Report: “Language of WWE” for international TV

According to a report by The Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE sent out an information sheet called “The Language of WWE” to those who announce the shows in other languages – something that English speaking WWE announcers were not given nor were told these words were “banned” despite the fact that they aren’t often used on television. The words “wrestling” and “wrestlers” were emphasized heavily as not to say during broadcasts in addition to the terms “catch” and “catchers” (a term that is still used overseas to describe wrestling terminology). Other words banned for international broadcasts include “sports”, “athletes”, “sportsmen”, “fighters”, “fight” and “fighting.” The company also asks the show to be labeled as entertainment or action soap opera and that talent should be referred to as Superstars or Divas.
