On Monday, April 28, 2008 at 3:37 AM EST Welcome to the Armpit wrestling quiz for the week of April 28, 2008. What a week it has been. History was made when John McCain, Barack Obama, and Hillary Clinton appeared on a pro wrestling program in an attempt to win our votes. Watching that was surreal and a real feather in the cap of WWE. I can’t imagine this happening even during the late 90s boom, and while the press may have made a mockery out of it, it must have impressed the heck out of every single person watching Raw that night.
But as history has shown, politics and wrestling have not always been mutually exclusive. We’ve done a quiz on this before, but let’s do another one. This week’s quiz is, “Politics and Wrestling.”
Also want to send well wishes to RVD’s wife, Sonya. My brother-in-law was diagnosed with colon cancer last year, and even with successful surgery and treatment, it’s a real pain. I’m confident she’ll beat it, but it’s definitely a life changing event. Thank goodness Rob is off the road and can tend to his wife.
Answers from last week:
-At WrestleWar ’91, Terry Taylor was managed by Alexandra York (the former Marlena aka Teri Runnels).
-At WW’91, Lex Luger was attacked by Nikita Koloff. Poor Nikita could never make up his mind if he was heel or face. Welcome to the Dusty Rhodes philosophy of booking.
-After Brian Pillman was knocked unconscious, the WarGames was waved off by El Gigante. Whoever said all men were created equal needs to look at El Gigante side by side with Hornswoggle. We’re all equal? Bullsh*t.
-Sid Vicious was heard on camera a few times calling spots in that WarGames match. He asked Rick Steiner, “Is he there?” Rick discretely responded, “Yes,” and Sid flung him across the ring.
-Speaking of Rick Steiner, he was the one who did that top rope bulldog to Iizuka at WW’92, making him a bloody mess. The Steiners had quite the rep back then for being stiff, and later that year they met their match when Gordy and Williams were brought in to feud with them.
-In 1992 the cruiserweight title was called the light heavyweight title. Wade Keller used to complain that it should’ve been called the cruiserweight title because it sounded cooler. Umm, ok. UFC draws huge buyrates with their light heavyweight division, showing that Mr. Keller didn’t quite understand the obvious: it’s not the name of the title, it’s the booking of it. And WCW sucked at booking it.
-At WarGames ’92, Bobby Eaton was hit with the metal turnbuckle bar before submitting. Get well soon, Bobby.
Here are this week's questions. Remember, the new rules are that you no longer need to submit your questions, and no winners will be declared. We're just doing this for fun and to honor the forgotten world of wrestling history.
1. Ric Flair may have shared the womanizing habits of JFK and Bill Clinton, but he is a staunch Republican. Flair campaigned for Mike Huckabee this year, and he has also socialized with President Bush Jr. Flair also campaigned for George Bush Sr in what year?
2. Jesse Ventura shocked the world when he was elected Governor of Minnesota. I remember going to work the next day and people were saying what a joke it was. They must not have realized that this was not Jesse’s first foray into politics. Jesse was the Mayor of what Minnesota city before becoming Governor?
3. For all the talk of John McCain’s temper, Bill Clinton is the one with a history of physical violence. He once tackled his strategist, Dick Morris, and almost took a swing at him before Hillary convinced him that would be a bad move. As for Bill, he was rumored to have been a fan of the Monday night wars. What heel faction was beginning to take off and get over as Bill was running for office for his second term?
4. My Governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, once appeared on Raw several years ago for an angle. Arnold, of course, is a longtime friend of Jesse Ventura. Name the movie those two did together.
5. Former President Jimmy Carter has said his favorite wrestler is who?
6. Which wrestler has a finishing maneuver that is named after (not intentionally, of course) a former Vice President and former Presidential candidate?
7. Barack Obama came under fire last month for his relationship with the controversial Rev. Jeremiah Wright in Chicago. Rev. Wright seemed eerily similar to a wrestling character in the early 90s who did the screaming, over the top religious preacher gimmick. Name that character.
8. The man who once did borderline X-rated vignettes on Raw has a keen interest in Canadian politics. Name the political party Val Venis identifies with.
Answers will be posted next week.
