From the Desk of Mr. V #43
November 26, 2009
By: Anthony J. Valvo of WrestleView.com

Well folks, it is that time of week once again. Welcome to another edition (43rd to be exact) of From the Desk of Mr. V. I am your columnist for the evening, WrestleView.com’s resident teacher Anthony J. Valvo. This week I will have the usual slate. I will have a rule or two; some detentions to issue out, and of course the Gold Stars. I plan on shortening some of the material, yet expanding on other topics. In other words, I will do whatever I dang well please. The best time to read this may be after you finish you turkey and all the fixings. Maybe read this after enjoying a piece of Apple or Pumpkin pie (homemade of course, anything else loses its value). You are in the classroom, enjoy the material brought forth to you.

First off, I don?t know if this will be posted before, during, or even after Thanksgiving. So to all those in the U.S. and in other areas celebrating the day in which we eat until our bellies fill up to the highest degree, I want to say and wish you all a safe and happy Thanksgiving.

Also, Happy Black Friday to those that are looking for a good deal at a store. WARNING: IF YOU ARE ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE WHO SHOVE A KID OVER TO GET $5 OFF AN HDTV, THEN GO STRAIGHT TO DETENTION. You are on notice! Seriously, a man at a Wal-Mart was trampled to death last year. Let’s not have that same tragedy again. I will not be a suspect or victim. I do my shopping online.

Quote of the Week

“I?m thankful for chocolate. I?m thankful for vegetarians and vegans because that leaves more turkey for me.”
– CM Punk

I agree with CM Punk. Once again, Happy Thanksgiving to all my students. And if you are a vegan, then enjoy all the stuffing in the world as well as candy yams.

Classroom Rules

I still have yet to read the Bruno Sammartino interview. Be rest assured I will this weekend, as I will have a lot of time on my hands. But until then, here are a couple rules by the students that will tie you up until next week.

102) If the guest host does a better job at commentary than you have in your whole career, you don?t deserve a job?period! (From: CJ Bowman)

My Take: Since he did not explain (which is ok), I will just provide my thoughts.

What was missed sorely we finally got for at least a few minutes on Monday Night Raw on November 23, 2009. When Jesse Ventura was the guest host, he demanded that Vince be an announcer with him and call the ?Breakthrough? Battle Royal. For once, I did mark out. I listened to their work for hours on DVDs and from memorization. I remembered how great these two were. Well, nearly twenty years later they never missed a beat. In next week’s commentator report card, be rest assured that I will be giving out a grade to Ventura and Vince. I thought they did a great job and I think it should be mandatory that the current WWE commentators listen to them. Well, one in particular and you know who I am talking about here.

Don?t take the last bit serious. I think the majority of the announcers in the WWE have been doing well given their lack of experience. Josh Mathews has shown greatness at times, while Byron Saxton has done a great job at the announce table since his start about a couple months ago. Todd Grisham may be the most improved of 2009 and Matt Striker might very well be the best at his trade (but still needs a little bit more work). I am talking about Jerry Lawler and Michael Cole on this one.

Lawler was a good commentator during the Attitude era, but of course when the PG?d it, Lawler suffered the most out of the other commentators. His work just is not up to par since Jim Ross left for Smackdown. As for Cole, well you all know my thoughts on this ?vintage? announcer. I just don?t like his play-by-play. I thought my mind would change when I started this column, and it has not. The guy is just not that good because he misses a lot in the ring.

Josh Piedra said it best that those guys were owned by Ventura and Vince McMahon in only about a handful of minutes. Though I think Lawler is still an asset to the WWE, I just don?t see Michael Cole as one anymore. You give the guy years to improve and he may have regressed in the last couple. He is just not that good (as Grisham, JR, Mathews, and TNA’s Mike Tenay are all I think better than Cole). When Jim Ross comes back 100%, I hope the WWE brings him back as a commentator and send Cole to the WWE offices so we do not have to hear from him again. Just a thought.

If you have any rules, please send them to my virtual ‘suggestion box? by dropping a line to mistervwv@hotmail.com. I will usually post them, unless I deem them offensive. I will only do this for a couple weeks so if you do have one, send them soon.

Headlines!

Here are some Headlines that I decided to type about during this past week that I found on the best source for professional wrestling, WrestleView.com.

Headline #1 – Armando Estrada is calling it a career

This is sadness for me. The guy was a good mouthpiece for Umaga and he was the last of a dying breed. That breed is simply managers that were very good at the mic. He was excellent in that role and I never really understood why Estrada was dropped as Umaga’s mouthpiece in the first place. But why?WHY is he retiring at a ripe age of just 30?

Well, the answer is because he has a pretty successful business in Arizona of course! His restaurant, called Baby’s Steak and Lemonade, is quickly achieving greatness and I think Estrada wants to be in it 100%. For that, I say thank you Armando ESTRRRRRRRRRRRRADAAAA!! Good luck with your business endeavors and if becomes a country-wide hit, then please put a restaurant in Pittsburgh. I am getting tired of the ones nearby right now.

Headline #2 – Maryse was the Gooker All Along!

Ok, we all know that in 1990 there were two births in the WWE. One of very successful in the birth of the Undertaker. The other one, not so much. Hector Guerrero will and forever be known as the first Gobbledy Gooker, some turkey thing that came out of an egg. Though that crowd in 1990 was very disappointed, the Hershey crowd marked out at the sight of the Gooker. After yet another disappointing Divas contest, Jerry Lawler was in charge of interviewing Melina (but did get a hug from Kelly Kelly?big surprise there).

Once Melina is talking about how happy she was to win, the Gooker took off its head and clocked Melina with it. Emerging from one of the worst gimmicks of all time was none other than Maryse! When she left, I thought the Divas division on RAW would have been ok. Boy was a wrong and I will admit to my mistakes. That division was so bad they actually had the woman that pinned Maryse for the title (Mickie James) is now on another brand because she was too sloppy in the ring. Maryse?Welcome Back!! We missed you (thought some may be in denial).

Headline #3 – Lauren Mayhew is OUT as ECW announcer?

‘so she can pursue acting roles. Whoever signs her up to act really needs a slap in the face. And if the WWE does in fact bring her back, it would be a big mistake. She was absolutely terrible. No matter what anyone says, they can not change my mind.

I got an e-mail from someone saying that Lilian Garcia was not good to start. That I can agree with. However, Lillian improved little by little each week to a point where she was loved by fans all across the world. Mayhew on the other hand is a different story. She just did not have the voice to be a WWE announcer. I know that Rosa Mendes does ring announcing for FCW, so why not give her a chance when this whole storyline with Zack Ryder is over? I would rather look and listen to Rosa than I ever would Lauren Mayhew.

Look, I hope Mayhew does well in her future endeavors. I hope she becomes successful, but just not on the mic inside a wrestling ring.

Headline #4 – TNA WILL be near Pittsburgh in January…

?but too bad it is in Johnstown, PA on the coldest and snowiest days of the year there. It was announced that TNA will be Live in Johnstown on the 14th of January. Now, I am not bashing anything in Johnstown, as I actually enjoy the city. Actually, my wife was born and raised about twenty minutes east from Johnstown. I will say this to TNA right now. It’s not going to draw for you. The War Memorial can?t even draw 2,000 to see a Johnstown Chiefs ECHL hockey game. What are you thinking about doing it there where you can get a good arena right near my back yard.

So, Dixie, Jeremy Borash, even Kurt Angle (fellow Pittsburgh man). Do me a favor and consider the Golden Dome at the Community College of Beaver County. This arena worked well for ECW in the mid-to-late 90s. ECW actually did a PPV show at The Golden Dome (with the help from Shane Douglas) and it drew well. The Golden Dome (actually, more like Silver since the Brass finish has worn off) can seat 5,000, but can easily be tarped over to about 2,000. I really think that many would see the show. It is not a bad venue to have a house show, and of course it would be about five minutes from my residence. Consider that for a minute TNA, and then get back to the teacher later.

To conclude, I must say this. In 1997, ECW’s November to Remember was hosted at The Golden Dome. Shane Douglas defeated Bam Bam Bigelow in the Main Event. Guys like Chris Candido, Rob Van Dam, Sabu, Tommy Dreamer, The Sandman, The Dudley Boyz, Justin Credible, Taz, Nunzio, and probably other future WWE superstars were at this event. The attendance was well over 4,000 people! I know that TNA has a decent following in this area. Give this venue a chance, you won?t be disappointed.

Detentions and Eternal Detentions (I will change this next week to Mr. V’s Naughty List for the Christmas Season)

The following I issued a Detention to for this past week for being quite disappointing.

Eric Escobar – Why are you in a storyline with Vickie Guerrero, let along on the Smackdown roster?

Jeremy Borash – For gracing my TV set yet another week looking like a little pipsqueak. Yes, I say pipsqueak!

The WWE’s treatment of Dolph Ziggler – Sure, he would never have been a main event star. You are still on the list because you creative teams listened to Rey Mysterio and were persuaded into not giving Ziggler an IC run. That is a shame considering he was a decent wrestler.

The WWE’s treatment of Ted DiBiase Jr. – I thought they would have given this guy a better push considering that he has a movie coming out soon. This guy is truly a better talent than Cody Rhodes if he is used properly, which I have not seen yet.

Hulk Hogan – The students know my thoughts on this guy right now. Also, CJ Bowman e-mailed me and said the shows were not planned well.

Ric Flair – See above. You looked pathetic asking for money to get your NWA Title back, and then you are out still partying and wasting money. You sir have my respect as a wrestler, but not as a person.

Hornswoggle – For sending DX to little people’s court, considering that it was YOU who started this the whole time!

The Detroit Lions – I was told to put you here by Paul Meade. But since Matt Stafford got me 79 points in my fantasy league last week, I will only place this team on here one week.

Cleveland Browns – Imagine if Derek Anderson did not complete those two passes against Buffalo in their only win of the season.

People that put Christmas ornaments up before Thanksgiving – I am sure to offend at least 27.856% of the United States.

People that have more than one of those inflatable ?Santas? in their front yard – Students, you are allowed to pelt these things with your BB guns (just don?t lose your eye on those).

Those men and refuse to call Nigel ?Desmond Wolfe? – One of my students (Ben Wismans) chose this to be on the list. I guess I fall victim to this because I did not want to call him Desmond the first couple of weeks.

Jesse Neal – For looking like a ?Create-a-Wrestler? on your return to the Impact Zone.

The following are those I issued out Eternal Detentions, and they will be on there for a while.

Michael Cole – After my headlines, do I really need to answer.

ETS and the Praxis Series – I seriously think that this is still a rip off. You have to pay $155 dollars to take a test that has sixty question and they can?t even provide you with an effective study guide???? Future Teachers, join my coalition in saying ?ENOUGH?! If you want to join the cause, let me know. My goal is to have 100 teacher and/or future teachers on this list. I already have a letter of protest set up.

Dancing with the Stars – For letting Donny Osmond win the Title. UGH!

Gabe Sapolsky – If you don?t like a show, just don?t even attend. The comments you made on your ?MySpace? account is childish. Let’s see if your creation will make big ratings and millions of dollars.

Do any students have any suggestions as to who shall be placed in the world of detentions? Let me know. Thanks.

Mister V’s Honor Roll for the week of November 16 – November 20, 2009

I was actually surprised as to how many students liked the shorter version of my TV Wars and my Honor Roll. So by popular demand, I will keep that format there and may not have to remove these from my column after all. Enjoy my choices

Distinguished Honors – Roderick Strong vs. Bryan Danielson, ROH on HDNet, November 16.

– This was Danielson’s last match on HDNet, and he truly did not disappoint. Strong looked impressive throughout the match, and won this contest via the Super Gut Buster and Running Boot.

High Honors – Chris Jericho and Big Show vs. Kane and Undertaker, Friday Night Smackdown, November 20.

– The match ended in a no contest. Overall, this match was pretty good. The only thing that brought this match down a bit was the lack of force on The Big Show’s punches.

Honors – Zack Ryder vs. Shelton Benjamin, WWE Superstars, November 19.

– This was actually a pretty fun match to watch. Ryder won the match via Zack Attack with the help of Rosa Mendes (who used a cell phone as a prop). Shelton stood out throughout the match and the distraction was all that Ryder needed to get a deserving victory.

Honorable Mention goes out to: Necro/Redwood vs. Ryan/Nana on 11/16; Miz vs. MVP on 11/16; Hurricane vs. Birchill on 11/17; Punk/Regal vs. Christian/R-Truth on 11/17; Henry vs. Rhodes on 11/19; Sarita vs. Flash on 11/19; Team 3D/Rhino vs. Dinero/Hernandez/Morgan on 11/19; Daniels/Wolfe vs. Styles/Angle on 11/19; Batista vs. M. Hardy on 11/20; Morrison vs. Ziggler on 11/20; and Kidd vs. Mysterio on 11/20.

Worst Match of the Week – Mickie James vs. Layla El, Friday Night Smackdown, November 20.

– The only saving grace was McCool singing Old McDonald. Now?only if Mickie James was not a pig and had the Arby’s hat logo on top of her head?

Dishonorable Mention goes out to: Brown vs. Matthews on 11/16; Marella vs. Guerrero on 11/16; Melina vs. Fox on 11/16; Archer vs. Andrews on 11/17; Escobar vs. Yang on 11/19; Red vs. Steiner on 11/19; Abyss vs. Raven/Stevie on 11/19; and McIntyre vs. Finlay on 11/19.

Weekly TV Wars

Though Smackdown has clinched the #1 spot, there is still a debate as to who can clinch the #2. Still five more weeks to decide and your votes may make the difference. Place your pick for the show of the week by e-mailing me at mistervwv@hotmail.com.

And now?The Best of for each show this past week.

ROH on HDNet (November 16)

Best Segment: Since this was all focused on Danielson throughout the entire match, I would have to say his top two ROH moments really took the top spot here.

Best Match: Roderick Strong vs. Bryan Danielson (Grade: A)

Monday Night RAW (November 16)

Best Segment: I would love to say some of the Piper segments, but I would have to say the best clearly was Kofi Kingston’s attack on Randy Orton. That was a surprise that we NEEDED to see!

Best Match: The Miz vs. MVP (Grade: B-)

ECW (November 17)

Best Segment: Ryder showing his love to Rosa Mendes.

Best Match: CM Punk and William Regal vs. Christian and R-Truth (Grade: B)

WWE Superstars (November 19)

Best Segment: The Jay-Z video package of the MSG moments and RAW main event clips.

Best Match: Zack Ryder vs. Shelton Benjamin (Grade: B)

TNA Impact (November 19)

Best Segment: Not a good night for segments on Impact. I will give the edge to ODB’s Trash Talk with Homicide. At least that was a bit entertaining.

Best Match: Sarita vs. Alissa Flash (Grade: B-)

Friday Night Smackdown (November 20)

Best Segment: CM Punk’s Intervention Segment (when he dumps whiskey into a garbage can in front of that Philly crowd).

Best Match: The Brothers of Destruction vs. JeriShow ? Josh Piedra (Grade: B)

Students? Choice for Best Show: Monday Night Raw (1 Point) – vote was 3-2

Mr. V’s Runner-Up for Best Show: Friday Night Smackdown (1 Point)

Mr. V’s Pick for Best Show of the Week: Monday Night Raw (2 Points)

Overall Standings

1) Friday Night Smackdown (61 Points) **Clinched Best Show of 2009**
2) Monday Night Raw (43 Points)
3) TNA Impact (40 Points)
4) ECW (29 Points)
5) ROH on HDNet (12 Points)
6) WWE Superstars (1 Point)

Do you have a choice for what should be the best show? Then don?t just read it?be a part of it! Send in your choice by e-mail. Thanks in advance.
