AAA strips Alberto Del Rio of title due to WWE commitments

AAA president Dorian Roldan appeared on SirusXM’s “Busted Open Radio” show on Monday and announced that AAA has officially stripped current AAA Mega Heavyweight Champion Alberto El Patron of the championship. Patron, aka Alberto del Rio, left AAA last month and immediately defeated John Cena for the WWE United States Championship upon his return.

Originally it was believed that Del Rio would return to AAA for at least one appearance to either vacate the title or drop the belt in the ring, but as WWE as announced Alberto for several live appearances that conflict with AAA TV tapings or PPV events, that seemed less and less likely as time went on. Dorian confirmed on the radio that AAA originally believed Alberto would make two of his previously booked events with the company and that he was even willing to drop the title, but the WWE put a stop to it.

Dorian also revealed that AAA would crown a new Mega Heavyweight Champion at December’s big “Guerra de Titanes” event in a one-night tournament. No names for the tournament, nor how big it will be, have been announced.
