Hey guys, well this week we?re going to do something a little different! Finals are OFFICIALLY over for me and that means this school year is done, no summer classes this year! Well, now that finally gives me time to finally watch a lot of stuff that I?ve been putting off (including a lot of lucha stuff and CHIKARA’s King of Trios weekend, and some ROH). The first thing I did was track down the Lucha Libre Documentary that Mike Tenay did back in WCW in 1997. Now, I worked pretty hard on compiling all this together. I had to download all the Nitro’s that the segments aired on and then I split them from the video and I upped them along with some bonus matches from that time period and if you go to the WrestleView forum and check in the Puro/Lucha subforum, that’s where you will find them. Otherwise e-mail me and I will hook you up. Now, onto the column, AAA is in the midst of a tournament to crown the very first ever AAA Cruiserweight Champion. If I can get ALL the matches as they air I will review each and every match from the tournament, right now, I have the rankings match and every Quarterfinals match along with the first Semi-Finals match. I?m going to start this week with the Domed Cage Match that made up the rankings for the tournament and then I will review the first two quarterfinals matches and go from there. As time goes on, I may start doing this with other shows, possibly CHIKARA and CMLL as well. Now onto the news!

Guadalajara Still Holding Off From Allowing Lucha To Return
Though Lucha has started back elsewhere in Mexico, due to a few new serious cases of the Swine Flu in Guadalajara, they have canceled all the scheduled shows there for at least 2 more weeks and CMLL will hold off on returning until May 24.

CMLL

Averno Proposes Huge Match, Casas Not Interested
During his down time due to there being no lucha Averno has stated that he had a great idea for this years Anniversary Show where he, Mistico, and Negro Casas would face off in a Mask vs. Hair Triple Threat Match where the man who is pinned either loses his hair or his mask. He thinks that Mistico would be willing but isn’t so sure of Negro. He also said that he would welcome Dos Caras Jr. into Hijos del Averno if he wanted to join. Negro Casas spoke about the idea on Monday but said he would rather have a Hair vs. Hair Match with Blue Panther instead because of their similar career paths. He said that Averno and Mistico are too young and not worthy of that type of match yet, but may decided to do the Three Way anyway to humilate them.

AAA

Dr. Wagner Jr. Contract Controversy
Ever since Dr. Wagner Jr. debuted in AAA a few months ago (only a few weeks after saying he would not be signing to either AAA or CMLL) his contract situation has been a bit of a mystery. Wagner continues to work several INDY shows (including Perros del Mal shows) yet just last week Konnan said that Wagner was signed to a 1 year contract only to have Wagner say this week he was an Independent Contracter and had not signed a contract with AAA of any kind.

Joaquin Roldan Speaks About Dr. Wagner Jr. Contract Situation
Ah, the drama with Mr. Wagner continues this week. After Konnan initially said that Wagner had signed an exclusive 1 year contract (that pretty everyone knew was bull since Wagner was still appearing on INDY shows) and Wagner coming back a few days later and saying that it was untrue, now AAA President, Joaquin Roldand, has confirmed that Wagner as in fact NOT signed an exclusive deal with AAA as of yet. He does, however, say that they are still negotiating and are close to inking a deal with Wagner for a one year, exclusive contract. He says that they hope to have the deal done before TripleMania. As of right now Wanger is the #1 contender to the AAA Heavyweight Title and it was planned for him to face Mesias at TripleMania for the belt and possibly even make it Title vs. Title with Wagner’s UWA Title on the line as well. I understand that Wagner wants to be able to work the INDY scene as well but AAA obviously has big plans for the guy and if I was a betting man, I would put my bet on Wagner walking out of TripleMania a double champion so I don’t get why he is so unwilling to sign just a one year contract. After a year if you’re not happy just leave and do whatever you want. Either way I don’t think any of this should’ve been made public, this negotiation should be closed door, period.

Konnan Settles with TNA
The Wrestling Oberserver reported this week that Konnan had indeed settled his racial disrimination lawsuit with TNA Wrestling. They officially settled the issue back in March and both sides agreed to a confidientiality clause and neither side is allowed to make any type of negative comments about the other publiclly. None of the details of the settlement will be made public either. Let the Konnan returning to TNA rumors begin…..NOW!

Huge Match To Be Announced For TripleMania
At next Monday’s AAA TV Taping both Konnana nd Joaquin Roldan are scheduled to start picking their teams for the big AAA vs. La Legion Domed Cage Match set for TripleMania.

INDY & OTHER NEWS

First CHIKARA Wrestler Confirmed for Dragon Gate USA Debut
Dragon Gate USA announced this week that Fire Ant would be the first of 8 CHIKARA wrestlers (which will compete in an 8-man tag) announced for the debut DGUSA show. Also comfirmed for the show so far are Naruki Doi, CIMA, Dragon Kid, Masato Yoshino, Shingo Takagi, Yamato, Susumu Yokosuka, 2 Cold Scorpio, and The Young Bucks (Nick & Matt Jackson). The rest of the participants as well as the card will be announced in the coming weeks.

Amazing Red on Verge of Re-Signing with TNA Full Time
PWInsider reported this week that after Amazing Red showed TNA officials that he still had it (and impressing the hell out of those that hadn’t seen him yet) they are in the process of locking Red up in a contract. This is good news for TNA’s X-Division to say the least, as Red will bring a ton of great, fresh matchups to the division and he has really looked good in his return. I had my doubts of what he could still do after the serious knee injuries and the last time I had seen Red he looked like only a shell of his former self, but he seems to have rebounded niceley from the knee surgeries.

El Dandy on the Verge of Retirement?
Last week a very frustrated El Dandy vented his frustrations in an interview stating that he was ready to retire from wrestling completely due to the lack of respect he says promoters in Mexico have showed towards him. He said that promoters tell him that he no longer has a name in Mexico and refuse to pay him as a top star nor show him the respect that he feels (and rightfully so) that he has earned. He specifically called out IWRG and blasted them, saying that if any wrestler currently working for them asked for a raise they would be blacklisted from the promotion. Dandy said that he would not retire at least until he gets his NWA World Heavyweight Title shot against Blue Demon Jr. that was promised to him way last year. He went on to give NWA Mexico props saying that they are one of the few promotions as of late that have treated him with respect and he feels that his title match can be made. Is this just a frustrated man venting his frustrations or is Dandy truly ready to hang up the boots for good? I really hope not because I’ve always thought El Dandy was a great wrestler and hoped that he would get another run in CMLL or maybe come to AAA or even an American promotion like TNA.

WWE Still Plans to Hold Shows in Mexico This Month

He says that he wants to eventually have a large sized stable of wrestlers under his managment and that their prices are very affordable, but he doest no have any plans to start his own INDY promotion. He also said that he along with his brothers, AAA stars: Alan & Chris Stone, and their father El Bello Greco have opened their own training school.

LUCHA MATCH SPOTLIGHT OF THE WEEK:

AAA Cruiserweight Title Tournament Ranking Domed Cage Match:
Joe Lider vs. Super Fly vs. Escoria vs. Nicho el Millionario vs. Juventud Guerrera vs. Alex Koslov vs. Extreme Tiger vs. Alan Stone vs. Billy Boy vs. Jack Evans vs. Crazy Boy vs. Teddy Hart vs. Laredo Kid
AAA Lucha Libre on Galavision – 4/25/09

The rules to this match are pretty simple. This is the rankings match to set up the Tournament to crown the first ever AAA Cruiserweight Champmion, there are 12 spots in the tournament and the 13 men in this match. The first 12 men to escape the cage (by climbing through the hole in the domed cage at the top) are automatically entered into the tournament but the one man that doesn’t escape is left out of the tournament. The first man to escape the cage is ranked #1 in the tournament and he will face the man that is the last to escape and on, that’s how the seeding in the tourney is going to be decided.

Jack Evans and Joe Lider are the first two men in the cage (and these two guys have the most awesome theme music, “Lose Yourself” by Eminem for Hart Foundation and “1-8-7” for Lider). Every 2 minutes another man will enter the match. Jack Evans taunts Lider with the break dancing as the bell sounds but Lider is having none of that and he dropkicks Evans in the face. Lider attempts to whip Evans into the ropes but Evans counters with a big kick and then stands on Lider’s chest and hits a standing twisting shooting star press! Evans attempts to whip Lider into the ropes but he revereses it and then Lider goes for a hiptoss, but Evans lands on his feet.

Evans goes for a roundhouse kick but Lider ducks and then flips Evans over but he lands on his feet. Evans then hits a modified Pele kick! Evans with several leg kicks and then a spinning back kick. Evans comes off the ropes but Lider nails him with a front kick followed by a sitout pumphandle driver! The clock ticks down and the next man in the match is Alex Koslov! Lider puts the boots to Evans as Koslov enters the match and he and Lider begin to pick up the pace with several back flips and counters, but then Koslov does his usual STOP dance but Evans attempts to attack him only to eat a boot for his troubles.

Koslov then hits a big Enziguri on Lider and the clock ticks down once again as Koslov does the Russian dance and then throws Evans into the cage. The next man in is Jack Evans’ regular tag partner, Teddy Hart! Hart comes in and he and Alex Koslov trade right hands until Hart gets the advantage and hits the powerbomb into the backcracker over his knees! Hart then holds Koslov as Evans goes for a spinning enziguri but Koslov ducks and Evans hits Teddy! Koslov with a superkick on Evans right into the Hart Rate of Teddy! Lider kicks Koslov and then slaps Teddy and whips him into the corner. Teddy nips up and Lider catches him and drops him with a gutbuster.

Lider places Teddy up on the top rope and climbs up but Teddy hits him with a Swining Neckbreaker off the top! Extreme Tiger is the next man in and he comes in and hits Teddy with a Diamond Cutter but Evans then lights him with martial arts kicks, but Tiger flips him and then hits a kick of his own and then a Vertebreaker on Koslov! Tiger dropkicks Lider and then Hart jumps Tiger from behind. Hart and Tiger trade forearms and chops until Hart pokes him in the eyes and then the next man in, Laredo Kid, enters the match! Kid with a Brainbuster on Tiger and then a Vertebreaker on Hart! Lider attempts to punch Kid but he blocks it and locks him in a Boston Crab!

Hart breaks it up and hits several knee strikes followed by the Fliping Double Underhook Piledriver! The next man in is Billy Boy! Koslov with a Big Splash off the top on Evans. Hart attempts a front kick to Billy but he catches Hart’s leg and then backflips him but Hart lands on his feet and Billy turns Hart insideout with a lariat! Billy with a sitout powerbomb on Koslov and then a Yakuza Kick on Lider! Lider hits a Facebuster on Hart and then the next man in is Nicho! Nicho with a spinning heel kick on Tiger and then a swinging straight jacket driver on Evans! Hart picks Nicho up and sets him up on the top rope and then hits the Backcracker off the top!

Evans locks Lider in the Octapus! Brainbuster on Billy by Koslov and then Alan Stone enters the match! Stone with a lariat on Tiger and then a dropkick on Laredo Kid. Escoria hits a cross body on Laredo Kid and then a press slam into a kick to the face on Tiger! Stone then hits an elbow on Escoria and Billy Boy whips him into the ropes but Escoria springboard moonsaults and lands on his feet. Escoria climbs to the top and hits a Missile Dropkick on Billy!

Nicho climbs up to the top of the dome but Koslov stops him and climbs up and knocks Nicho off! The next man in is Crazy Boy! Crazy comes in and puts the boots to Teddy and then hits a Superkick. Lider with a tilt-a-whirl into a facebuster on Tiger and then Koslov hits a Superkick on Stone! Escoria hits a Senton Bomb on Nicho and the next man in is Super Fly! Stone puts the boots to Tiger and then hits a Scoop Slam. Laredo begins climbing up the cage again but Nicho hits a Spear off the top rope taking Laredo off the dome to the mat! Nicho climbs back up and crawls out through the hole and he is the 2nd ranked man in the tourney! Stone starts climbing the dome and finaly crawls out through the top! In the ring Tiger hits a 450-Splash on Escoria! Crazy Boy climbs through the top and in the ring Laredo Kid hits a DVD on Billy and then Escoria hits a split legged corkscrew moonsault on Tiger!

The man that escapes the cage is entered into the tournament, and the other man is eliminated from it. Evans starts to quickly climb the cage but Billy pulls him down. Billy climbs but Evans pulls HIM down. Evans offers his hand for a handshake but both kick each other! They then trade leg kicks and chops. Evans then climbs to the top of the cage but Billy swings Evans and drops him down into a Firemans Carry Slam. Billy then climbs up the cage and starts to climb out but Fabi Apache and Aerostar climbed up the outside of the cage and they knock Billy off! Evans realizes what just happened and quickly climbs up the cage and escapes through the top! Billy Boy has been screwed again! This means Billy won’t be apart of the tournament and Evans will be the last ranked man in it. After the match Evans celebrates on top of the cage while Billy can’t believe what just happened in the ring. He complains but that’s not going to do him any good.

Loser & Eliminated From The Tournament: Billy Boy

(Very fun match with tons of crazy action that has set the tone for this tournament nicely. It was very hard to follow as any match inside a cage with this many peole will. Everybody did well and in my opinion Laredo Kid was the standout performance, but they were all able to hit alot of good, inovative spots using the cage especially when hanging from it. ***1/2)
