On Tuesday, July 11, 2006 at 2:13 AM EST Welcome to this week's edition of the Armpit wrestling quiz. Sorry for being a little late, but you try moving, packing, and working at the same time. And if you have, then you know what I mean.
We continue this week with “Great American Bash,” years 1990-1996.
Last week's winner:
Joe plugging www.angelfire.com/planet/fprwrestling.
Last week's answers: (Click here) for last week's questions.
-On 7/6/85, Flair faced Nikita Koloff.
-That was “little itty bitty” Ricky Morton.
-GAB ’87 was NWA vs. UWF.
-1988 was the Tower of Doom.
-GAB ’89 was Heyman vs. Cornette. How ironic.
Here are this week's questions. Please email your answers to Quiz@ArmpitWrestling.com. The first person to get all the correct answers to me will be declared the winner and have his/her name listed next week along with anything he/she wants to plug. Remember, once you win, you cannot win again for 3 more weeks.
Question #1
1. The GAB in 1990 was a good show, marking a midway point of a year that wasn't exactly stellar for WCW. Sting was seen as WCW's next top star, just as Cena is/was seen as WWE's next top star. Sting was a better wrestler than Cena and had more charisma, but had nowhere near the promo skills. Women and children loved Sting, and the males did not resent him, but he just never clicked as champ. Part of it was Ric Flair being so popular to the loyal WCW audience, and even though he was 41, Flair was not ready to lose the title because he looked and wrestled like a guy 10 years younger. The company was also making horrible talent decisions that year, further frustrating WCW fans. Sting at his blond-haired peak was tailor made for WWE and would've been a huge star, but it never happened. Sting beat Flair for the WCW title at GAB '90, but the show was stolen by the Southern Boys in their ****3/4 match with what tag team?
Question #2
2. GAB '91 was among the worst PPVs ever, and represented a snapshot of where WCW stood after is stupidly fired Ric Flair. Flair was the most over wrestler on the show, and he wasn't even there. This was a crowd that had supported the GAB events for years, and for awhile was a very strong city for the NWA. Name the city this PPV took place in (the same city most Bashes took place in during those days).
Question #3
3. GAB '92 was smack in the middle of the Bill Watts era. Dark, empty arenas, an ugly blue mat, and rock-bottom morale in the locker room. This show featured an NWA tag title tournament, but most importantly was the birthplace of Big Van Vader's big push in this country. As bad as WCW was during the early 90s, they'd have been a lot worse without Vader. He was the big-man version of Ric Flair, and he was on a roll when it came to match quality. Vader was made into an instant star through a technique called, get this, a clean finish. Vader pinned Sting CLEAN, with no interference, no gimmicks, and no controversy. If you're wondering how to make new stars in this business, that's how. It was a shocking finish at the time, as Vader won the title as a placeholder for Ron Simmons to win it later in Bill Watts' attempt to recreate the magic of the Junkyard Dog. What finishing move did Vader defeat Sting with?
Question #4
4. There was no GAB in '93 or ’94. In 1995, Ric Flair was back on top in WCW, and in that year’s GAB, whom did he wrestle?
Question #5
5. GAB ’96 was one of the best PPVs ever, primarily for the angles. Kevin Sullivan was in charge of much of the booking during this time, and you cannot argue the success of WCW during this time. One of those angles was a new member of the 4 Horsemen, in a very memorable turn. Who was this new Horseman?
