NJPW Dontaku notes: Chris Jericho returns, Okada vs. Omega set, Impact star debuts

NJPW Dontaku

As recapped earlier, the following major angles took place on today’s 5/4 NJPW Dontaku iPPV in Fukuoka, Japan.

* Chris Jericho returned to the company for the first time since New Year’s Dash on January 5, attacking IWGP Intercontinental Champion Tetsuya Naito following Naito’s victory in a 10-Man Tag. Jericho appeared in the crowd wearing a LIJ mask, disguised as a fan and attacked Naito as he was leaving, then laid him out with a Codebreaker and busted him open heavily with the ring bell.

This would appear to set up Naito vs. Jericho for the IWGP Intercontinental Championship at either the Dominion iPPV in Osaka on June 9, or the big G-1 Special event at the Cow Palace in San Francisco on July 8.

* Following IWGP Champion Kazuchika Okada’s successful title defense against Hiroshi Tanahashi in the main event, breaking Tanahashi’s record of consecutive title defenses with 12, Okada and his manager Gedo challenged Kenny Omega to a future title match, presumably at the Dominion iPPV in Osaka on June 9. Omega came out and proposed that since their last title match last year at Dominion went to a 60-minute time-limit draw that the match be contested with No Time Limit and the best 2 out of 3 falls, which Okada accepted.

* Finally, following IWGP Jr. Champion Will Ospreay’s successful title defense against KUSHIDA, another vignette played of the returning Bone Soldier to the company. When the video ended, Bone Soldier was in the ring and laid out Ospreay as Tama Tonga came out to the ring. However, Bone Soldier was not the former Captain New Japan who joined Bullet Club in 2016 as Bone Soldier, but current Impact star and former X-Division Champion Taiji Ishimori, who made his debut for the company.

This would appear to set up Ospreay vs. Ishimori for the IWGP Jr. Championship at Dominion.

Also on the show, Bullet Club reunited, sans Kenny Omega and Cody, following a 10-Man Tag that included most of its members. Omega and Cody fought to the back following the match and Omega’s tag partner Kota Ibushi, left to the back in disgust following Bullet Club getting back together.

The current Bullet Club now features The Young Bucks, Bad Luck Fale, The Guerrillas of Destiny, Hangman Page, Marty Scurll, Chase Owens, Yujiro Takahashi and Bone Soldier.
