Well, another year, another TripleMania in the books and I pretty much bombed on my predictions. I think I was 4-3 when it was all said and done and I did get the two Main Events right. I?ve heard mostly positive comments coming out of the show but I haven?t had a chance to see it yet (it still hasn?t leaked to the internet to my knowledge and I don?t have Mexican PPV so I couldn?t watch it live). I?m looking forward to seeing it and I may review some of the matches for the column or at least post them on the forums. This week reviewed the first 2 Cruiserweight Title Semifinals matches and next week I?ll release June’s Roll Call of Champions.

Dr. Wagner Jr. Officially Signs with AAA
This week AAA President, Joaquin Roldan, announced that new AAA Mega Heavyweight Champion: Dr. Wagner Jr. had officially signed a one year contract with the company. He said that Wagner would finish out any previously scheduled INDY dates but then that’s it. After the first year they will renegotiate for another contract.

El Mesias, Billy Boy, & Hijo de Tirantes Arrested, El Mesias Speaks Out
AAA stars El Mesias and Billy Boy as well as referee, Hijo de Tirantes, were all arrested early this week stemming from a beating they put on a man in a club. It’s been confirmed that they were drunk but witnesses as well as the injured man have claimed that they were high on cocaine as well. The injured man claimed that the 3 jumped him after he confronted them about using drugs in his vehicle. Not such great news coming out of your biggest show of the year. One plus for AAA is that Mesias already dropped the belt. El Mesia responded to these charges and claimed that he had no involvement in the incident and claimed to not use drugs. He says that he was simply attempting to calm the situation between the man, Billy, & Tirantes but thinks the man just wants to mess with their careers.

3) Charly Manson, X-Pac, & Rocky Romero def. El Zorro, Escoria, & Ozz

* NOTES *
– Super Fly was stretchered out in the opener. Fly wore his father, El Seminarista’s, mask in the match and Aerostar’s mask was extremely cool. Half of it was like normal and the other half was Abismo Negro’s mask. Very cool of him to do.
– In the Segunda Billy got the pin on Elegido and afterward Mari Apache ran out and jumped Sexy Star.
– AAA paid tribute to Abismo Negro, Antonio Pena, & the recently departed Mitsuharu Misawa.
– In the Cane Trios Match DMEX got the win when X-Pac hit two X-Factor’s on Zorro and then he and Rocky canned the hell out of Zorro after he innitially refused to take the cane shots. He still didn’t take the full 10.
– Lots of tables and ladders used in the Cruiserweight match. Koslov (the champion) was eliminated first by Stone and then Tiger pinned Stone and Crazy to win the belt. Wow, Koslov was champion for all of about 2 weeks.
– Marco went for a dive in the Tag Titles match but evil referee Tirantes tripped him and then Nicho got the pin to keep the belts.
– AAA Title match went about 35 minutes and both men bled. Wager got the clean pin after two Wanger Drivers.
– In the Main Event Silver King didn’t wear his mask but he did wear face paint that looked like his mask (kinda lame, huh?). it was all over the place and many people got invovled including DMEX, Konnan, etc. Evans did an insane dive off the top of the cage onto the Legion. Konnan showed up on the jumbotron and revealed that he had the key to the cage so Cien Caras ran backstage and along with D-Generation MEX got the key back. El Zorro ran out wearing his old mask and jumped Konnan turning tecnico! In the end it was down to Santo and Silver King left in the cage and Santo was able to get out first giving control back over to the Roldans!

Dos Caras Jr. Signs With WWE!
I know, I know, you guys are thinking “not this damn rumor again” but believe it or not this is actually for real. After re-signing with CMLL under a 4-year contract last year after nearly (supposedly) going to WWE several times Dos has finally pulled the trigger. Super Luchas broke the news this week. Dos has recently turned rudo and has been feuding with Shocker. This weekend he missed a show and CMLL claimed that he missed his flight but apparently it was due to him officially leaving. Good luck to Dos Caras Jr. in his venture to America!

Former CMLL Star, El Guerrillero, Passes Away
On Monday morning former CMLL (then EMLL) and UWA star, Cesar “El Guerrillero” Valentino, passed away due to an illness (that his family did not disclose). Guerrillero was a star in the 60’s, 70’s, & 80’s in both EMLL and UWA. He was a star in EMLL for 13 years before joining the UWA and eventually becoming the very 1st UWA Jr. Light Heavyweight Champion defeating Anibal America Salvaje to win the belt in November of 1977. He held the belt until early 1979 (losing it to Gran Hamada) and he went on to have big feuds with the likes of Anibal, Canek, El Solitario, Villano III, Ray Mendoza, & many others. Cesar went on to become a booker for the new AWWA promotion in the 80’s and won their World Jr. Light Heavyweight Title beating the legendary 4-Horsemen: Tully Blanchard for the belt in 1983. He officially retired in 1993. Though he was a legendary wrestler it is possibly his role as a trainer that is his biggest accomplishment. Cesar is responsible for the rejuvenation of the lucha minis in the late 70’s and is responsible for training such minis as Fili Estrella, Gabby da Silva, Gulliver, & Pequeno Goliath. Cesar was 68 at the time of his death. R.I.P. to El Guerrillero!

INDY & OTHER NEWS

Dragon Gate USA Announces PPV Deal, New DVD, New Match, & ROH Stars!
This week Gabe Sapolsky and the Dragon Gate promotion made a huge announcement regarding the new DGUSA promotion. Starting in September Dragon Gate USA will be airing PPV’s on InDemand and TVN PPV networks in the United States as well as in Canada. Also, on a very interesting note the company that is handling the PPV distribution for DGUSA is actually G-Funk Promotions who did the same thing for Ring of Honor up until this past month. DGUSA will be presenting 6 PPV’s in 2009 and 2010 starting with next months debut show “Open The Historic Gate” to be shown on PPV in September. The following is the first promotional poster made for DGUSA (courtesy Dragon Gate USA myspace):

Also, DGUSA released their 2nd DVD, “Live In L.A.” this week featuring Dragon Gate’s first ever show in the United States last fall. The DVD features English Commentary and the card is as follows:
1) Genki Horiguchi vs. El Generico
2) Hollywood Stalker Ichikawa vs. Necro Butcher
3) Dragon Kid & Kendo vs. Keni’chiro Arai & Taku Iwasa
4) Open The Dream Gate Title: Shingo Takagi (c) vs. PAC
5) Open The Twin Gate Titles: Ryo Saito & Susumu Yokosuka (c) vs. The Young Bucks
6) Open The Triangle Gate Titles: Yamato, Yasushi Kanda, & Gamma (c) vs. Naruki Doi, Masato Yoshino, & BxB Hulk
It’s for sale on their website, DGUSA.tv, for only $15. DGUSA’s first English-commentary DVD released last year featured commentary ROH’s Dave Prazak and Lenny Leonard, but this DVD (and I’m guessing all future DVD’s as well) will feature commentary from Pro Wrestling Guerrilla’s Disco Machine & Excalibur. Hey, Gabe, why don’t you come to talk to me about doing the commentary?! Hey, a guy can dream can’t he? Also, DGUSA announced that the second Main Event for the “Open The Historic Gate” debut show would be Open The Dream Gate Champion: Naruki Doi facing Shingo Takagi in a Non-Title Match! Also, Ring of Honor stars Davey Richards (1/2 of the ROH World Tag Team Champions) and Bryan Danielson have been booked for the Chicago DGUSA show in September!

Rey Mysterio Jr. Puts His Mask On The Line!
At this week’s Friday Night Smackdown taping the ‘E’ announced that Chris Jericho would put his Intercontinental Championship on the line against Rey Mysterio Jr. at The Bash PPV, but Rey Mysterio Jr. would also be putting his mask on the line! This is the 2nd time Rey has put his mask on the line vs. a title, the first being against Eddie Guerrero at Halloween Havoc 1997 and we all remember the classic that came from it. Of course we all know that Rey originally lost his mask in 1999 against Kevin Nash & Scott Hall (one of the dumbest things WCW ever did) but this feud between Jericho and Rey has been by far the best thing on WWE TV in the last few months and every match the two have put on has been simply awesome. I’m one of the ones that really hopes this feud continues well onto into the summer and maybe even further because there is so much these two have to offer and have always had great matches even going all the way back to their WCW days.

DGUSA Announces New CHIKARA Star for Debut Show
This week DGUSA announced that Osirian Portal member (and one half of the CHIKARA Tag Team Champions), Amasis, would be part of the rudo team for the special CHIKARA 8-Man Tag at the DGUSA debut show. Amasis joins teammates Gran Akuma & Icarus has 3 of the 4 members of the rudo team that will be facing Fire Ant, Soldier Ant, and their 2 as-of-yet unnamed tecnico partners. One can only imagine that Amasis’ partner Ophidian will be the final member of the rudo team but nothing has been confirmed yet. Also, former ECW and WWE diva Dawn Marie has been announced as the special “host” for DGUSA’s debut show as well as their second show in the Fall in Chicago.

CHIKARA Announces 2 New Young Lions Cup Participants
This week CHIKARA confirmed 2 more participants for Augusts? Young Lions Cup VII Tournament. New star, Yellow Dog, will make his CHIKARA debut in the tournament. Yellow Dog is an INDY wrestler from the Midwest primarily wrestling in IWA Mid-South. Also, they announced CHIKARA (and ROH as of late) star, Cloudy, would be making his 2nd Young Lions Cup appearance. 7 of the participants have been announced thus far:
– Create-A-Wrestler (3rd appearence in YLC)
– Soldier Ant (2nd appearence in YLC)

Lucha Match Spotlight:
AAA Cruiserweight Championship Tournament Semifinals
Jack Evans vs. Extreme Tiger
04/21/09

This is the first Semifinals match of the tournament and Evans comes in after defeating Teddy Hart in the Opening Round and Tiger beat Crazy Boy to advance. They lockup in the center of the ring and Tiger gets Jack in a waistlock but Teddy reverses it into a side headlock. Tiger pushes Jack off into the ropes and gets nailed with a shoulder block. Jack then comes off the ropes and hits a dropkick and then whips Tiger into the corner. Evans goes for a Corner Splash but Tiger moves and hits a running dropkick salto in the corner followed by a basement dropkick to the face of Evans. Tiger hits a Split Legged Corkscrew Moonsault! 1..2?NO Evans kicks out. Tiger slaps Evans and then chops him on the ropes. Tiger attempts to whip Evans into the ropes but Evans holds onto his arm and spins around and hits a Spinning Enziguri. Evans with a front kick and then he whips Tiger into the ropes and hits a dropkick salto of his own. Evans stands on Tiger’s chest and hits a Standing Corkscrew Moonsault Legdrop! 1?2?NO Tiger still kicks out! Evans stomps on Tiger and then hits a snapmare followed by a running kick for another nearfall. Evans puts Tiger in a Camel Clutch! Evans then slams Tiger’s head to the mat and hits a Double Foot Stomp to the back of Tiger! Evans attempts to whip Tiger into the ropes but Tiger reverses it. Evans catches himself on the ropes and Tiger charges at him but Evans gets both feet up and kicks Tiger off. Evans? momentum sends him backflipping over the top rope and landing on the apron. Evans then goes for a springboard move but Tiger catches him in midair with a Diamond Cutter! Evans falls out to the floor and Tiger hits a nice Sliding Dropkick through the ropes to Evans on the floor. Tiger attempts to throw Evans into the apron but Evans grabs the bottom rope and swings around underneath the bottom rope into a type of 619 move kicking Tiger in the face! Evans then attempts an Asai Moonsault but Tiger grabs his boot and Evans falls face-first on the apron. Tiger throws Evans back into the ring and gets a nearfall. Tiger starts to whip Evans into the ropes but pulls Evans into him instead of puts him up on his shoulder dropping him in a Torture Rack Slam. Tiger nonchalantly covers Evans and only gets a two count out of it. Tiger chops Evans a bit more and then whips him into the corner but Evans leaps to the middle rope and then springboard moonsaults over the ropes (remember AAA uses the 6-sided ring like TNA) landing on the apron. Evans then hits a forearm on Tiger as he charged at him and goes for the Springboard Spinning Enziguri but Tiger ducks it. Tiger goes for a clothesline but Evans bridges back in the Matrix-type move avoiding the lariat. Evans hits a big Enziguri and then picks Tiger up and wraps him up in the ropes and kicks away at Tigers chest and then hits a Mafia Kick to the side of Tiger’s head! Evans then hits a Standing Corkscrew Moonsault! 1?2?NO Tiger kicks out! Evans attempts to whip Tiger into the ropes but Tiger reverses it and attempts a spinning heel kick. Evans ducks and then kicks Tiger in the sternum. Evans goes for a clothesline but Tiger grabs his arm and attempts to whip Evans into the ropes, but Evans reverses it and Tiger slides underneath the bottom rope to the floor. Evans follows him out and Tiger kicks him and then drapes him over the guardrail. Tiger climbs to the top rope and hits the Guillotine Suicida (Diving Guillotine Legdrop to the floor)! Tiger rolls Evans back into the ring and falls over him, 1?2?NO Evans kicks out. Tiger covers again and still only gets a two count. Tiger comes off the ropes and goes for a clothesline but Evans blocks it with his foot spinning Tiger around right into a Hook Kick! Evans then hits a Running 450-Splash! 1?2?NO Tiger still kicks out! Evans whips Tiger into the ropes and hits a kick to the gut and then charges at Tiger, but Tiger moves and Evans gets hung up in the ropes. Tiger climbs up top and hits a Diving Double Foot Stomp to the hanging Evans! 1?2?NO Evans still kicks out! Tiger picks Evans up and hits the Vertebreaker! Winner: DRAW

(That was a VERY entertaining match. Both guys worked well together and there wasn?t a ton of botches though some sequences were a little too slow for my taste making them not look as good. If you didn?t like the finish, worry not, because AAA ruled that they have a rematch to decide who will make it to the Finals. ***)

(Another very good match and very entertaining. Lots of good back and forth stuff mixed with some high spots and submissions. They also furthered the storyline between Marco/Latin and La Hermandad 187 as well. ***1/2 Not as good as Alex vs. Rocky but still very good.)
