"Yes Sir...we've got a great main event!"
It's appropriate enough for this show, isn't it? Welcome to WWE Main Event! The opening package plays for Main Event, and we're definitely seeing the world through Diamond Eyes!
Michael Cole and The Miz are in the ring to welcome us to Tulsa, OK for the opening episode of WWE Main Event on ion Television. They run down the main event of the show, World Champion Sheamus vs. WWE Champion CM Punk.
A video package plays highlighting Punk as a martyr for change in the WWE. A great package, with comments from Michael Hayes, Joey Mercury and Paul Heyman, this video runs through the Summer of Punk '11.
Matt Striker is backstage with CM Punk and Paul Heyman requesting a comment about tonight's Main Event. Punk gives us the same rigmarole about respect and being the "Best in The World."
We are brought to Sheamus and Josh Mathews backstage. We are promised a boot down CM Punk's throat, courtesy of Sheamus.
We then take a look at Sheamus' World Championship win, and his subsequent rise to stardom. Chris Jericho says that Sheamus "is everything you'd want in a champion," and Daniel Bryan calls him "a complete entertainer."
Sheamus makes his way out to the ring. We go to commercial break as Sheamus vs. CM Punk opens up the show.
CM Punk makes his way out to the ring with Paul Heyman. Lillian Garcia gives us the Bruce Buffer intros for Punk and Sheamus. Champion vs. Champion, *FIRST TIME EVER*: WWE Champion CM Punk vs. World Heavyweight Champion Sheamus
Sheamus and Punk lock up, but not for too long, with Punk forcing the break at the ropes. We get a second lock up, and along with it comes with some headlock trading. Punk tries for a whip off the ropes, and Sheamus counters. Sheamus covers for the one. Punk successfully whips Sheamus, but pays for it with a shoulder block, and we get another pinfall for 1.
Punk takes control, stomping Sheamus out in the corner. Sheamus counters with a boot to a running Punk, and sets up for the Battering Ram from the top, but Punk shoves him out of the ring, and we go to commercial!
We come back to Punk mocking Sheamus's rope spot, but Sheamus counters with a hangman. Punk regains control and dominates Sheamus, while working out the shoulder. Sheamus gets busted open on the bridge of the nose. Punk hits a neckbreaker and gets a 2 count for his trouble. Sheamus counters a sleeper, Punk counters with a kick to the face, Sheamus follows up with Polish Hammers, the Triple H Knee and the running powerslam. Sheamus goes for the chest pound, and Punk counters with a high roundhouse kick to the head, getting another two count as we go to commercial.
Sheamus is outside clutching his forearm on the outside, while Punk gloats in the ring. Punk goes for the dive, but Sheamus counters with a forearm and the Battering Ram for another two count. Sheamus calls for the Brogue, but Punk runs away, ripping off the padding in the process. Sheamus hits the clubs to the chest, hits White Noise and gets a two count for his trouble. Sheamus with knees to the spine of Punk, setting up the Texas Cloverleaf, but Punk takes advantage with the running knee/clothesline combo. Punk hits the Macho Elbow for another two count.
Punk calls for the Go To Sleep, Sheamus counters into the Texas Cloverleaf! Punk writhes in pain, as he attempts to break the hold, and the break is successful. Punk realizes that the center turnbuckle is exposed, uses shoulders to the gut to create separation, but gets an Irish Curse for his trouble. Sheamus goes for the Brogue Kick, trips Sheamus into the exposed buckle, and grabs the tights for the 3 count. Winner: WWE Champion CM Punk (12:00)
Matt Striker is in the ring with a slightly bloodied Sheamus. Sheamus proceeds to chew up Punk for his actions in the ring, promising retribution towards CM Punk.
Coming up on the other side of the break? Comments from CM Punk.
Josh Mathews is backstage with CM Punk. More respect rigmarole. However, this beratement comes from Paul Heyman, who proceeds to sing Punk's praises. And yes...Paul Heyman called Punk a "first ballot" hall of famer. Next Week on Main Event: Randy Orton vs. The Big Show
Big Show threatens to knockout Randy Orton next week. WWE Tag Team Championship Tournament First Round: "Long Island Iced Z" Zack Ryder and Santino Marella vs. Justin Gabriel and Tyson Kidd
Santino and Justin Gabriel start the match. They have a little fun exchange, and Santino tags in Zack Ryder. Ryder hits a flapjack and gets a two count. Gabriel tags in to Kidd, and gets a two count off of the Double Team. Kidd tags in Gabriel, one count to Ryder. Kidd tags himself in, hits a springboard splash and pins Ryder, only to have Santino save the match. Zack sets up for the Broski Boot, tags in Santino and hits the boot. Ryder then takes out Gabriel on the outside, allowing Santino to hit the Cobra for the victory. Santino and Ryder advance to the semi-finals! Winners: Santino Marella and Zack Ryder (4:02)
They advance to the semis against The Rhodes Scholars as we go to credits.
Navigator's Quick Thoughts:
- The Miz will have to grow on me as a commentator. However, Miz was quite the fun guy on commentary with Cole. Cole playing the babyface role was pretty refreshing, but it sounds like Miz is trying HARD to be JBL.
- The Punk and Sheamus packages were exceptionally well done. My personal appetite was whet for the match with these packages. It did a good job setting up the two competitors to those who probably viewed this show for the first time. Speaking of the match...
- Sheamus was a wonderful babyface in peril (BFIP) in this match. Punk played the heel role quite effectively, and the finish played well into Punk's quest for respect. The pacing was well done, despite the amount of commercials during the match, not that they took away from the match.
- Sheamus got busted open.
- Paul Heyman is good on the mic.
- We get Orton vs. Big Show next week.
- So...the Rhodes Scholars are winning their semi-final match. But Zack and Santino have to be the most fun tag team since R-Truth and Kofi Kingston. I certainly enjoyed Santino and Ryder's chemistry, however, Kidd and Gabriel were extremely spotty in this match, quite serviceable in this type of short match.
