On Monday, February 13, 2006 at 1:04 PM EST Welcome to this week's edition of the Armpit wrestling quiz. Since we're capping off one of the most tasteless, disgusting weeks in wrestling history (have you been watching SmackDown?), now would be a good time to do a quiz on "Disgusting Promotional Tactics." We actually did a quiz on this before, but unfortunately there are enough sleazy angles in wrestling history to fill 83 quizzes if we wanted to.
I should point out that quiz responses were through the roof last week. That always happens this time of year, as the same thing happened last year after Batista finally did his face turn. The weeks leading into WrestleMania seem to pique everyone's interest, and then after WrestleMania ends, it deflates like a flat tire. I guess much like wrestlers' physiques, the wrestling business is cyclical. Well, no it isn't, but it's a mythical excuse that promoters like to use when they put out a crappy product that doesn't draw money.
One last thing. In regards to wrestlers taking a stand against management, remember these wise words: "Men are as faithful as their options." That line is credited to comedian Chris Rock. He was referring to infidelity, but it applies everywhere. If you have options, you can take a stand against your boss, your spouse, and your plumber. Without those options, you suck it up and do what you're told. Wrestlers have no options, unless you're Austin, Rock, Goldberg, Sting, Foley, Jericho, Christian, or anyone /* who has enough money to do whatever they want. If you're Rey Misterio or Chavo Guerrero, they must either do what they're told or lose their jobs. And in wrestling, you can't afford to burn bridges. If you've ever had to support a family and pay a mortgage, and then got laid off or fired, then you know what I mean. Sometimes you gotta swallow your pride, and that's hard for many of you younger, single readers cannot grasp. One day you will, and when that happens, I hope you cut Rey and Chavo some slack for participating in these tasteless angles. And if you don't believe Chris Rock, then do some research on Brock Lesnar's behavior over the past 2 years, because he illustrated it perfectly.
Last week's winner:
Erik Jaranilla, plugging www.S2KI.com.
Last week's answers: (Click here) for last week's questions.
-At WM4, Hogan wrestled Andre the Giant.
-Sting and Lex Luger won the Crockett Cup in 1988. I think Bill Apter and PWI had an orgasm over that one when it happened.
-Okay, okay, we goofed. The international tag team tournament was held at Starrcade '90, which wasn't one of the options we listed. I had the Iron Man tournament in mind, which did happen at Starrcade '89. For some reason, I threw in the word "international" and confused everyone. I accepted all answers.
-The 1992 NWA tag team tourney was won by Steve Williams and Terry Gordy.
-They beat Dustin Rhodes and Barry Windham in the finals, held at GAB '92.
-Sting won the King of Cable tournament.
-KOTR '93 was won by Bret Hart.
-Bret beat Bam Bam Bigelow in the KOTR finals.
-Bushwackers were the Sheepherders.
Here are this week's questions. Please email your answers to Quiz@ArmpitWrestling.com. The first person to get all the correct answers to me will be declared the winner and have his/her name listed next week along with anything he/she wants to plug. Remember, once you win, you cannot win again for 3 more weeks. That's our Dr. Keith Rule.
Question #1
Bruiser Brody was tragically murdered in Puerto Rico in 1988. It's a terrible story, made worse by the fact that Brody's murderer is a free man who still wrestles today in Puerto Rico. What Japanese hardcore legend actually devised an angle in 1990 where he would feud with Brody's murderer (Invader #1) and avenge the death of Bruiser Brody? (Thankfully, it never happened.)
Question #2
Of the following wrestling personalities, which one did NOT receive the courtesy of an on-screen graphic tribute on WWE television immediately following his death? (This is not a trick question. This guy happened to die during a time when several wrestlers had also died, and it was felt that if they mentioned his death, wrestling fans would start wondering what the heck was going on with this sleazy business. So it was never mentioned until much later.)
A. Gordon Solie
B. Davey Boy Smith
C. Gorilla Monsoon
D. Owen Hart
E. Crash Holly
F. Curt Hennig
Question #3
Ed Ferrara, a longtime Vince Russo ally who knew even less about wrestling booking than Russo did, once participated in a disgusting angle making fun of Jim Ross and his medical condition. What was the name of the TV character Ferrara portrayed in this stupid angle from the dying days of WCW?
Question #4
Mention "Von Erich" and you will get various reactions from various kinds of people. When Kerry Von Erich promised to win the NWA title from Ric Flair in 1984 (and he did), he dedicated his win to which deceased brother of his?
Question #5
When Muhammad Hassan debuted in WWE, WWE got a lot less heat among wrestling fans than they should have. I got a nasty feeling in my stomach watching WWE try to get heel heat based on the tragic deaths of 9/11. Despite my comments in the beginning of the quiz, this is one gimmick I would have refused just on the personal safety issues alone. And believe it or not, Hassan refused many angles that were pitched to him. In real life, which ethnicity best describes Hassan?
A. Iraqi
B. Iranian
C. Jordanian
D. Italian
E. Tunisian
F. Pakistani
G. Uzbekistani
H. Canadian
I. Native American
J. Mexican
Question #6
You remember General Adnan, don't you? He was part of the anti-American heel trio when WWF exploited the Persian Gulf War in 1990 and 1991. Adnan made the news last year when he lied, I mean, claimed that he knew Saddam Hussein personally when he was younger. True or false: Adnan is of legit Iraq origin.
Question #7
Speaking of the Persian Gulf War angle, one person who defended it was Paul Heyman. His thought was that it didn't matter, because "It's just wrestling." When Heyman ran ECW, he got a lot of bad press (including a TV Guide mention) when one of his TV personalities made a tasteless remark about John F. Kennedy's recent death. Which ECW TV personality made this remark?
Question #8
Everyone knows about the Katie Vick/HHH necrophelia angle from a few years ago. But many of us have forgotten about the feud and angles that led up to it. In storyline, "Katie Vick" was who??
Question #9
It's amazing that WWE never exploited the tragedy in Batista's life, and I hope they never do. What close family member of Batista's suffered from cancer and nearly lost his/her life?
Question #10
I will give WWE credit for two good deeds in recent years. They put Sean Waltman in rehab, and paid for Paul Bearer's surgery. It is possible neither would be alive today without WWE's interventions. This last question is hypothetical. Suppose you were a mid-card wrestler in WWE, in your 30s. You don't make a lot of money, don't have much money saved up, and have generally limited job opportunities outside of WWE. You don't have a college education, but you do have some blue collar skills and could get a job doing manual labor if worst came to worst. You have a wife and young child, and they both depend on you for financial support. WWE asks you to participate in an angle that would exploit Eddy Guerrero's death. It would garner tons of negative press, but those in the know would understand if you did it, considering your options. Because of your mid-card status, it is feasible you'd lose your job if you refused to do it. Would you do it?
