On Tuesday, April 15, 2008 at 2:47 PM EST Welcome to the Armpit wrestling quiz for the week of April 14, 2008. Sorry we’re a day late.
All those clips of Ric Flair this past month brought back lots of memories. Flair has had a storied career, but most knowledgeable wrestling fans would rank 1989 as his best year in the ring, thanks to equally talented opponents Terry Funk and Rick Steamboat. My personal favorite match was Flair-Steamboat at WrestleWar ’89.
Ahh, WrestleWar. Those were the days, weren’t they? WCW/NWA only produced four WrestleWar events, and what better time than now to re-visit them? We now bring you "WrestleWar - Part 1."
Answers from last week:
-Lesnar messed up a shooting star press at WM19.
-Steve Austin refereed the Lesnar-Goldberg match at WM20.
-Hulk Hogan made a surprise run-in at WM21, popping the crowd big-time.
-HHH entered the ring at WM22 in that ridiculous Conan the Barbarian garb.
-At WM23, Flair was demoted to dark match status, not even making the main card.
Here are this week's questions. Remember, the new rules are that you no longer need to submit your questions, and no winners will be declared. We're just doing this for fun and to honor the forgotten world of wrestling history.
1. Dubbed “Music City Showdown,” WrestleWar ’89 hit the streets of Nashville. History was in the air, as longtime wrestling fans filled the arena in what is one of the great all-time wrestling cards of the century. In the main event, Flair won the title back from Ricky Steamboat in perhaps my favorite match ever. Name the three judges sitting ringside for this classic match.
2. Everyone knows the angle that followed the match: Terry Funk delivered a great heel-turning performance, piledriving Flair on the table and “breaking his neck.” It was the perfect end to the Steamboat feud and start to the Funk feud. What did Flair say in his interview after the match that set Funk off?
3. A year earlier Sting was the hottest thing in the NWA. Naturally the company didn’t realize that, and on this show, Sting was on the undercard facing someone who today is a comedic mess of expletives and racial insults. Who was Sting’s opponent at WrestlelWar ’89?
4. Showing that the NWA was out of touch, what music act performed at WrestleWar ’89?
5. WrestleWar ’90 was mostly a forgettable show, but as usual Flair turned in an awesome performance. He and Lex Luger wrestled a very long match that exceeded ****, showing that Flair would wrestle classics even with guys who had less talent. Sting was supposed to wrestle Flair on this show, but Luger ended up getting the shot instead. Why?
Answers will be posted next week.
