Revenge! Tanahashi topples Nakanishi at ?Dominion 09? to win IWGP Heavyweight Championship
Manabu Nakanishi’s title win last month over Hiroshi Tanahashi came as a huge surprise to many. Not only was Nakanishi not really ever a serious title contender, but he hadn’t truly been in the mix in quite some time. Considering Tanahashi’s standing and push at the time, it just made the outcome all the more shocking.
Order was more or less restored to the New Japan universe this past Saturday night, as Tanahashi defeated Nakanishi at the ?Dominion 09? show in Osaka. The show was a complete sell out of 5,800 fans and they were boisterously behind Nakanishi, making it almost a road-game like atmosphere for the #1 Contender. The two wrestled for nearly 30 minutes before Tanahashi finally managed to hit a high fly flow for the win.
After the match, Pro Wrestling NOAH’s Takashi Sugiura, hot off a huge win earlier in the night over Hirooki Gotoh, emerged from the crowd and entered the ring, challenging Tananashi for his title. Tanahashi has accepted the challenge and as of right now, the two are scheduled to face each other in Sapporo before the G1 Climax Tournament kicks off.
Also, former tag team partners and GBH faction heads Toru Yano and Togi Makabe clashed, with Yano getting the win thanks to an assist from new CHAOS co-founder Shinsuke Nakamura. Team 3D successfully defended their IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Championships, defeating Karl Anderson & The Giant Bernard. The win will ensure that Team 3D will surpass the six month mark with their tag belts in hand.
Pro Wrestling NOAH had a huge night, winning both inter promotional matches, with Takashi Sugiura defeating Hirooki Gotoh in a match up that had been building for nearly five months. The two had faced each other on three separate occasions in tag team contests before being paired off here. Sugiura won the match with his Olympic Slam. In the other match up, GHC Heavyweight Champion Go Shiozaki defeated Kazuchika Okada in what was said to be one of the better matches of the night. Okada, much like his performance in the Korakuen tag a month ago, wasn’t easy for the newly crowned champion to put down.
In other action on the card, AKIRA & Jushin ?Thunder? Liger teamed up and defeated the tandem of Koji Kanemoto & Nobuo Yoshihashi in tag team action. Takao Omori & Yutaka Yoshie teamed up to defeat Super Strong Machine and Mitsuhide Hirasawa. Ryusuke Taguchi & Prince Devitt defeated Milano Collection AT & Taichi to earn a shot at the Motor City Machine Guns and their IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championships, while Tiger Mask was able to unmask arch-rival Black Tiger for the fifth consecutive time. Also, the CHAOS faction (Shinsuke Nakamura, Takashi Iizuka, Jado and Tomohiro Ishii) defeated Hiroyoshi Tenzan, Yuji Nagata, Wataru Inoue and Tomoaki Honma in six man tag team action.

Motor City Machine Guns Set to Defend IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Tag Titles
The Motor City Machine Guns (Alex Shelley & Chris Sabin) are prepping to make another defense of their IWGP Junior Tag belts, as they’ll take on the team of Ryusuke Taguchi and Prince Devitt on July 5th at the Korakuen Hall in Tokyo. Devitt in particular is coming off a huge run in the Best of the Super Juniors Tournament, where he turned a ton of heads by finishing second.
July Tour Dates Announced, Tanahashi vs Sugiura Title Match Slated For July 20th
IWGP Heavyweight Champion Hiroshi Tanahashi will make his first title defense against Pro Wrestling NOAH star Takashi Sugiura on July 20th at the Tsukisamu Alpha Court Dome in Sapporo. This is the first time anyone from Pro Wrestling NOAH has challenged for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship. The two have met for top titles before, as back in 2003, both Masahiro Chono and Yuji Nagata challenged Kenta Kobashi for NOAH’s GHC Heavyweight Championship. The announcement comes on the heels of Sugiura’s big win over Hirooki Gotoh in Osaka and the death of NOAH President Mitsuharu Misawa. This is an important match for Sugiura, who needs to elevate himself up the ladder into the top tier of Japanese stars, as he’s not only become a big player in NOAH, but has been THE focal point in the NOAH-New Japan feud.
Also slated for the Sapporo show, IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion Tiger Mask will attempt his fourth title defense, taking on the Best of the Super Juniors Tournament winner Koji Kanemoto. After finally doing a way with arch rival Black Tiger, Tiger Mask will be able to move on, although the competition this time will be very stiff.
Masahiro Chono will be making his long-awaited return, and will be popping up in some six man tags later in the tournament, and has been hinting at competing in the G1 Climax Tournament in August.

The September touring dates have been announced. As is the usual, the company will have its big tour blow-off on the 27th at the Kobe World Hall. The big September show has customarily always been held there. Other big dates will include a stop at the Korakuen hall on the 13th and a Yuji Nagata produced show on the 12th, which will be booked and scheduled by Nagata himself. Nagata has already said Akebono will be included on the show.

New President to Be Announced
In the wake of company President Mitsuharu Misawa, its not only left the company without perhaps its biggest star, but its also left it without a company President. Misawa was responsible for much of the business end of things in NOAH, and of course its a huge void that needs to be filled.
Another interesting twist on things is that Misawa was largely the person responsible for selling the NOAH shows to local promoters. They were usually older, more wealthy and established promoters, but didn’t really follow wrestling like they used to. They would usually only pay real money to get Misawa and Kobashi on those local cards. When Kobashi went down with cancer, it got a heck of a lot more difficult to sell the shows, so not only did Misawa have to lower the cost of the shows for the arenas, he had to also put himself on the cards. While its probably true that Kobashi’s the bigger draw now, Misawa’s name is considered somewhat more important in terms of selling the shows.
There has been a lot of speculation as to whom will assume the role. Jun Akiyama appears to be the presumed front runner, but its a big question as to whether or not he’s willing to do that. Kenta Kobashi has shown absolutely zero interest in the spot, and would rather just wrestle. Mitsuo Momota, who is all but completely done in the ring, is the son of Rikidozan, and has been the VP of NOAH for a long time. He could certainly be another candidate. The announcement is scheduled to be made on July 5th, the day after Misawa’s tribute show at the Differ Ariake.
Tragic Southern Navigation Tour Winds Down
In a month that seemed to have no end for Pro Wrestling NOAH, it finally arrived on Sunday, as the company finally wrapped up the tour that resulted in the loss of their company’s President, Mitsuharu Misawa.
Attendance for the shows after Misawa’s death, were through the roof, although its not for the reasons NOAH would have liked it to have been. There is a new GHC Heavyweight Champion in Go Shiozaki, and Takashi Sugiura recently ventured to New Japan this past weekend, toppled its #1 up and coming star, while also laying down a challenge to IWGP Heavyweight Champion Hiroshi Tanahashi. The new foreign contingent of Bobby Fish & Chris Hero made a huge splash, and the company is said to be very interested in bringing them on board on more of a full-time basis.
All in all, outside of Misawa’s death, the tour was an absolutely smashing success from a business standpoint, although its hard for many in NOAH (understandably so) to get excited. Regardless, the last show in the Korakuen Hall, was an advance sell-out, and was said to have an absolutely molten crowd throughout. The Shiozaki/KENTA vs Nakajima/Sasaki match that main evented the show was said to be very good.

Summer Navigation Tour Dates Announced, Cards to be Released Later this Week
The next big tour for the company is its Summer Navigation tour, which will be headlined by the NTV Cup, which is NOAH’s equivalent of the Junior Tag League. The teams have been announced and can be viewed below. Eddie Edwards, Kikutaro, Bryan Danielson and Roderick Strong are all heading to the promotion for the tournament.

All Japan Pro Wrestling returned to the Korakuen Hall on Sunday, and opened the show with a long 10-bell salute to the late Mitsuharu Misawa, who in his prime was All Japan’s top star. Misawa would eventually become President before splitting off to form NOAH. Standing in the ring was All Japan President Keiji Mutoh, Kyohei Wada & Masanobu Fuchi. The entire locker room surrounded the ring to pay their respects to Misawa.
Keiji Mutoh and Taiyo Kea would meet in the semi-main event in a six man tag team match, and exchanged Misawa tribute spots. Mutoh hit the Emerald Frosion in the opening moments of the match, which received a huge reaction from fans. Kea returned the favor later in the match, whipping out the ever popular Tiger Driver ’91. While Kea and Mutoh were doing their best Misawa impressions, Suwama was busy trying to win the match, and accomplished that feat, pinning Triple Crown Champion Yoshihiro Takayama with a German Suplex. The win likely puts Suwama in line for a title shot soon.
The main event featured Nobutaka Araya’s final singles match, as he took on long time friend Satoshi Kojima. Araya dusted off the old moonsault and despite interference from nearly all the baby faces, Mutoh included, Araya couldn’t get the job done, and Kojima finished him off with a big Western Lariat.
MAZADA seems to be moving himself into position to challenge Junior Champion Kaz Hayashi for the Junior title, picking up a pinfall win in their match with a vertical-drop Dhoda drop that beat Phil Atlas. The title match is rumored to be scheduled for July 5th.
The Voodoo Towers have had some issues of late, and had a match at the show to more or less resolve their differences. Partners Joe Doering and ZODIAC (Aaron Aguilera) had a falling out after failing to capture the World Tag Team Championships. Doering defeated Zodiac with a Jack knife power bomb, and afterwards, TARU came out to the ring to calm things down. He said they had their match, and demanded the two reform their team and focus on making the Voodoo Murderers the #1 faction in all of Japan. The two apparently made up, but we’ll see.

OSAKA PRO Holds Ted Tanabe Tribute Show
Wrestlers from all over Japan showed up at the Move On Arena to pay their respects to the late Ted Tanabe, the famous Japanese wrestling official last Friday Night in Osaka. B&G founded Zeus was the mystery ?X? in the fourth match, but they ended up falling to the Rudo Army. Dragon Gate star CIMA showed up, but he too, found himself on the losing side of things, losing to Osaka Pro Champion Billyken Kid, Kuishinbo Kamen & Kanjyuro Matsuyama. The crowd chanted everyone’s name in the main event, as is par for the course, but they also let out a Tanabe chant as well.
As expected, it was a pretty emotional day for all involved. Wrestlers spoke after their respective matches in a tribute to Tanabe, and some teared up a bit while talking. All the wrestlers gathered in the ring for a group picture after the match.
