The show opens with a video package highlighting WWE Backlash on Sunday.

We are live in Philadelphia as the new WWE World Champion AJ Styles, aka the face that runs the place, is officially introduced to a loud reaction.

New WWE World Champion AJ Styles addresses the WWE Universe

AJ Styles grabs a mic. “The champ…is…here!” Styles said he told the WWE Universe he would beat John Cena at SummerSlam and he told everyone he would beat Dean Ambrose and at Backlash he did just that to become the new WWE World Champion. He suggest he could even beat Cena and Ambrose with one arm tied behind his back. “These lips don’t lie and this trophy right here is the proof,” adds Styles. “I am the face that runs the place. I am now the champ that runs the camp.”

John Cena’s music hits to interrupt. Cena is handed a mic and gets inside the ring. Mixed reaction for Cena in Philadelphia. “You can hear all of these people. They know what I know. You have something that belongs to me and I’ve finally decided that I’d like it back,” says Cena. Styles removes the sweatband he took from Cena at SummerSlam and throws it in his face. Cena said Styles still has something that belongs to him. “Bad news for you, I’ve finally decided that I’d like to take it back.” Cena points at the WWE World Championship and quotes Ric Flair’s “to be the man, you’ve got to beat the man.” He talks about winning that title just one more time putting himself in the conversation with the man. Cena can’t think of a better person to make history off of than Styles. “Because you are the face that runs the place, but I’m the man who doesn’t quit.” Cena said he has one goal left in WWE and that is to announce that the 16-time World Champion is here.

Dean Ambrose’s music hits and he heads to the ring. Styles holds up the WWE World Championship in his face. Ambrose has a mic. “You made the biggest mistake of your life on Sunday, boy.” Ambrose said he can handle losing a match, but getting kicked square in the jewels wasn’t acceptable and said Styles stole from him. He said Styles has a new enemy and the life of Styles changes from this moment forward. Ambrose said he isn’t just going to take back his title, but he’s going to take it back with interest. Cena pushes Ambrose to the side. He brings up Ambrose hanging Styles by his crotch on the top rope. Cena said Stone Cold was right to call out Ambrose on his podcast. He said all Ambrose has been showing to WWE is that he has no balls, “brah.” Ambrose gets fired up and starts smiling. He said Cena must be mistaken for someone who gives a damn what he thinks. Ambrose has no patience for Cena and his speeches. “You are a lazy part timer,” adds Ambrose.

Ambrose said Cena is better off doing television shows and movies saying Cena can’t keep up anymore. He said WWE uses Cena as a corporate puppet, but they know and he knows that he can’t get it done in the ring anymore. “I mean dude, you couldn’t even get by this chump at SummerSlam. What ever makes you think you will get through me?” Ambrose said he would never back down from some kind of lazy, Hollywood part timer.

Here comes Shane McMahon. Shane thanks Philadelphia for a big reaction. He talks about John Cena and AJ Styles tearing down the house at SummerSlam and Styles beating Cena clean. Shane takes offense to Styles calling him the face of the place, but that Styles has earned the right to say that. He also talks about Styles and Dean Ambrose tearing the house down at Backlash until the very end when Styles “took the easy way out.” Shane said he will talk about Ambrose’s one-on-one rematch at a later time. He then books AJ Styles defending the WWE World Championship against John Cena and Dean Ambrose in a triple threat match at No Mercy. Shane said that is at No Mercy and wants to settle things tonight. He books John Cena and Dean Ambrose vs. AJ Styles and a partner of his choosing. Shane wonders if Styles will be able to find a partner and brings up how Daniel Bryan may have to appoint a partner for him later tonight. Cena and Ambrose exchange a few words.

Randy Orton will address Bray Wyatt later tonight.

Also taking place is a Fatal 5-Way No. 1 Contenders match featuring Nikki Bella, Carmella, Naomi, Alexa Bliss and Natalya to earn a shot at the Smackdown Women’s Title.
