On Monday, November 14, 2005 at 2:17 PM EST Welcome to this week's edition of the Armpit wrestling quiz. This is going to be a very somber week for everyone, so we’ll try to tone things down. I wrote this quiz before the passing of Eddie Guerrero, so next week’s quiz will be devoted to the life and times of Mr. Guerrero.
Before we begin, I want to share my favorite Eddie Guerrero memory. I’m one of the very few wrestling fans in the United States who was lucky enough to have had the privilege of seeing Eddy and Art Barr perform together during the height of the AAA promotion during their West Coast swing in 1993. I will cherish that memory for a lifetime, because you simply cannot comprehend how over they were in the building that night in San Jose, CA. This was like the Sheik, Freebirds, and Freddie Blassie in their primes. Just countless cups of beer thrown into the ring, and you could feel the hate in the air all around you. It was surreal driving just a few minutes from my house and entering a totally different world, with 5,000 screaming fans beating down the door to get in. Keep in mind that during 1993, it was rare for a WWE house show to draw 5,000 people, and it was not even in the realm of possibility for WCW to draw that. The crowd was 99% Hispanic, and to this day it is the best house show I’ve ever attended. Eddie was a huge part of that night (as were a teenage Rey Mysterio and Konnan), and while the local media will undoubtedly ignore his death, nothing can ever take away those memories from the 5,000 lucky people who got to be there that night. We love you, Eddie. Thank you for everything you ever did for us.
They say that "No one likes a quitter," and the word "quit" has been thrown around a lot this year. Especially last week, when WWE claimed Christian "quit" WWE. That's a nice way of spinning it. Sort of how Dusty Rhodes "quit" TNA, when in reality he was given the boot. Quitting: it's a nice cover-up. So this week's quiz is loosely based on the phrase familiar to wrestling fans for decades: "I Quit."
Last week's winner:
FP, who wants to plug www.thefinishers.com.
Last week's answers: (Click here) for last week's questions.
-Sting beat Flair at Great American Bash '90. The pop was truly deafening.
-Jerry Blackwell was a champ with the AWA.
-DDP isn't with TNA because he didn't want to put over Monty Brown, but eventually agreed to do so provided the finishing sequence was tweaked. TNA didn't like that and never used DDP again. That was the answer I was looking for, however I accepted if you wrote that DDP was busy trying to make it as an actor, since that is partly true as well and my question was misleading.
-The wrestler who matched my clues was Ted Petty aka "Flyboy" Rocco Rock.
-Jerry Lawler is older than Roddy Piper. Both actually look quite young for their ages.
-That was Jeff Jarrett who took Snuka's splash from the cage on Nitro.
-Sherri Martel beat Moolah for the title. As many of you pointed out, Moolah in fact held the title again in 1999. I had forgotten that. I've forgotten a lot about 1999, thanks to Russo's booking.
-True, Dusty Rhodes wrestled AJ Styles on a TNA PPV. If you're wondering why AJ was booked as a heel and had a manager who was several inches taller than he was (thus exposing his height), it's because Russo was booker. That explains much of TNA's booking pre-D'Amore.
-LOD snacked on danger and dined on death.
-Jim Cornette is older than Paul Heyman.
Here are this week's questions. Please email your answers to Quiz@ArmpitWrestling.com. The first person to get all the correct answers to me will be declared the winner and have his/her name listed next week along with anything he/she wants to plug. Remember, once you win, you cannot win again for 3 more weeks.
Question #1
"I will not say the words, you twit. I will not say the words I Quit." That was Mick Foley's battle cry as he built momentum for his own "I Quit" match, which was featured in the movie Beyond the Mat. Whom did Foley wrestle in that famous 1999 match?
Question #2
Much like Shawn Michaels and Scott Hall put ladder matches on the map in 1994, Magnum TA and Tully Blanchard did something similar in the 80s with their "I Quit" classic. What major wrestling event did that match occur on? Please include the year as well.
Question #3
One of Foley's all-time favorite matches is Ric Flair's "I Quit" match with Terry Funk in 1989. It was one of the few matches where the work of Flair's opponent exceeded his own work. Funk, who wrestled the match with a chiseled 6-pack physique, turned in an awesome performance. What televised major event did this match occur on? (You must include the number, too. For example, if it happened at WrestleMania 4, the answer "WrestleMania" is not enough. You'd have to answer "WrestleMania 4." By the way, the Flair-Funk match did not happen at WrestleMania 4, didn't happen at any WrestleMania, and didn't even happen in WWE. It was just an example.)
Question #4
In that Flair-Funk match, they played on Flair's "neck injury" that happened in May of '89. How did Flair supposedly injure his neck?
Question #5
You'd never call the McMahons quitters, would you? Stephanie indeed did her own "I Quit" match at No Mercy 2003. Who was her opponent?
Question #6
Bret Hart was in town for an autograph fanfest this past Saturday about 30 minutes from me. Bret has had an amazing career full of great matches. One match that wasn't so great was his "I Quit" match at WretleMania XI. Whom did he wrestle?
Question #7
The most recent "I Quit" match in WWE was at Judgment Day '05. Who wrestled in that match? (It's funny how questions that are based on events from this year are more difficult than questions based on events from 20 years ago.)
Question #8
Let's go back to that "I Quit" match I referred to in Question 1. Mick Foley lost the match, but he never said "I quit." If that's the case, then how did he lose that match?? Seems like his opponent was up to some foul play.
Question #9
Damn, there haven't been enough famous "I quit" matches to warrant a 10-question quiz. What was I thinking? Okay, let's go back to Magnum TA vs. Tully Blanchard. In addition to an "I quit" match, it was also what kind of match?
A. Cage
B. Texas tornado
C. Dog collar
D. Bullrope
E. Blindfold
F. No DQ
G. Falls count anywhere
H. Casket
I. Last man standing
J. First blood
K. Coal miner's glove
L. Street fight
Question #10
Terry Funk was one of the all-time great promo guys. In the Flair-Funk match, they used the microphone judiciously. What a great idea, right? That way, Funk could use his rich vocabulary to taunt Flair! So in the heat of the match, Funk grabs the mic and demands that Flair quit "before I..." And he paused. What eloquent, witty, funny, trash-talking remark was Funk going to surprise us with? Surely he must've have thought it out for weeks and had something clever planned. So he continued, "Before I... hurt you!" Hurt you??? That's it?? What the... that's the best he could do? Well, at least the pre-match promos from Funk were great. In one memorable promo, he likened Flair's teeth to a horse's teeth. What piece of fruit did Funk compare Flair's nose to? (Hint: the actual line was "Horse-toothed, _______-nosed." Fill in the blank.)
A. Strawberry
B. Papaya
C. Watermelon
D. Banana
E. Pear
F. Kiwi
G. Orange
H. Grapes
I. Pomegranate
J. Gooseberry
K. Mango
L. Pineapple
