Steve Austin reflects on WrestleMania 14, Says he told Vince “that match sucked”

Steve Austin

WWE has posted a new interview with Hall of Famer “Stone Cold” Steve Austin discussing the 20 year anniversary of the WrestleMania 14 main event.

The main event, which featured Austin challenging Shawn Michaels for the then-WWF Championship, featured Mike Tyson as the special guest enforcer.

Austin spoke in detail about the build up to the match and Vince McMahon approaching him about getting Tyson involved with the company and WrestleMania. He also addressed the situation involving questions about Michaels actually competing in the main event given, in Austin’s words, “he wasn’t really in a good place at that time.”

The match went on as scheduled and saw Austin defeat Michaels to capture his first WWF/WWE Championship. Austin noted that he wasn’t thrilled with the match and told Vince that he thought the “match sucked” upon reaching the backstage area. He revealed Vince said it was okay and all that matter was what to come storyline-wise afterwards.

That main event and 24 hours to follow would officially usher in a big part of the Attitude Era in the company, kicking off the incredibly popular feud between Austin and McMahon. While Austin may not have been thrilled with the match itself, he also talked about how many “outside eyeballs” including lots of mainstream media attention.
