On Monday, December 12, 2005 at 5:14 AM EST Welcome to this week's edition of the Armpit wrestling quiz. Poor Ric Flair. Not only was he involved in an embarrassing incident he surely regrets, his employer goes and exploits this incident on worldwide television and at a Raw taping in Flair country. I've been following WWE since 1986, and no year comes close to 2005 when it comes to the lack of class they have shown. From exploiting deaths to glorifying terrorism after a London terrorist attack to firing (and burying) a guy who got cheated on to firing pregnant women to firing Jim Ross to... I don't know where to stop.
In the past, out-of-the-ring brushes with the law were traditionally covered up by wrestling companies. In honor of those cover-ups, this week's quiz is based on "Law Enforcement."
Last week's winner:
Ryan Sadler, with nothing to plug.
Last week's answers: (Click here) for last week's questions.
-Shane McMahon "owned" WCW and Stephanie McMahon "owned" ECW. I wouldn't re-live 2001 even if you paid me.
-Bill Watts banned all moves off the top rope. As Tom Zenk told us when he found out this news, "Oh no, this guy's a real dope!"
-Steve Austin was fired by WCW for being injured, bland, and unmarketable. Bischoff will never live that down.
-That was Jim Herd who fired Flair while he was still WCW champ in 1991. Although according to Herd, it was Dusty's idea. That might be true, but Herd had the power to overrule Dusty, and he didn't. But when Jim Herd and Dusty Rhodes run a wrestling company, did you honestly expect any GOOD business decisions to happen??
-Vince brought back the nWo in 2002 by cutting a creepy promo while looking at himself in the mirror in a dark room. He then turned around to face the camera, and the nWo logo was sprayed across his chair, which you could see in the mirror. The show then went off the air. Very cool.
-True, WCW spent half a million dollars for KISS to perform on Nitro. I love KISS, and even I thought it was a stupid idea. They even paid Dale Torborg a lot of money to perform as a wrestler with a KISS gimmick. Sheesh, thank goodness in 2005, no wrestling company is wasting lots of money on angles with Torborg in an attempt to get over mid-carders. Oh wait, you say it happened last week??
-WCW never made Goldberg wear pink and dance with Liberace. Although Liberace did once dance at WrestleMania 1.
-"That'll put butts in the seats." Tony Schiavone said that in 1999 regarding Mick Foley winning the WWF title in a taped match. That's another thing Bischoff will never live down.
-NBC lost a ton of money with the XFL. Imagine how much money was lost in that venture, and imagine how much money it would've cost WWE to buy out the WCW contracts of Goldberg, Flair, Nash, Steiner, etc. The incompetency is mind boggling.
-By far, you all said WWE's worst decision of the year was removing Jim Ross.
Here are this week's questions. Please email your answers to Quiz@ArmpitWrestling.com. The first person to get all the correct answers to me will be declared the winner and have his/her name listed next week along with anything he/she wants to plug. Remember, once you win, you cannot win again for 3 more weeks. That's our Dr. Keith Rule.
Question #1
In the late 1980s, Jim Duggan was caught with drugs, and then fired by the WWF. Granted, WWF fired him not for the drugs, but because he was breaking kayfabe and managed to get caught. What heel wrestler was Duggan travelling with when he got caught? Younger fans may have to Google this one.
Question #2
Steve Austin got in trouble a few years ago on domestic abuse charges. At the time, whom was Steve married to?
Question #3
This past year, a Hispanic TNA wrestler was no longer used because he was caught with steroids by authorities. Never mind the fact that some other wrestlers in TNA are dripping with steroids, but that's okay because they weren't caught (that's TNA's drug policy: take all the drugs you want, just don't get caught with them). By the way, why isn't TNA promoting to the Latino market? Isn't Mike Tenay on the booking committee?? Name this Hispanic wrestler who was caught with steroids.
Question #4
Wrestling fans HATE snooty news reporters who do reports on wrestling with a smirk. That's why it was such a wonderful TV moment when "Dr. D" David Schults slapped "20/20" reporter John Stossel upside the head. I can watch that over and over again for hours. Yes, it was wrong, but you guys have no idea how that program twists and turns its stories. One time Stossel told one guy off camera, "If there's no conflict, there's no story," and threatened to cancel the interview unless the guy did something controversial. Like Mick Foley said, the real world is faker than wrestling. Anyway, what did Stossel ask Shults that prompted him to hit him?
Question #5
Here's another one to Google. Marty Jannetty once performed the "Rocker Dropper" on a jobber, and broke his neck, paralyzing him. The move has since been renamed to the "Fame-asser" that Kip James uses. What was the name of this jobber who was paralyzed, and then won many millions of dollars in a lawsuit that followed?
Question #6
Sid Vicious got in major trouble with WCW after his infamous hotel brawl with Arn Anderson in 1993. This wasn't just a brawl, but an alcohol induced attempted homicide. It's just a terrible story. What country did this brawl happen in?
Question #7
Big Van Vader, who provided us with the "blooper of the year" on Raw when he fell on his ass, got in trouble with the law 8 or 9 years ago. While overseas, he roughed up an Arab TV talk shot host on the air. It was a work on Vader's part, but the host didn't think it was very funny, and Vader got in lots of trouble. What Middle Eastern country did this happen in?
Question #8
Chris Kanyon, one of the most talented wrestlers WCW ever had, was arrested recently for his part in a brawl. Mind you, none of this was Kanyon's fault, as he tried to break up a fight. What's the lesson? No matter what is going on, if you're witnessing something unlawful, mind your own business. When Kanyon wrestled as Mortis in WCW, who was his manager? (By the way, I'd love to see Kanyon in TNA as Mortis, teaming or feuding with Abyss.)
Question #9
Ricky Morton, perhaps the best babyface tag team wrestler ever, was also recently arrested. I believe he is still in prison as of this writing. I don't blame Ricky for this, because the divorce laws in this county are absolutely deplorable and completely unfair. I've met Mr. Morton before, and he was beyond nice to me. What was Ricky arrested for?
Question #10
This last question is a hypothetical one, and is optional. Suppose you've been hyping a main event world title match for months, and it's happening on a Sunday. The building is sold out and the PPV is expected to do big business. On Saturday night, you discover that one of the guys in the main event was arrested for cocaine possession. He's out on bail, awaiting a trial, and it's all over the news. The main event is less than 24 hours away, the media spotlight is all on your company, and it's a major embarrassment. What would you do? Would you fire the guy? Why or why not?
