Smackdown Recap – 6/11/10

WWE Smackdown
June 11, 2010
Tampa, FL
Report by: Mike Tedesco of Wrestleview.com

“Yes, sir, we promised you a great main event…” The WWE video leads us into the show.

A video recaps the previous episode of Smackdown. The show began with the Undertaker’s “funeral” presided over by Kane. Kane cut a tremendous promo about bringing those who put Undertaker in a vegetative state to justice. Kane screamed that there will be vengeance. If you haven’t seen the video yet I suggest you find it and watch it. Since Undertaker was taken out his spot was vacated in the Fatal Four Way. They show highlights of the Battle Royal held at the end of the night, which Rey Mysterio won by eliminating Kane.

The Smackdown video plays and we’re brought into the arena with some pyro. I think it’s underappreciated just how tremendous those pyro displays are each week. Todd Grisham and Matt Striker welcome us to the show. Tonight Big Show will take on CM Punk. Then Rey Mysterio will take on World Heavyweight Champion Jack Swagger… and that match is right now!

Rey Mysterio’s music hits and he comes out to the ring. Mysterio said that he got a second chance last week and he did what he does best: the impossible. He won the Smackdown Battle Royal and won a spot in the Fatal Four Way match for the World Heavyweight Championship. When he wins the World Heavyweight Championship it won’t just be his world title. It’ll be OUR world title. Mysterio speaks a little Spanish but Jack Swagger’s music hits and he makes his way to the ring.

Jack Swagger says Mysterio didn’t earn anything and he never has. He just capitalized on the misfortune of others, namely the Undertaker. While Mysterio was in Tijuana drinking cervezas he was in Oklahoma winning and perfecting the art of wrestling. Swagger did countless drills because he knew one day he was going to be destined for the World Heavyweight Championship. Mysterio says he thinks all that higher education went to waste because everything Swagger just said was stupid. Mysterio then makes fun of his lisp by imitating Sylvester the Cat. Mysterio says he’s proud of his heritage and representing the 619. All it would take for him to take that world championship (Swagger says a miracle) is one 619!

CM Punk makes his way to the ring with his mask on due to having his head shaved by Rey Mysterio. Punk says they got Malcolm X and JFK so it was only a matter of time before he had an assassination attempt. Last Monday he and the S.E.S. were targeted by armed assassins. A lesser man wouldn’t be here tonight let alone be able to walk but here he is. He’s not a normal man while the two in the ring are. Punk is extraordinary. He’s the only Straight Edge three-time World Heavyweight Champion in WWE history and the only thing more powerful than that is being a four-time Straight Edge World Heavyweight Champion. Punk says he’ll become a four-time champion at Fatal Four Way. The world will finally have a champion to look up to and believe in.

Mysterio says his ears must want to crawl right out of his head because the WWE Universe, as well as him, is tired of him running his mouth. What does that have to do with Punk’s ears? Mysterio already beat him and shaved his head. It’s time for him to show a little dignity and represent his S.E.S. by pulling off the silly mask he has on. It’s time to show the entire WWE Universe what he looks like bald. Punk says that’s the pot calling the kettle black. Punk says he’s not bald: Mysterio is.

Big Show’s music hits and he comes out to join his three opponents at Fatal Four Way. Big Show says he’s here to take care of business. He’ll walk into Fatal Four Way, probably beat them up, and leave with the World Heavyweight Championship. Big Show says he has “mad” respect for Mysterio and he represents the 619. He has a big butt so he needs a few area codes to represent him. Swagger has his issues. Big Show says he doesn’t understand Punk. He pulls off bald pretty well so he’ll do Punk a favor tonight and pull the mask off. Punk says he won’t pull anything off. He won’t pull of a win at Fatal Four Way or tonight.

All of a sudden the arena turns red. Kane is on the big screen and says as he looks at the four souls in the ring he can’t help but wonder who is responsible for his brother’s demise. If they think that they will vie for the Undertaker’s Holy Grail without fear of reprisal then they are mistaken. If he finds out who’s responsible the guilty party will wind up in this: a casket. Maybe it wasn’t one person. Maybe it was two people bound together in a diabolical plot. Maybe it was all four of them because no one man could be responsible for his brother’s demise. No matter what THERE WILL BE VENGEANCE! Kane slams down the casket and breaths heavily as we fade to black.

Rey Mysterio vs. Jack Swagger

They circle the ring and Swagger takes him down quickly with a front face lock. Mysterio gets through the ropes and gets out of it. Mysterio takes a breather outside and gets back in. They lock up and Swagger executes a nice takedown. Swagger keeps him grounded with a reverse bear hug. Swagger goes for a German Suplex but Mysterio counters into a wheelbarrow arm drag. Swagger charges into a drop-toe-hold, sending him face first into the turnbuckle. Swagger angrily charges but Mysterio ducks and pulls down the top rope, sending him out of the ring.

Swagger collects himself on the outside before calmly getting into the ring. Swagger kicks him and clubs him down. Swagger puts him in the corner and bashes his face in there. Swagger chokes him with the knee and stomps a mud hole. Swagger sends him to the ropes but lowers his head and eats a kick. Mysterio hits a nice wheelbarrow bulldog for a near fall. Mysterio gets on the apron and hits a BEAUTIFUL springboard hurricanrana, putting him in position. Mysterio hits the 619 and a springboard splash but Swagger gets his foot on the rope! Mysterio can’t believe it as we go to commercial!

-Commercial Break-

We come back from the break to see Swagger push Mysterio into the ropes and throw him out of the ring, making Mysterio land on his chest! I don’t know how you could fake that. During the commercial break Mysterio hit a running seated senton off the apron to the floor. Swagger goes outside and bounces Mysterio off the apron. Swagger clubs him and puts him back in the ring.

Swagger stands on Mysterio’s injured chest and whips him hard into the corner. Swagger applies a chin lock and a body scissors. Swagger soon releases it and concentrates solely on the body scissors. Swagger grinds Mysterio’s face into the mat and gets off. Mysterio angrily fights back, goes into the ropes, slides under the legs, and gets his head taken off by a clothesline for a near fall. Swagger punches him down into the corner and puts him on the top rope. Swagger gets on the second rope and goes for a superplex but Mysterio pushes him off. Mysterio gets ready for a move but Swagger climbs up out of nowhere and hits a belly to belly off the top rope! Swagger covers for a near fall!

-Commercial Break-

We come back from the break to see Swagger bending Mysterio around the ring post and pulling back. Swagger releases before he’s disqualified and Mysterio collapses on the outside. Swagger puts him in the ring and covers for a near fall. Swagger applies another body scissors and really wants the submission. Mysterio sits in it for a bit before punching his thighs and getting out. Swagger pushes him into the corner and charges into the boots. Swagger charges for the same result. Swagger hasn’t had enough and charges, this time into nothing. Mysterio springboards to the top and Swagger gets him in the tree of woe. Swagger charges and Mysterio sits up, sending Swagger shoulder first into the ring post!

Mysterio comes off the top rope with a seated senton. Mysterio ducks a clothesline and eats a big boot for a near fall. Swagger clubs him and taunts the crowd. Swagger goes for the Gutwrench Powerbomb but Mysterio flips through to his feet and hits a head-scissors, putting Swagger against the ropes. Mysterio hits a 619 to the ribs, a springboard dropkick into position, hits ANOTHER 619, a springboard leg drop, and he picks up the win!

Winner by Pinfall: Rey Mysterio
Match Rating: ** 3/4

Swagger attacks Mysterio after the match when Kane’s pyro hits. The Big Red Machine comes to the ring as Swagger throws Mysterio into the corner shoulder first. Kane Chokeslams Swagger and then gives Mysterio a Chokeslam! No one is safe when Kane doesn’t have any suspects.

They mention that we’ll see footage from the end of Raw later tonight.

Did you know WWE Mobile content is available in 52 countries on over 100 operators worldwide, representing over 1.2 billion subscribers? Yeah, but how many of those 1.2 billion people are subscribed to WWE Mobile? Sometimes I hate these “did you know” facts.

Lay-Cool make their way to the ring with Kaval in tow. Low-Ki deserves better. They force Kaval to hold their Women’s Championships and, oh crap, they have microphones. They say “ew” and talk about how they’re going to throw up. There is ZERO heat. McCool says her parents are out in the crowd. They talk about makeovers and crap. I’d be so embarrassed to perform like this in front of my parents. There was nothing but fake heat in this.

Layla vs. Tiffany

Tiffany starts off with forearms. Tiffany goes to the top rope but Layla knocks her off and pins for a near fall. Layla applies a head-scissors and is looking for a submission. Layla grabs the bottom rope like that will give her leverage and is forced to break the hold. Tiffany slaps, hits an atomic drop, a clotheslines, and some slams. Tiffany goes for the 10 punches but gets pushed off and takes an awkward fall. Tiffany gets an inside cradle for a near fall. McCool is knocked off the apron and Layla hits the Lay Out for the win.

Winner by Pinfall: Layla
Match Rating: N/A

The entire attack by the NXT Season One rookies on Raw will be shown next.

-Commercial Break-

The announcers put over the shocking attack by the NXT rookies from Raw. We then see the entire video. If you haven’t seen it then you better look it up now. If you’re a wrestling fan this is one of those “got to see for yourself” moments.

Matt Striker, a victim on Monday, says that the locker room is clamoring with every noise. It’s put the entire WWE on notice and will pick up the intensity in the matches. If someone wants to challenge them then bring it on.

-Commercial Break-

The WWE Rewind is Dolph Ziggler attacking Christian on the Peep Show three weeks ago. He and Chavo Guerrero double teamed him for making fun of Vickie.

As Christian makes his way to the ring we see footage from last week’s edition of Superstars. Christian was defeated by Dolph Ziggler and Chavo Guerrero on that show. EXCUSE ME! Vickie Guerrero comes out with black hair. It’s her pleasure to introduce the future of WWE (EXCUSE ME!) and a man who is so mesmerizing in many ways, Dolph Ziggler.

Christian vs. Dolph Ziggler

The Goose has this match. Ziggler quickly bolts from the ring, prompting Christian to chase. Ziggler gets in the ring and clubs Christian coming in. Christian ducks a right hand and slaps the taste out of his mouth. Christian then catapults him over the top rope. Christian hits a springboard cross-body to the outside and throws him in the ring. Christian goes to the top rope and Ziggler pushes him off to the outside as we go to the top rope.

-Commercial Break-

We come back from the break to see Ziggler choke Christian on the ropes and then vault over, snapping the neck off the top rope. Ziggler covers for a near fall. Ziggler punches him in the face a few times and covers again for a near fall. Ziggler hits a rolling neck snapper and gets on the second rope. Ziggler jumps face first into Christian’s boots.

Christian comes back with some right hands and a running forearm. Christian jumps over Ziggler and hits a missile dropkick for a near fall. Christian puts him on the second rope but Ziggler puts him on the apron. Christian slaps and hits a top rope cross-body but Ziggler rolls through for a near fall. Vickie looked concerned for a moment. Ziggler hits a head-scissors bulldog for a near fall. Ziggler puts him in the corner but gets hit with a pendulum kick. Christian hits a flying back elbow and goes for the Kill Switch but Ziggler gets the sleeper hold on. Christian runs him face first into the corner and hits a springboard sunset flip for the win.

Winner by Pinfall: Christian
Match Rating: * 1/2

Immediately after the match Curt Hawkins and Vance Archer attack Christian. Archer hits the reverse DDT and Hawkins hits the top rope elbow. Their contracts expire at midnight tonight so that statement has been made. Whatever… Once they leave Ziggler locks the Sleeper Hold on and puts Christian to sleep. Vickie Guerrero raises his arm.

Kane puts black flowers on the coffin and says he will never allow the fire extinguish. Kane says all his life he’s felt him in his soul, guiding him on the stairway to success. Now he’s gone and his soul is empty and hollow. His soul is tortured but so will be the culprits, the assailants. Those men are damned by every fiber of his monstrous being. They’re damned to vengeance. They are damned to hell.

-Commercial Break-

Big Show and CM Punk will face each other later tonight. This is a “first time ever” situation.

Drew McIntyre makes his way to the ring looking none too pleased. McIntyre calls Teddy Long and tells him to come to the ring right now. Long doesn’t oblige so McIntyre slams his jacket down. McIntyre tells him not to make him repeat himself and then does anyway. Teddy Long comes out to the ring fearless. Long gets in the ring and immediately chokes McIntyre out! Just kidding.

McIntyre says that Long will speak when he tells him to speak. McIntyre shows footage of Matt Hardy distracting him enough to lose to Kofi Kingston. Hardy gave him a Twist of Fate after the match despite being suspended. Matt Striker says that Matt Hardy should be charged for assault. Why? His brother already has more charges than a credit card.

McIntyre says as if that wasn’t disrespect enough then he should look at what happened on Monday Night Raw. Matt Hardy was picked to face him since he was suspended from Smackdown and not Raw. Matt Hardy beat the crap out of McIntyre and pinned him for the win.

Long starts to talk and McIntyre says he can’t talk to him. When it comes to “Viewer’s Choice,” he is the only choice because he is the chosen one. Long doesn’t get it and that’s where the problem lies. Once again he’ll do his job for him. As of right now, per Mr. Vincent Kennedy McMahon, not only is Matt Hardy suspended from Friday Night Smackdown but he’s suspended from Raw and all WWE programming. Long starts to talk and McIntyre rips the microphone out of his hand. McIntyre told him that there would be consequences for turning a blind eye to his misfortunes. McIntyre tells him to get a good look at his face because he has some news.

Kofi Kingston’s music hits and he makes his way to the stage. Kingston says he’s so sick and tired of listening to him week in and week out, whining and complaining, throwing tantrums. He’s sick of it, the people in the arena are tired of it, the candy men are sick of it. We’re all sick of McIntyre. Amen, brother. On behalf of the entire WWE Universe he’s asking, no, telling, him to shut up. Kingston says they are exact opposites. When he falls down he picks himself up like a man. When he wants something like the Intercontinental Championship he earns it like a man. When he doesn’t like someone like McIntyre, he does something about it, like this. Kingston punches McIntyre and they brawl around the ring. Kingston hits Trouble in Paradise and the crowd goes crazy as McIntyre lays at ringside!

Big Show is walking backstage. He’ll be in action against CM Punk next.

-Commercial Break-

Did you know that WWE programs are… oh who cares?

Teddy Long is backstage demanding to speak with Mr. McMahon. McIntyre comes in and throws the cell phone away. McIntyre says he warned him but he never listened. Next week he’ll have a match… against Teddy Long! If Long doesn’t show up then he’s fired.

Big Show vs. CM Punk

The bell rings and Big Show takes his time before approaching Punk. Punk tries to punch but Big Show pushes him away. Punk circles him and tries some kicks but they don’t hurt him. Punk puts himself through the ropes and keeps away. Punk hits a few strong kicks that do hurt the big guy and goes up top. Big Show dares him to jump off as he clenches his fist. Punk gets out of the ring and consults the S.E.S. as we go to commercial.

-Commercial Break-

We come back from the break to see Punk get chopped over the top rope by Big Show. Punk gets up in the corner and Big Show hits some body shots. Big Show crushes him with his butt and chops his chest hard. Big Show punches him in the corner again and turns him around, chopping his back. That’s nasty! Big Show raises the hand and goes for a Chokeslam but Big Show instead taunts taking the mask off. The entire S.E.S. charges the ring, including the masked man, and they attack Big Show.

Winner by Disqualification: Big Show
Match Rating: *

They S.E.S. hold him up as Punk kicks him in the head. Serena kicks him in the ribs and Kane’s pyro hits. Kane slowly makes his way to the ring. The S.E.S. is ready for him. Kane gets in and Chokeslams the masked man. Luke Gallows then walks into a Chokeslam. Kane looks over to the Big Show and appears to be sizing him up. Big Show turns and takes a Chokeslam from Kane! Kane looks over to CM Punk who is at the top of the stage with Serena. Kane explodes the turnbuckles as the show ends.

Mike’s Thoughts

Ah I love the summer time. School is out, the weather is great, and Smackdown always heats up around this time. In my two years doing this for Wrestleview.com (this edition of Smackdown is my 2 year anniversary, thank you very much) I’ve noticed that Smackdown is hot from the Summer through Winter before cooling off around WrestleMania. It seems every year that Smackdown is set aside to make Raw the main focus going into WrestleMania. Once late spring, early summer hits the show heats up again. Well we’re really heating up.

I absolutely love this storyline surrounding who took Undertaker out. Even though its only two weeks in he’s been superb. I haven’t seen Kane this good since he feuded with the Undertaker leading into WrestleMania 2004. Is that a sign? I liked that he took everyone tonight because it puts uncertainty into whether he’ll do that again at Fatal Four Way. Kane is really interesting. Speaking of Fatal Four Way… is there any other matches booked?

I really enjoyed the opening bout of the evening. Jack Swagger and Rey Mysterio put on an excellent showing. Those two can really go and it was fun to watch them go at it. I’d like to see this feud in the future.

I was hoping to see something with the NXT guys on Smackdown tonight but I guess that’s Raw only. Maybe they’re only targeting John Cena. Anyway, I’m looking forward to watching how Drew McIntyre vs. Teddy Long plays out next week. It’s the go home to Fatal Four Way. I’m looking forward to it.

Final Rating: ** 3/4
