“WWE: Then. Now. Forever.”

We get a video package hyping the NXT Tag Team Championship between #DIY and The Revival for tonight, before the NXT intro brings us to the crowd in Full Sail University as we return to Orlando for NXT! We’re welcomed by the commentary team of Corey Graves, Tom Phillips, and Percy Watson. We go to earlier today, where Asuka was attacked by Billie Kay and Peyton Royce. Back at ringside, Billie Kay and Peyton Royce make their way to the ring

Billie Kay & Peyton Royce vs. Sarah Bridges & Macy Evans

Macy and Peyton start things off as the crowd chants “ASUKA’S GONNA KILL YOU” and Peyton distracts Macy enough for Billie to attack. Tag to Peyton as Billie whips Macy right into a spinning heel kick from Peyton. Peyton continues the attack on Macy before tagging in Billie, who goes to work with a fist and a headbutt before tagging in Peyton. They try the kick combo again, but Macy ducks and gets the tag to Sarah! Sarah picks up steam before getting a nearfall on Billie as Peyton gets involved. Peyton knocks Macy off the apron and keeps the ref distracted as Billie rakes the eyes of Sarah. Tag to Peyton, who gets a knee to Sarah’s face for the win!

Winners via pinfall: Billie Kay & Peyton Royce

Billie and Peyton celebrate as we get a replay of what happened, and Billie and Peyton have microphones now. The crowd chants “ASUKA’S GONNA KILL YOU” as Peyton brags about what happened to Asuka, asking if they’re enough competition for her. Billie says she learned the hard way that they are the most dominant force in the Women’s division, and Peyton says the Women’s Championship belongs to her and Billie. Asuka comes out to the ring, being held back by officials before she runs in to get her revenge. Billie and Peyton work the numbers game until Nikki Cross comes out to make the save! She runs Peyton and Billie out, but quickly turns her attention to Asuka! Commentary hype the NXT Tag Team Championship match in our main event. Later tonight, Shinsuke Nakamura is interviewed about his opponent for Takeover: Toronto, Bobby Roode!

Alex’s Thoughts: The opening match served its purpose. I like matches like this, as they often give a small spotlight to the trainees or at the Performance Center while making sure the NXT Superstars shine. The situation with the Women’s Championship quickly picked up steam, and I love the idea of Nikki Cross getting into the mix as she establishes she has more in mind than just hanging around with SAnitY.

We thank Starlet for “Monster,” one of the official theme songs for NXT Takeover: San Antonio. Commentary talks about moments ago, when Nikki Cross saved Asuka from a double team by Billie Kay and Peyton Royce only to attack the Women’s Champion herself! During the break, Asuka freaked out over being attacked by all three of the other women. Backstage, we catch up with SAnitY, as Nikki Cross declares she’s gonna TAKE the NXT Women’s Championship. Eric Young says this is what they meant about taking, that it starts with this. As they walk off, we see Damo watching intently. Back at ringside, Elias Samson sings the NXT crowd a tune about “finding a man who lost his way.” The crowd chants “YOU CAN’T SING” as Samson comes to the ring for the next match. Already in the ring is his opponent, Jonathan Crews.

Elias Samson vs. Jonathan Crews

The crowd chants “DRIFT AWAY” as Samson drives Crews into the corner. The ref admonishes him before Samson wrenches the arm of Crews, following with a shoulder block into the young man. Crews surprises Samson with a rollup for a nearfall, followed by another, and a headscissors takedown before being taken down hard by the Drifter. Samson has Crews back in the corner, launching him shoulder first! He follows by stretching Crews across the steel post, and driving his hand into the canvas! A knee to the head of Crews sends the young man rolling back into the ring as Samson gets back in. Crews tries to fight back with some right hands, but is brought down hard with a boot by Samson. Samson sets up Crews, hitting a rolling neckbreaker for the win!

Winner via pinfall: Elias Samson

We get replays from the match as Samson celebrates in the ring. Commentary takes us back to NXT Takeover: Brooklyn from last year as The Revival defended the NXT Tag Team Championships against #DIY. We get highlights of the match, which ended with Revival retaining.

Alex’s Thoughts: Another decent match to give Samson a place to shine, with some good offense from Crews before the inevitable conclusion. I’m hopeful they’ll do more with Samson this year, but that might just be me…

Back at ringside, Andrade “Cien” Almas makes his way to the ring for the next match. Out next is Oney Lorcan as we go back to two weeks ago during their match in Osaka. Back at ringside, this match is underway!

Andrade “Cien” Almas vs. Oney Lorcan

Crowd is clearly behind Lorcan as bot men lock up, and Almas with a headlock before Lorcan shoves him away. Almas lays on the mat, messing wit Lorcan before he gets back up and slaps him! Lorcan throws him into the ropes, but Almas poses on the ropes before leaving the ring. Lorcan dives with a Blockbuster on Almas, slapping him on the throat before throwing him back into the ring for a nearfall. Almas picks things up now, and with Lorcan in the corner Almas charges at him before stopping to yell at him and slaps him in the face! Almas goes for a neckbreaker but Lorcan gets out. Lorcan charges at Almas, who hits a dropkick for a nearfall…and as Lorcan kicks out he falls right into a Fujiwara armbar by Almas! Lorcan rolls through as Almas holds on before they exchange forearms. Lorcan goes for that inverted exploder, but Almas stops him. Lorcan picks up steam again but gets taken down HARD by Almas. Lorcan drops Almas with a Northern Lights Suplex before charging for a running Blockbuster, but Almas ducks out of the way and starts hitting him hard with some elbows. Almas looking for a powerbomb but Lorcan reverses into an Alabama slam into the turnbuckle! Almas is up on the ropes as the ref stops Lorcan, allowing Almas to hit a dropkick to the knee followed by the Hammerlock DDT for the win!

Winner via pinfall: Andrade “Cien” Almas

We get replays of the match as Almas celebrates in the ring. He’s interviewed about what to expect from him in 2017, and he responds in Spanish before telling the crowd to shut up. He says in English this is his year, no more mistakes. He tells the crowd to shut up again before leaving. Commentary talks about WWE.com’s Top 25 Matches of 2016, and the #1 match being the rematch between The Revival and #DIY at Takeover: Toronto in a 2 Out of 3 Falls Match. We get highlights of the match, which saw #DIY finally defeat The Revival to win the NXT Tag Team Championships! Tom Phillips talks about interviewing Shinsuke Nakamura, and that interview us up next!

Alex’s Thoughts: Really enjoyed this match, especially after catching their previous encounter in Osaka a couple weeks ago. Really good work from two pre-WWE standouts that will hopefully shine even more in 2017!

We thank Ghost for their song “Square Hammer,” another theme song for Takeover: San Antonio!

We go to earlier today, where Tom Phillips is with Shinsuke Nakamura. Tom congratulates Nakamura on his victories in Osaka and Melbourne. Nakamura notes that those matches were tough, and he’s proud to be NXT Champion. Tom asks for Nakamura’s opinion on the new #1 contender Bobby Roode, whom Nakamura says one of the best wrestlers in the world, looks nice and dresses well, but the champ claims Bobby is not tough or ready to be NXT Champion. Tom says he tried to get a word from Roode, and while he couldn’t get him on screen to say anything Bobby did have this to give to Nakamura…and proceeds to hand Nakamura a ticket from Takeover: Dallas. Nakamura looks at it in confusion, as commentary speculates what it means while hyping a contract signing between the champ and challenger next week on NXT.

Alex’s Thoughts: I liked this interview for keeping it fairly simple: addressing the feud with Joe, and moving forward to Bobby Roode. I absolutely LOVE the use of the ticket, a callback to Nakamura’s debut last year and Bobby Roode’s implication of keeping his eye on the champ this whole time. This should be a really fun match come Takeover!

Back at ringside, The Revival make their way to the ring for the rematch from Takeover: Toronto. Out next are the Tag Team Champions, as #DIY make their way to the ring. We get ring introductions for the challengers and champions, and this main event is underway!

Main Event – NXT Tag Team Championship: #DIY (Johnny Gargano & Tommasso Ciampa) vs. The Revival (Scott Dawson & Dash Wilder)

Gargano and Dawson start things off with a lockup as Dawson gets Gargano into the corner. Gargano picking up steam before hitting Dawson with an inverted atomic drop and tagging in Ciampa. Dash gets involved, but both of Revival get cleared out of the ring by #DIY!

Back from break, Gargano is in control of Dawson before being taken to the corner. Gargano evades Dawson and lifts him up, but Dawson tags in Dash on the way up. Gargano clears out Dawson, but Dash takes control with a chop block on Gargano. Tag back to Dawson, who works the leg of Gargano before tagging Dash back in. Dash drives the leg of Gargano into the steel post before getting back in the ring, distracting the ref enough for Dawson to attack Gargano. Dash brings Gargano back into the ring before tagging in Dawson, who continues the assault on Gargano’s leg. Dawson gets Gargano in the tree of woe, and Revival double team him in the corner before the ref breaks it up. Gargano fights back, getting Dawson in an inside cradle…but Dash distracts the ref, which results in Gargano only getting a nearfall! Dawson brings Gargano out of the ring as the ref begins to count, and Dash is tagged in to continue on Gargano…who drives Dash into the steel post! Gargano struggles to get to the tag as Dash gets back in, tagging in Dawson. Dawson stops the tag, and kicks Ciampa to cause a distraction that leads to a double team and a nearfall!

Back from break, Dawson is fully in control as he tweaks a half crab on Gargano. Gargano gets to the rope, breaking the hold as Dawson makes the tag to Dash. Dash continues to stop Gargano from a tag as he tags Dawson back in, but Gargano crawls under to make the hot tag to Ciampa! Ciampa is a man possessed as he fires up on both of The Revival, with knees to the face of Dash in particular. He hits a knee on Dawson, but only gets a nearfall. Dawson hits a clothesline on Ciampa, but Revival try to double team Ciampa, but Gargano hits a superkick that takes Dash into an armbar by Ciampa! Gargano intercepts Dawson, who shoves him onto the hold to break it up. Tag to Dawson, but Gargano gets a blind tag and takes Dawson down with a kick!Chaos in the ring leads to Shatter Machine being stopped, and Gargano only gets a nearfall. Crowd chanting “THIS IS AWESOME” as Dawson is cleared out of the ring. Ciampa opens the rings for Gargano, who hits a dive on Dawson before Ciampa does the same to Dash. Gargano gets Dawson back in the ring before tagging in Ciampa, who is distracted by Dash before Dawson goes for a slingshot suplex…but Ciampa gets out, only to take a big DDT by Dawson for a nearfall. Chants of “PSYCHO KILLER” as Ciampa gives Dawson a knee to he face, while Gargano hits an enziguri on Dash. Revival in the middle of the ring as DIY deliver kicks to the head for a double pin and the win!

Winners via pinfall and still NXT Tag Team Champions: #DIY

The ref presents the titles to the champions as we get replays of the match. The champions celebrate in the ring until Paul Alluring cosmos out to the stage, distracting the champs as the Authors of Pain blindside them in the ring! Super Collider and powerbombs in stereo on the champ as the Authors of Pain pose in the ring with the titles before leaving as we look back at what just happened.

Alex’s Thoughts: Another great match between these two teams, simply put. It’s been a lot of fun seeing Gargano and Ciampa be so successful in NXT, really showing what those who have followed them on the indies already knew. The attack by AOP sets up a feud between them pretty nicely.

Backstage, William Regal is standing by with a special announcement: at NXT Takeover: San Antonio, the Authors of Pain challenge #DIY for the NXT Tag Team Championships. He also announces that next week on NXT, there will be a contract signing between Bobby Roode and Shinsuke Nakamura . Suddenly, Asuka bursts into the office demanding Regal makes the Women’s Championship match at NXT Takeover, to which Regal responds “Against who?” Asuka merely screams “All of them!” as the show comes to a close.

Alex’s Overall Thoughts: Setting up a Fatal Four Way for the Women’s title is a nice way to sorta bookend this episode. I’m excited to see how Nikki Cross does in particular, but the way this episode began and ended with the focus on that division was fun. Some great matches in between, and this was a pretty solid episode of NXT as we head toward Takeover: San Antonio! I can’t speak to how dreamy Tye Dillinger is this week since he wasn’t on, sorry goddessroleplay…maybe next week?
