The Wrestling Professor's Weekly Quiz (June 16 - One Night Stand)
On Monday, June 16, 2008 at 2:46 PM EST The Wrestling Professor sent this in:
Welcome to the Armpit wrestling quiz for the week of June 16, 2008. One night stands happen every 10 seconds in pro wrestling, rock n roll, and anywhere /* where alcohol is served, but there have been only four true One Night Stands in WWECW.
This week’s quiz will test your knowledge on a PPV concept that started out with a bang, and overall, the shows have been pretty good: “One Night Stand.”
Answers from last time:
-The irony of Sonny Onoo suing WCW was that he was one of Eric Bischoff’s best friends. He also had no talent, which is another irony.
-The wrestler from lawsuit who was recently arrested was Hardbody Harrison.
-The racial angle from 1991 was Lex Luger vs. Ron Simmons.
-The angle with Harlem Heat in chains, which was nixed, would have Col. Robert Parker (longtime veteran Robert Fuller). Vincent Carolan pointed me to an excerpt from his book (WrestleRadio USA, which I highly recommend from Amazon.com) in which Booker denied this story, saying it was blown out of proportion. Maybe that’s true, but I do know that when it happened, it was huge news among the newsletter crowd and it sure seemed like it wasn’t blown out of proportion at all. And just a couple weeks ago, Michael Hayes referenced this would-be angle on WWE 24/7.
-Konnan was talking about that “white boy,” Jim Cornette.
-The man who brought Bill Watts remarks to the attention of Turner executives was Hank Aaron. The man who alerted Hank to those comments was Mark Madden. Yes, the same Mark Madden who was just fired for making controversial comments about Ted Kennedy. Ah, the irony. Somewhere Bill Watts is saying, “Karma’s a b*tch.”
-The person who interviewed Vince Russo about his racial comments was Ben Miller. Miller followed up Russo’s comments with the words, “I agree.” Mr. Miller was pretty young at the time, so let’s forgive him for that and chalk it up to immaturity. Russo, however, has no excuse.
-That strange quote about Japanese people at WrestleWar ’92 was made by Jim Ross.
-That was Brock Lesnar who said, “I don’t like gays.” So he married a woman who used to be married to a wrestler whose gimmick was that he was gay.
-“Lucha libras” was the phrase used on the Monday Night Wars DVD by Gene Okerlund.
-The Diva Search debuted in 2005 and was won by Christy Hemme. Here’s a weird story. One time at the bookstore I was calling my wife on my cell phone near the bathroom, and some big guy was giving me a suspicious look. Next thing I know, Christy Hemme walked out of the bathroom. Surreal moment. The big guy was her bodyguard, and Hemme was there for an autograph signing. That at least solved the mystery of why there was a long line of creepy looking young men when I first walked in the store. May each of you experience a time in which you’re standing by a bathroom door and a WWE Diva suddenly walks out of it. Reminds me of when I was watching HGTV two months ago and saw my childhood best friend featured on “Curb Appeal,” or when I was watching Ken Jennings during his undefeated streak on “Jeopardy” and saw my old high school classmate as one of his opponents, or the time I was watching “Just for Laughs” and saw my college friend get pranked. In each case, I had no idea it was coming, and my jaw dropped in pure shock. Felt like a dream.
-Chris Kanyon claimed he was fired from WWE for being gay. Personally, I think he was fired because the WWE writing team doesn’t know the first thing about judging talent. Kanyon is incredibly talented and very much deserves to be employed by either WWE or TNA in some capacity. It always amazes me when WWE Creative “has no ideas” for people. How’s this for a gimmick idea: Chris Kanyon? It worked in WCW, as did his other gimmick of Mortis. Guys with talent and/or charisma can often get over if you just send them out there to wrestle with no gimmick. But how would anyone on the WWE writing team know that.
Here are this week's questions. Remember, the new rules are that you no longer need to submit your questions, and no winners will be declared. We're just doing this for fun and to honor the forgotten world of wrestling history.
1. The first ECW One Night Stand, in 2005, is remembered by longtime ECW fans as an all-time classic. It was no coincidence that Paul Heyman booked the show and was given a lot of creative freedom. Left alone to book, Heyman can do great things. Censored and constrained by WWE, Heyman does not do great things. However, Heyman produces his own Heyman Hustle, which is beyond awful, so he doesn’t always strike gold. But he struck gold on this show. Who apparently came up with the idea to do a One Night Stand PPV?
2. Of all the participants of ONS ’05, three have died (Guerrero, Benoit, Awesome), three have semi-retired (Storm, RVD, Tajiri), and four have joined TNA full time (Rhyno, Sinister Minister, and Dudleys). All the others have gone back to their day jobs, done indies, or remained with WWE. Many performers have passed away since the original ECW started, and on this show they aired a video tribute to them. Who introduced this video?
3. The most talked about incident coming out of ONS ’05 was JBL’s shoot with Blue Meanie. JBL hit him from behind during a huge brawl among all the wrestlers, and for a few seconds, Blue Meanie was on the receiving end of JBL’s drunken, bullying, hard hitting wrath. What was the underlying issue between those two that caused the tension?
4. After the Meanie-JBL incident, WWE feared a lawsuit that by all means they should’ve lost. Meanie never ended up suing. How did WWE appease Blue Meanie after that incident?
5. Paul Heyman gave a tremendous promo at ONS ’05 that was the talk of the industry for several days. Two-part question: According to Heyman, what was the only reason JBL had the SmackDown title, and what were the three words Heyman had for Edge?
6. ONS ’06 was not the event the 2005 version was, but it at least had real ECW elements that future shows lacked. In the main event, RVD won the title from John Cena after interference from whom?
7. As expected, the New York crowd was brutal towards Cena and cheered RVD like their hero. Cena threw his shirt into the crowd and they threw it back at him. It was the funniest crowd reaction I’ve ever seen. Fill in the blank to one famous sign a fan was holding up during the match: “If Cena wins, we _____.”
8. Nothing says ECW like John Cena vs. Great Khali, which was the main event of ONS ’07. This was the first ONS that officially shed itself of anything having to do with the original ECW. What type of match was it?
9. In the very early days of ECW (’94-‘95ish), Florida became the first market outside of the Northeast that ECW expanded into. They had TV on the Sunshine network, and the TV tapings there produced some memorable moments with Dean Malenko, Sabu, Eddy Guerrero, and Cactus Jack. It showed ECW could draw in other markets in which they could get decent television. ONE ’07 took place from what Floridian city?
10. This is an easy one, since it’s very recent. At ONS ’08, what legit injury did Randy Orton suffer?
Answers will be posted next time.
