WWE Smackdown
December 3, 2010
Norfolk, VA
Report by: Mike Tedesco of Wrestleview.com

“Yes, sir, we promised you a great main event…” The WWE video leads us into the show.

A video airs hyping up our main event. It’ll be Edge taking on Kane in a non-title match to determine the match type at TLC.

The Smackdown video plays and we’re brought into the arena. Todd Grisham, Matt Striker, and Michael Cole welcome us to the show. The ring is surrounded by a bunch of tables, ladders, and chairs.

Rey Mysterio’s music hits and he makes his way to the ring. Mysterio reminds us that Sheamus was crowned the 2010 King of the Ring on Monday. Mysterio said he would have loved to have been King of the Ring but he didn’t get the opportunity thanks to Alberto Del Rio. They show a video of the end of last week’s match between Cody Rhodes and Rey Mysterio. Del Rio crotched Mysterio on the ring post and cost him the match. Mysterio says that everyone who knows him knows that he doesn’t like to complain. What he does is get even. They then show Mysterio distracting Del Rio on Monday to cost him his opportunity in the KOTR Tournament.

Mysterio says to be a king it’s not just about power or wealth. It’s about being a leader and being fearless. Mysterio starts climbing the big ladder in the ring. Mysterio says it’s about climbing so high that you’re not afraid to fall. Mysterio gets to the top of the ladder and says that Del Rio likes to drive fancy cars but he prefers to fly.

Alberto Del Rio’s music hits and he drives into the arena in another beautiful Rolls Royce. I’d like to see him drive into the arena with the old James Bond Rolls Royce. Del Rio instructs a security guard to keep watch over his car. Del Rio stays on the ramp and asks what Mysterio is doing. It’s not about flying, he says. The reason why people like Mysterio climb those ladders is because they want to be at his level. Del Rio says that’ll never happen and he gets into the ring. Del Rio asks if Mysterio remembers the last time he was around him and chairs. Mysterio wound up in the hospital.

Mysterio says he’s not afraid of him because he injured him in the past. Mysterio has been injured by guys who are twice the man Del Rio could ever hope to be. On top of that he always comes back. Mysterio says he’s 100% and better than ever. Now that Del Rio is out here and they’re face to face, maybe they should take care of business right now.

Del Rio now climbs the ladder and says Mysterio is a little chihuahua. Del Rio says a fight isn’t going to happen. Mysterio says he’s wrong. Mysterio didn’t call him out with tables, ladders, and chairs to ask him. Mysterio is here to tell him because no matter how rich he is, he doesn’t make the rules, at least not on Smackdown. Mysterio crossed paths with Teddy Long and it’s official. At TLC it’ll be Alberto Del Rio vs. Rey Mysterio. Del Rio doesn’t look happy about that and says it’s not going to happen. He has no reason to fight Mysterio because he’s already beaten him.

Mysterio knocks Del Rio off the ladder but he quickly comes back and pushes the ladder over. Del Rio stomps away at Mysterio and goes to throw him out of the ring but Mysterio hangs on to the ropes. Mysterio fights back and hits a hurricanrana over the top rope. Mysterio stays on the apron and hits a double leg drop through a table! Del Rio has a nice scratch on his face from that and is in pain.

Mike’s Thoughts

Aside from the enjoyable Jack Swagger vs. Kofi Kingston match (and maybe the opening segment), this edition of Smackdown was a flat out nightmare. I thought this was funny a few weeks ago when Edge was shoving brownies in Paul Bearer’s ear but this feud has completely jumped the shark. There seems to be no thought going into the booking of Smackdown lately. It’s the same thing every week. So Kane can outsmart the Undertaker and put him in a catatonic state but he can’t capture Edge wheeling around a 300-pound man? I literally couldn’t look at the TV at certain points because this was driving me so crazy. I always try to find the good in all things but there is nothing to be happy about in this feud. Then they have a match to determine the stipulation at TLC and they choose a TLC match. Wow, I never would have guessed they’d go in that direction. Just one more week… please, god, just one more week and we can move on from this.

I already said I enjoyed the Swagger/Kingston match and the opening segment. I would have included the opening tag match but, to me, it was just sad. The talent of MVP has been wasted so much that he had no choice but to ask for his release. What a shame. This was a main event caliber talent with a gimmick that worked but they misused him big time. That move to Raw started the decline and he never recovered from that. A heel turn would have been great but that never came through. His talent and connection with the fans showed tonight in his match. There was even a spot where McIntyre wasn’t in position for a spot so MVP had to improvise on his feet. Believe it or not but not every talent on the roster can do that. MVP is a great talent and I hope he gets a chance to shine again in WWE some day and I hope if that day comes he’ll be booked properly.

I’m looking forward to the Alberto Del Rio vs. Rey Mysterio match at TLC. These two have a good chemistry and it should make for an entertaining match. Mysterio putting him through a table at least hints that there will be a No DQ stipulation on this match.

Final Rating: * 1/2
