Former ECW star Balls Mahoney (Jonathan Rechner) passes away at 44 years of age on Tuesday, cause of death not known

Former ECW star Balls Mahoney (Jonathan Rechner) has passed away at age 44 according to media reports on Tuesday. His cause of death is unknown at this time.

Rechner, who is best known for his time with ECW from 1997-2001, remained as an active wrestler on the independent wrestling scene following the closure of the company including stints with TNA, Ring of Honor, Jersey All Pro Wrestling, IWA Mid South, UXW and USA Pro Wrestling.

He was involved with WWE’s ECW One Night Stand reunion PPV in 2005 and remained active with WWE throughout that year. Rechner signed with WWE in 2006 as part of the revival of ECW and was released in April 2008. He was involved with TNA’s ECW reunion Pay Per View event Hardcore Justice in 2010.

WWE issued the following statement on Tuesday night regarding his passing.

“WWE is saddened to learn of reports that Jonathan Rechner, best known for competing in ECW as Balls Mahoney, has passed away. WWE extends its condolences to Rechner’s family, friends and fans.”
