garza, Perro Aguayo Sr., & El Canek teamed together against Jerry Estrada, Heavy Metal, & Fuerza Guerrera on the actual PPV card and Mil Mascaras, Pierroth Sr., Cibernetico, & Latin Lover competed in the Royal Rumble Match itself. AAA and TNA have had a working relationship for several years now so we could see some AAA storylines bleed over into TNA leading to this PPV to try and help draw more Hispanic fans.

* NOTES *
– Juventud was injured during the Ladder Match and Fenix got hurt in the end as well. Daga gets his first major title.
– Pentagon Jr. and Parka Negra were new characters introduced with it being expected that they are young AAA stars repackaged. The Wrestling Observer claims that Pentagon Jr. is actually Dark Dragon and if that’s the case the feud between he & Octagon Jr. could be amazing. Parka Negra has been rumored to be Mortiz but that hasn’t been confirmed.
– In the biggest surprise of the night Texano Jr. upset El Mesias to win the Heavyweight Title. Texano pinned Mesias clean as well.
– L.A. Park escaped the cage in the Main Event and was then attacked by TNA’s Jeff Jarrett. When Cibernetico escaped Los Bizarros attacked him. It came down to the feuding Vampiro & Chessman and eventually Chessman escaped the cage with the help of Konnan & Dorian Roldan to take Vampiro’s hair.

LUCHA SPOTLIGHT

WHERE ARE THEY NOW? WHEN WORLD’S COLLIDE PPV

In 1994 WCW’s Eric Bischoff joined up with Mexico’s AAA (along with some stars from Puerto Rico’s IWC) to produce the very first American Lucha Libre PPV (as well as the first English-language Lucha PPV) called “When Worlds Collide.” This event led to the Lucha Libre invasion of the mid 90’s first in ECW (with Psicosis, Juventud Guerrera, La Parka, Konnan, and even Damian 666 making numerous appearances in ECW) and then to a bigger scale in WCW. When you look back at that incredible event you will see many stars that continue to wrestle today and that became big stars in wrestling but also some tragedies there as well.

The opening bout was a showcase of the Mini’s where Mascarita Sagrada & the original Octagoncito faced off against Jerrito Estrada (probably the biggest mini) and Espectrito in which Sagrada & Octagoncito got the win. Following this event Sagrada remained one of the top Mini’s in Mexico but also found some success in America. He made several appearances in WCW in the mid 90’s but then signed with the WWF in 1997 becoming Mini Nova. Sagrada’s “When Worlds Collide” partner Octagoncito also signed with WWF in 1997 and was repackaged as Mosaic. After some exciting matches but not much effort by WWF to put any pushes behind the minis eventually Max Mini (Mascara Sagrada Jr.) faced Mini Nova in a Mask vs. Mask Match in which Nova lost his mask. Sagrada then left WWF and returned to Mexico under his Mascarita Sagrada name again where he remained until once again signing with the WWF (now WWE) as they started the brief “Juniors Division” which didn’t last very long. Sagrada has since returned to Mexico and remains one of the top independent Mini’s in Lucha Libre. After leaving WWF Octagoncito has also remained one of the top independent Mini’s in lucha but also has made appearances for promotions like the short lived Lucha Libre USA. Jerrito Estrada would eventually don a mask and become Mini Psicosis to lead the Los Mini Vipers faction in AAA. He still wrestles for AAA and is the current AAA Mini-Estrella Champion having held that belt since April of 2011.

The 2nd bout was a wild Trios Match that featured the rudo trio of Fuerza Guerrera (father of Juventud), Madonna’s Boyfriend aka Louie Spicolli, and the original Psicosis defeating the trio of Rey Misterio Jr., Heavy Metal, & Latin Lover. This was the introduction to the rest of the world of Rey Misterio Jr. (the first time I saw him was on a VHS tape of this event) who would obviously go onto become possibly the biggest Luchador in the history of Lucha Libre. After becoming one of the bigger stars in Mexico he took his craft back to America where he became unbelievably popular in his short (but amazing) stint in ECW and then turned the collective heads of the entire nation in WCW. Misterio was unquestionably the biggest star to come out of the Lucha invasion for WCW not only winning the Cruiserweight & Tag Team Titles multiple times, but also being involved in feuds and matches with the likes of Kevin Nash, Ric Flair, Eddie Guerrero, and many others. After WCW folded Rey returned to his roots in Mexico competing for the CMLL promotion for the first time then debuted with the WWE where he remains today a former 3-time World Champion. Misterio (now Rey Mysterio) remains one of the biggest and most popular stars in the world of wrestling and an icon in Mexico. Rey’s partners on the PPV Heavy Metal & Latin Lover both still wrestle today as well. Metal has bounced back and forth between CMLL and AAA over the last two decades (as well as brief appearances in TNA where he took part in the first X-Cup events). Currently Metal makes sporadic appearances on the independent scene and AAA. Latin Lover actually returned from the business in 2006 after suffering a severe knee injury doing a stunt in a dance competition (the dance competitions actually made him more famous than Lucha Libre), but returned 2008 coming back to AAA. In 2010 Lover left AAA and joined CMLL briefly before leaving and returning to the independent circuit where he remains. On the other side of that PPV match was the team of Fuerza Guerrera, Psicosis, & Louie Spicolli. Guerrera remains a trainer Mexico as well as one of the top Independent luchadors today. Psicosis made a name for himself in America with his legendary battles with Rey Misterio Jr. in ECW and WCW. He won the Cruiserweight Title in WCW on 2 occasions but was never used to his potential and lost a lot of confidence in himself as a result of the way he was used (or lack thereof) in WCW. When he left WCW he briefly returned to ECW and had a very memorable feud with Tajiri and then returned to Mexico where he bounced between AAA & CMLL as well as making a few appearances for TNA (including the very first TNA X-Division Title in the Round Robin Match against AJ Styles, Jerry Lynn, & Low-Ki). In 2005 Psicosis once again faced his greatest rival (Misterio) at the ECW reunion “One Night Stand” event for the WWE. His performance earned a contract alongside Juventud Guerrera & Super Crazy as the stereotypical “Mexicools” faction. Psicosis was once again misused by an American promotion and barely lasted a year there before returning to Mexico and CMLL. In 2007 he returned to AAA using the Nicho el Millionario name. He began wrestling a more brawling and hardcore style rather than the technical/high flying hybrid-style he had been known for. He and Joe Lider formed a very successful tag team called La Hermandad 187 and held the AAA World Tag Team Titles for a record 551 days. In 2012 Nicho began carrying his old Psicosis to the ring with him after turning on his long time partner Lider. Lider eventually “burned” (storyline) Nicho’s face by throwing a fireball in his face. The storyline was that not only did the fireball burn Nicho’s face horribly but it also sent him into a state of dementia leading him to believe that he was still the masked Psicosis leading to him once again donning the Psicosis mask which he continues to do. Louie Spicolli wrestle briefly in WWF, WCW, and ECW before dying due to an overdose of pills. Unfortunately Spicolli is one of 4 former Los Gringos Locos members from Mexico that have died. The other 3 were Eddie Guerrero, Love Machine (Art Barr), and Black Cat.

In the third match on the card The Pegasus Kid, Too Cold Scorpio, & Tito Santana defeated Jerry Estrada, the original La Parka, & Blue Panther. Pegasus Kid is of course Chris Benoit and everyone knows he went on to become a huge star in both WCW & WWE winning the World Title in WWE before the hideous murder-suicide he committed several years ago. 2 Cold Scorpio would become a very popular star in ECW but an even bigger star in Germany & Japan after a brief stint in WWF. Scorpio continues to work on the independent scene in America as well as extensively in Japan & Europe. Tito Santana was already a legend at the time of When Worlds Collide but continued to wrestle all over the world including briefly for WCW in 2000. He still wrestles to this day occasionally most recently as a part of CHIKARA’s King of the Trios Tournament this year. Jerry Estrada was able to make it to the WWF after When Worlds Collide but it didn’t last long and he eventually returned in 2003. Estrada’s partners still compete and are big stars to this day. La Parka now wrestles as L.A. Park and after becoming very popular in WCW he became an even bigger star in Mexico working all over the place including both CMLL and AAA. He wrestles primarily for AAA now and had an incredible feud with La Parka Jr. (the man who took his name after he signed with WCW). His son Hijo de L.A. Park is an up and coming star now as well. Blue Panther has been a part of some of the most amazing matches with one of them being the incredible Mask vs. Mask match against Villano V in 2008 where the legendary Panther lost his mask that he had wore since the 70’s. Panther continues to work for CMLL and has become a behind the scenes player for the promotion as well.

When Worlds Collide’s Semi-Main Event was the amazing 2/3 Falls Mask vs. Hair Match between the teams of La pareja del Terror (Eddie Guerrero & Art Barr) and Octagon & El Hijo del Santo. This is one of my personal favorite matches ever and the match which truly made me fall in love with Lucha Libre. Octagon & El Hijo del Santo continue to wrestle in Mexico to this day with Santo remaining one of the few Independent wrestlers that can still draw huge crowds in Mexico. Santo has worked for both AAA & CMLL since this PPV and has been involved with disputes with both promotions as well. He works in the independents now including his own Todos x Todo promotion. Octagon still works for AAA but has had to slow down a lot and has become very limited due to age and injuries. In 2012 Octagon took American star Samuray del Sol under his wing and eventually dubbed him Octagon Jr. giving him a similar mask to that of his own. The great rudo team of La Pareja de Terror became a tragedy. Art Barr died due to a heart attack right before he and Guerrero were set to debut for ECW. Guerrero would go on to become a star in ECW, a bigger star in WCW, and then a true superstar and legend in WWE. Guerrero went on to win the WWE World Championship but after beating his many demons his life was still taken prematurely dying of heart failure. In 2006 Guerrero was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame. His wife Vickie continues to work for the WWE while his nephew Chavo Guerrero Jr. (and his brother Hector) works for TNA.

The Main Event saw tag team partners turned bitter enemies Perro Aguayo Sr. and Konnan face off in a bloody Steel Cage Match with the tecnico Aguayo coming out on top. Konnan was already a huge star in Mexico but went on to work for ECW and then WCW for years, and later TNA. In 2007 Konnan returned to AAA and became one of the bookers while his in-ring career was scaled back considerably due to injuries and illness. Konnan continues to book for AAA and has been the leader of the rudo faction La Legion Extranjera for years. The legendary Aguayo retired in the early 2000’s and was inducted into the AAA Hall of Fame in 2012. His son Perro Aguayo Jr. has become one of the bigger rudos in Mexico, much like his father.

When Worlds Collide was the introduction of the amazing world of Lucha Libre to many American fans (like myself) and was the launching pad for Lucha to become more than just a Mexican phenomenon and it continues to grow among American fans today. 3 wrestlers on the card became WWE World Champions (Benoit, Guerrero, & Mysterio) and at least 10 bonafide legends (Fuerza, Psicosis, Mysterio, Parka, Panter, Santo, Octagon, Guerrero, Aguayo, & Konnan).
