The 2009 WV Faculty Mid-Year Awards (Part 2)

Hello once again students! I hope you all enjoyed part 1 of 5 in what we believe are the best and worst of 2009 in the world of professional wrestling. Now today I present Part 2 of 5, in which we will answer four of the twenty one questions I presented to the WrestleView Faculty earlier last week.

What you will see are the answers for these four questions. They will be answered by eleven of WrestleView’s professors and their answers are provided for your entertainment. Please read carefully and if you have any questions or remarks on our picks, you can e-mail them at mistervwv@yahoo.com.

In Part 1 of our Award ceremony, we answered the following questions:

Best Newcomer
Best Weekly TV Show
Best TV Match of 2009 (a match that occurred on a Weekly TV Show)
Best Gimmick
Worst Gimmick

You can find our choices in yesterday’s column: click here.

So, once again here are the Faculty Members that provided me with their answers for the next four questions:

* David Stephens (That’s A Wrap! and ECW recapper)
* Josh Boutwell (Viva La Raza! TNA/ROH recapper)
* Jose Marrero (Wrestling Rumblings)
* Anthony Valvo (From the Desk of Mr. V)
* Matt O?Brien (Notes From the Nosebleeds)
* Phil Chroniger (On Second Thought?)
* Josh Piedra (The Shoot)
* Doug Lackey (Reality From Ringside)
* Chris Kelly (Ex-TNA Epics recapper and fill in columnist)
* Sean Hurley (The Sharpshooter)
* Mike Tedesco (WWE Superstars and Smackdown recapper)

And now, for part 2 of the 2009 Mid-Year Awards

Question #5
Who is the most underrated wrestler of 2009?

David S. – TOMMY DREAMER (WWE) – almost no one gives the guy respect anymore, yet he has been able to capture and run with the ECW Title and have several good programs that have really benefited the younger talent on the roster.

Josh B. – JOHN MORRISON (WWE Smackdown). This guy has so much potential and hopefully we’ll see it in a feud for the big belt sooner rather than later.

Jose M. – JOHN MORRISON (WWE).

Anthony V. – CHRIS SABIN (TNA). I know I may get verbally assaulted for this, but I don?t care. Gymnast wanna-be aside, the former X-Division champion has only won THREE out of twenty two televised matches in the first six months of 2009. That is just terrible for a former up and coming superstar for TNA.

Matt O. – AJ STYLES (TNA).

Phil C. – AJ STYLES (TNA)…he’s underrated by his own company.

Josh P. – I harped about this in the chat rooms of Wrestling News Live, I think I may have even mentioned it in one of my columns, but if not, I am going to mention it now. A man with so much potential and so much entertainment is just wasting away in the ranks of the WWE right now and, if given the proper chance, could really turn into the next big star… and I am talking about TAFKA “The Redneck Messiah” James Gibson… better known to you ‘E marks as JAMIE NOBLE (WWE).

Doug L. – GAIL KIM (WWE). Sure, WE know she can perform, but does the normal fan who attends a live event? How would they know? She has only appeared on television 5 times since signing with WWE!

Chris K. – BIG SHOW (WWE).

Sean H. – BETH PHOENIX (WWE).

Mike T. – (TIE) CHARLIE HAAS AND MVP (BOTH WWE).

Question #6
Who is the most overrated wrestler of 2009?

David S. – KURT ANGLE (TNA) – he is not worthy of the hype anymore.

Josh B. – JOHN CENA (WWE RAW). He’s Superman supposedly but bores me to tears whether it’s a promo or a match.

Jose M. – STING (TNA).

Anthony V. – KEVIN NASH (TNA). The guy is best when working the mic or announcing as Chet Lemon. As a wrestler, he does not deserve the victories that he gets for this company. Nash is just one of the reasons why the future of TNA worries me a bit.

Matt O. – MICK FOLEY (TNA).

Phil C. – KURT ANGLE (TNA).

Josh P. – I don’t even have to think about this one. The most overrated wrestler is the 20 minute bump machine followed by the five minute comeback special… the guy who, according to Hunter Golden, is the lisping antelope of professional wrestling… and that man is TYLER BLACK (ROH).

Doug L. – BOOKER T (TNA). His facial expressions and movements within the ring remind me of an animatronics character you would find at Chuck E. Cheese. Someone please tell Booker that he does not need to dramatically pose before and after every single maneuver he pulls off?

Chris K. – DOLPH ZIGGLER (WWE).

Sean H. – BATISTA (WWE).

Mike T. – TRIPLE H (WWE). Really hit or miss this year.

Question #7
Who has the best finisher in the business this year?

David S. – PAUL LONDON?S SHOOTING STAR PRESS (INDY FEDS) – forever and always.

Josh B. – EVAN BOURNE?S ?AIR BOURNE? SHOOTING STAR PRESS (WWE RAW). Nothing else needs to be said.

Jose M. – RANDY ORTON?S RKO (WWE).

Anthony V. – JOHN MORRISON?S STARSHIP PAIN (WWE). It is pretty close between that and Evan Bourne’s Shooting Star Press. I may be wrong, but Morrison’s finisher to me is a bit more difficult because of the space and the height to execute the move.

Matt O. – AJ STYLES? STYLES CLASH (TNA).

Phil C. – RANDY ORTON?S PUNT (WWE).

Josh P. – Holy Hell, who do I pick? There are some jaw-dropping finishers that make you yell OUCH, there are some that are so simple, yet so effective that it could classify, and there are some that don’t look like they hurt, but they just look cool… but the winner for me falls into the simple category. It’s simple, it’s versatile, it’s effective, and he can pull it off WAY better than Johnny Ace or Diamond Dallas Page. That finisher would belong to “The Legend Killer” RANDY ORTON and his RKO (WWE).

Doug L. – RANDY ORTON?S RKO (WWE). Argue with me all you want but riddle me this? who has taken the RKO and sold it to perfection that is not a regular in-ring talent? It is the only maneuver that can be accomplished and look just as fierce on anyone it is applied to. Orton’s leap into the air, his legs flailing violently as he crashes the victim’s head into the canvas? and looks just as violent when done on HHH as it does on his wife.

Chris K. – (TIE) SHEAMUS? ROCK BOTTOM/BACKBREAKER AND JOHN MORRISON?S STARSHIP PAIN (WWE).

Sean H. – BRYAN DANIELSON – CATTLE MUTILATION (ROH).

Mike T. – (TIE) REY MYSTERIO?S 619 AND JEFF HARDY?S SWANTON BOMB (BOTH WWE).

Question #8
What was the worst match of the year (can be either PPV or TV)?

David S. – JENNA VS. SHARMELL IN VICTORY ROAD (TNA). I’m siding with Claudio Castagnoli on this one, this was a disgrace. If Jenna was stunning to look at it would be one thing with the stripper gimmick, but she is mediocre at best.

Josh B. – HORNSWOGGLE VS. CHAVO GUERRERO JR. – Tuxedo Match (WWE RAW). God, that was just bad. Along with the Pig Pen Match as well.

Jose M. – TOO MANY TO COUNT.

Anthony V. – BOOKER T VS. TNA REFEREES (TNA). I believe that this occurred sometime in January. However this match was uncalled for and had no value to it whatsoever. There are many that deserve this dubious honor, but this one just takes it so far in 2009. I wonder if Booker T realized what he was doing before he signed with TNA.

Matt O. – TRIPLE H VS. RANDY ORTON (WWE) WM XXV.

Phil C. – DIVA?S BATTLE ROYAL (WWE) – WM XXV.

Josh P. – I saw Mr. V’s response and once I did, I had actually forgotten about this match. At first I was going to say HHH vs Orton from Wrestlemania 25, but thanks to Mr. Valvo, I was reminded that BOOKER T VS. 2 REFEREES (TNA) made HHH vs Orton look like Match of the Millennium. Dear God…

Doug L. – RANDY ORTON-HHH (Wrestlemania 25) (WWE). A month of build up and hype. The hatred and animosity spilling over. To say that this contest was going to be ?personal? was an understatement. The reason it is not the worst is not because of it being so short or not involving a more gruesome display of violence, but because of how poorly it was contrived. A match that we could have seen any Monday night for free instead of on pay-per-view for nearly $60?

Chris K. – HOG PEN MATCH, EXTREME RULES (WWE).

Sean H. – 25 DIVA BATTLE ROYAL – WM XXV (WWE).

Mike T. – CHAVO GUERRERO VS. HORNSWOGGLE (WWE)- Take you pick on which show.

**BONUS SEGMENT**

I received Sean Hurley’s picks for the previous five questions and I will post them on there for your enjoyment, students. I do this because I know many of Prof. Hurley’s fans would like to see what he chose for the 2009 Awards.
