AEW star wins IWGP Global Heavyweight Title at NJPW Road to G1 event

AEW star Gabe Kidd defeated Shota Umino at a Road to G1 event on Monday at Korakuen Hall, to become the new IWGP Global Heavyweight Champion.

The title change didn’t come without controversy, however. NJPW did a pre-match angle with Kidd attacking the referee before the start of the match, with a bloody Umino saying that he wanted to continue. Umino’s reign lasted only 22 days.

Kidd is in the midst of visa issues and has not been able to compete in the United States. He is not currently not on the card for the NJPW G1 Climax 36 event, which will will take place at the NOW Arena in Hoffman Estates, Illinois on July 11.

Shota Umino had pinned Andrade El Idolo back on the June 14, 2026 to win the IWGP Global Heavyweight Title in a three-way match at the NJPW Dominion Event in Osaka, Japan. The t match also included Drilla Moloney.
