Staff predictions: WWE Wrestlemania 27 PPV

Predictions from the Faculty
Wrestlemania 27 Edition
April 3, 2011
Predictions by: Wrestleview Columnists and Staff
Written by: Anthony J. Valvo of Wrestleview.com

Introduction

Welcome to the latest edition of “Predictions from the Faculty” (Season #3). This weekend, we gathered our thoughts for the upcoming WWE Pay-Per-View, as we will provide our selections for The “Super Bowl” of professional wrestling, WrestleMania XXVII. The show will be held in Atlanta, GA.

The card currently will have nine matches. More than likely, those are the only matches we will predict.

In case you are new to reading these predictions, here is the format. Each Pay-Per-View a few of the columnists on WrestleView provide predictions on who they think will win the matches. We accumulate throughout the end of the Faculty’s year (in this case, the 2012 Royal Rumble).

What makes this entirely different to others is that you, the reader, can provide your picks for a spot to have yours posted in an upcoming PPV. All the readers have to do is either leave me a message on Facebook or e-mail at mistervwv@hotmail.com. The winner among the “WrestleView Students” will win an opportunity to post their picks under the “Student of the Week” tab in the predictions standings (if they outright defeat the Students of the Week). We all thank you for your participation.

New: Tie-Breakers will determine standings!

I have decided to prevent some tiebreakers, I will issue points to Title Matches that are predicted correctly. There are three championship matches on the card, so the maximum amount of points to go along with the win/loss standing will be three points. Also, if I throw out a pick for a championship, then obviously no bonus will be counted for that particular match.

But what, to the WrestleView “students”, there is more!

I got approval for this decision, and for the FIRST time in our three seasons the students will compete for PRIZES!!! That is right, we felt that your loyalty to the article shall be rewarded. However, the prizes will not be handed out until the FINAL PPV Prediction of the season (which will be WWE’s Royal Rumble 2012). So not only will one get a chance to earn a Gold Star and be a part of this game, but it will be for a competition.

The WrestleView Staff Standings

Well, we got our second “Dean of the Third Season” in as many PPVs. Thanks to a perfect record, Mike Tedesco is our new leader. Defending champion Dave Stephens is holding still in the top five, two wins behind Mr. Tedesco.

2011-2012 Predictions From the Faculty Roster (TNA Victory Road record in parentheses)

1) Mike Tedesco (WWE Smackdown and WWE Superstar Recaps)……….15-4 (5-2)
2) Josh Boutwell (TNA Impact Recaps/Viva La Raza)……………………………15-4 (6-1)
3) Dave Stephens (Raw Recaps/That’s a Wrap/Teachers Lounge)……….14-5 (6-1)
4) Ryan Rivera (ROH on HDNet Recaps)…………………………………………………14-5 (6-1)
5) Anthony Valvo (From the Desk of Mr. V/Teacher’s Lounge)……………….13-6 (6-1)
6) WrestleView Students (The Readers of the article)……………………………..13-6 (5-2)
7) Greg McNeish (The Velvet Room)……………………………………………………..12-7 (3-4)
8) Matt O’Brien (Notes from the Nosebleeds)…………………………………………12-7 (3-4)
9) Nicholas Gray (The Velvet Room)……………………………………………………….12-7 (4-3)
10) Jose Marrero (Wrestling Rumblings/The Eye Gouge)………………………….12-7 (5-2)
11) Evan O’Brien (WV International Desk)………………………………………………..11-8 (3-4)
12) Gregory “Grash” Walek (WWE NXT Recapper)…………………………………….11-8 (5-2)
13) Clinton Bowman (The Velvet Room)……………………………………………………10-9 (4-3)
14) Darraugh O’Connor (WV International Desk)……………………………………..7-7 (4-3)

Tie-Breaker Points – Which are based on Championship matches correct

8: Mike Tedesco
7: Josh Boutwell
6: Ryan Rivera; Dave Stephens; Nicholas Gray; Anthony Valvo
5: Matt O’Brien; Evan O’Brien; Jose Marrero; CJ Bowman; Gregory Walek.
3: Greg McNeish
2: Darraugh O’Connor.

And of course, the WV Students average will be part of the standings. I have taken out the “Students of the Week” for this season. However, do not worry. Those that scored the highest will still be welcomed to participate in an upcoming article.

This weekend, our Student of the Week will be Randy McWilliams. Mr. McWilliams did something three weeks ago that I never thought would happen, and that was post a 7-0 record for the TNA Victory Road PPV and defeat FOURTEEN Students of the Week to be the only WrestleView Student to provide picks for WreslteMania. Congratulations and Good Luck.

The Best of the Class (Top 3 earn a prize. Tie-Breaker Points in parentheses)

Prizes:

1st Place – A DVD Set of our choosing.
2nd Place – A T-Shirt
3rd Place – A Coffee Mug
Worst – TNA Victory Road 2009 (or 2011) DVD.

(W/L from TNA’s Victory Road is in first parentheses)
(Tiebreaker Points are in second)

1) Paul Meade……………………………………………………16-3 (6-1) (7) – Tie for #1
2) Brandon Ewing………………………………………………16-3 (6-1) (7) – Tie for #1
3) Michael Fox……………………………………………………16-3 (6-1) (7) – Tie for #1
4) Randy McWilliams…………………………………………..15-4 (7-0) (7) – Tie for #2
5) Travis Thomas………………………………………………….15-4 (6-1) (7) –Tie for #2
6) VKingoftheWorldV………………………………………….14-5 (5-2) (7) – Tie for #3
7) Wade Bradford………………………………………………..14-5 (6-1) (7) – Tie for #3
8) Robert Downing………………………………………………14-5 (6-1) (7) – Tie for #3
9) Nick Latham…………………………………………………….14-5 (6-1) (7) – Tie for #3

There are three other students with a 14-5 record, but two have six tiebreaker points and one has five points.

One WrestleView Student is in sole position of the basement (aka last place and most incorrect predictions). The “Student” was informed of this. The worse record stands at 10-9.

Also to those that have participated in both PPVs, keep it up. This by all means is nowhere close to being over! Don’t give up!

And now, the moment you all have been waiting for…

Predictions for WrestleMania XXVII

*** NON-CHAMPIONSHIP MATCHES ***

Eight-Man Tag Team Match
The Corre (Wade Barrett, Heath Slater, Justin Gabriel, and Ezekiel Jackson) vs. Santino Marella, Vladimir Kozlov*, The Big Show, and Kane

*- Kozlov reportedly was attacked by The Corre at Axxcess. There are rumors that Kofi Kingston will be the replacement as of the time I typed this out.

Dave S. – BIG SHOW, KOZLOV, KANE, AND SANTINO

Mike T. – BIG SHOW, KOZLOV, KANE, AND SANTINO

Josh B. – THE CORRE.

Ryan R. – SANTINO, KOZLOV, SHOW, AND KANE

Anthony V. – Well, if they add Kofi it makes sense. However, I already make my pick before this potential change and I will say that CORRE wins. What better way for those guys to make a statement than to earn a WrestleMania victory.

Greg M. – THE CORRE. Kane doing the trombone on Monday was a dead give-away. If they were winning, they would have saved that celebration for Mania.

Matt O. – TEAM SANTINO.

Nicholas G. – KOZTINOSHOWKANE.

Jose M. – N/A

Evan O. – THE CORRE

Gregory W. – KANE, BIG SHOW, SANTINO MARELLA, AND VLADIMIR KOZLOV

Clinton B. – KOZTINO AND SHOWKANE.

Darragh O. – SANTINO MARELLA, VLADIMIR KOZLOV, BIG SHOW, AND KANE

Randy M. – THE CORRE

CONSENSUS: The Corre have been the upstart faction on the Smackdown brand since January when Barrett was exiled from The Nexus. For months, The Corre have taken some titles with the WWE Tag Team Championship and the Intercontinental Title. However, the staff decided to go with the team of SHOW, KANE, MARELLA, and KOZLOV to find a way and win this 8-man tag team.

SHOW, KANE, MARELLA, AND KOZLOV 8; The Corre 5.

Six-Person Intergender Tag Team Match
John Morrison, Trish Stratus, and Snooki vs. Dolph Ziggler, Layla, and Michelle McCool

Dave S. – MORRISON, STRATUS, AND SNOOKI

Mike T. – MORRISON, STRATUS, AND SNOOKI

Josh B. – MORRISON, STRATUS, AND SNOOKI

Ryan R. – Seeing how I could care less about this match, I’ll go with MORRISON, STRATUS, and that Jersey Shore trash, SNOOKI!

Anthony V. – MORRISON, STRATUS, and SNOOKI. I don’t want this to happen, but when the WWE has a celebrity compete in the ring they rarely lose (if not rarely, then never). I pray it is the last time I see anyone from that diseased-filled show on my television.

Greg M. – TRASH STRATUS, JOHN BORRISON, AND SNOOGI. Celebs don’t lose at Mania. Ever.

Matt O. – SNOOKIE AND CO.

Nicholas G. – TEAM SNOOKI

Jose M. – TEAM SNOOKI

Evan O. – JOHN MORRISON, TRISH STRATUS, AND SNOOKI

Gregory W. – TEAM SNOOKI

Clinton B. – TEAM SNOOKI (Snooki pins Layla)

Darragh O. – JOHN MORRISON, TRISH STRAUS, AND SNOOKI

Randy M. – JOHN MORRISON, TRISH STRATUS, AND SNOOKI

CONSENSUS: The staff is a very bright group of people. We all know that when a celebrity is involved in a WrestleMania, they always walk away victorious. It is the same case in this match. Expect MORRISON, STRATUS, and SNOOKI to win in hopefully an entertaining bout.

MORRISON, STRATUS, and SNOOKI 14; Ziggler, McCool, Layla 0.

Singles Match with “Stone Cold” Steve Austin as the Special Referee
Jerry Lawler vs. Michael Cole

Dave S. – LAWLER

Mike T. – LAWLER

Josh B. – LAWLER

Ryan R. – JERRY LAWLER is going to make Michael Cole his bitch on Sunday!! The King will prevail!!

Anthony V. – LAWLER. Cole will probably be eating out of a straw if Lawler hits the Piledriver.

Greg M. – LAWLER. This will be gloriously hilarious. Guaranteed to be a satisfying payoff.

Matt O. – LAWLER

Nicholas G. – LAWLER

Jose M. – JERRY LAWLER

Evan O. – JERRY LAWLER

Gregory W. – LAWLER

Clinton B. – JERRY LAWLER

Darragh O. – JERRY LAWLER

Randy M. – JERRY LAWLER

CONSENSUS: For over a year, Michael Cole has riled up the likes of Daniel Bryan, The WWE Divas, and of course Jerry Lawler. The WrestleView STAFF easily predicts that JERRY LAWLER will be punching his way into all our hearts. If one is looking for entertainment, this is it.

JERRY LAWLER 14; Michael Cole 0.

Singles Match
Randy Orton vs. CM Punk

Dave S. – ORTON

Mike T. – CM PUNK

Josh B. – PUNK

Ryan R. – CM PUNK

Anthony V. – CM PUNK. I smell some sort of shenanigans, and someone is going to come to the aid of CM Punk. Besides, Punk has lost more than won in the books since he became a faction leader (with the SES and New Nexus).

Greg M. – CM PUNK. Of all the matches that feel like they’re leading to an Extreme Rules rematch, this one is the surest thing. Besides, there’s got to be a couple heel victories scattered around.

Matt O. – PUNK

Nicholas G. – ORTON

Jose M. – RANDY ORTON

Evan O. – RANDY ORTON

Gregory W. – CM PUNK

Clinton B. – CM PUNK

Darragh O. – RANDY ORTON

Randy M. – RANDY ORTON

CONSENSUS: The WrestleView Staff is very torn on this match. Both actually have the same personality in the ring and their move set is very methodical. However, in the end a slight majority went with CM PUNK to defeat Orton because in order for the story to continue, the booking team should give Punk some momentum.

CM PUNK 8; Randy Orton 6.

Singles Match
Cody Rhodes vs. Rey Mysterio

Dave S. – MYSTERIO

Mike T. – MYSTERIO

Josh B. – MYSTERIO

Ryan R. – MYSTERIO

Anthony V. – MYSTERIO. I will not be surprised if Rhodes pulls off the upset, but I think WrestleMania is a babyface-heavy show. Mysterio is a popular character and will win this, but Rhodes wins the next PPV if the story continues.

Greg M. – MYSTERIO. This is a showcase for young Rhodes, but he’s not ready to go over on the grandest stage of them all.

Matt O. – RHODES

Nicholas G. – REY MYSTERIO

Jose M. – CODY RHODES

Evan O. – REY MYSTERIO

Gregory W. – REY MYSTERIO

Clinton B. – REY MYSTERIO

Darragh O. – REY MYSTERIO

Randy M. – REY MYSTERIO

CONSENSUS: In a match that many of us are thinking could be the best match of the evening, the vast majority decided to go to REY MYSTERIO in a well-contested bout. Thought we feel that Cody Rhodes will display his character well, this storyline still has some legs and won’t hurt either way.

REY MYSTERIO 12; Cody Rhodes 2.

No Holds Barred Match with Undertaker’s Streak on the line
The Undertaker vs. Triple H

Dave S. – UNDERTAKER

Mike T. – UNDERTAKER

Josh B. – TAKER

Ryan R. – The Streak will never be broken! TAKER will be 19-0 after Sunday!!

Anthony V. – THE UNDERTAKER. I am sure of it after the promo they had on Monday Night Raw. Triple H gains nothing if he breaks it, and the Undertaker would lose everything if he loses it.

Greg M. – UNDERTAKER. Lots of questions surrounding this match, like how long it’ll be, and where they’ll put it on the card, but there’s no doubt about the result.

Matt O. – UNDERTAKER

Nicholas G. – TAKER

Jose M. – UNDERTAKER

Evan O. – UNDERTAKER

Gregory W. – UNDERTAKER

Clinton B. – THE UNDERTAKER

Darragh O. – THE UNDERTAKER

Randy M. – THE UNDERTAKER

CONSENSUS: C’mon readers? Do any of you think that THE UNDERTAKER’S streak ends tonight? Triple H will try to give his best effort, but The Undertaker will go 19-0.

THE UNDERTAKER 14; Triple H 0.

*** CHAMPIONSHIP MATCHES ***
Singles Match for the WWE United States Championship
Sheamus (c) vs. Daniel Bryan

Dave S. – SHEAMUS

Mike T. – SHEAMUS

Josh B. – SHEAMUS

Ryan R. – SHEAMUS

Anthony V. – SHEAMUS. I expect this to be a very good match, as both work very well together in the ring. The WWE likes a big guy with a unique look, and Sheamus fits the mold.

Greg M. – SHEAMUS. I’ve got the feeling that Sheamus is going to drop this belt at-or-around the Draft (in two weeks, I believe).

Matt O. – BRYAN.

Nicholas G. – SHEAMUS

Jose M. – SHEAMUS

Evan O. – SHEAMUS

Gregory W. – SHEAMUS

Clinton B. – SHEAMUS

Darragh O. – SHEAMUS

Randy M. – SHEAMUS

CONSENSUS: We mostly agree that this match will be a very good one, but Sheamus has only been the champion for a short period of time. All but one member of the staff predicts that SHEAMUS, the champion, retains. Regardless of who wins, this should be a good match.

SHEAMUS 13; Daniel Bryan 1.

Singles Match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship
Edge (c) vs. Alberto Del Rio

Dave S. – DEL RIO

Mike T. – DEL RIO

Josh B. – ALBERTO DEL RIO

Ryan R. – I’ve been saying it ever since Royal Rumble, ALBERTO DEL RIO will be the champion after Mania!!! It’s his destiny!!!!

Anthony V. – DEL RIO. Edge has been the champion for quite a while, and honestly I am not really digging this latest run. Del Rio has some reinforcements that will be a part of the match, and when the match ends Del Rio achieves his destiny.

Greg M. – EDGE. Del Rio is Cena non nom. This has been a feud to establish him as a main eventer, not to strap a rocket to his @$$.

Matt O. – DEL RIO

Nicholas G. – DEL RIO

Jose M. – ALBERTO DEL RIO

Evan O. – ALBERTO DEL RIO

Gregory W. – ALBERTO DEL RIO

Clinton B. – EDGE.

Darragh O. – EDGE

Randy M. – ALBERTO DEL RIO

CONSENSUS: For months, ALBERTO DEL RIO talked about his destiny to be a World Champion. After WrestleMania, most of the WrestleView staff believes that Del Rio destiny will be fulfilled. Expect the Del Rio wink after this match is over with the championship around his waist.

ALBERTO DEL RIO 11; Edge 3.

Singles Match for the WWE World Championship
The Miz (c) vs. John Cena

Dave S. – CENA

Mike T. – CENA

Josh B. – CENA

Ryan R. – In times like this I would side with the Miz, but seeing how its WWE and they love their babyface yabba dabba fruity pebble, I’m going to pick CENA. However, I would love to see the Rock whoop that no talented @$$ of his all over Atlanta! “If ya smell what the Rock is cookin!!”

Anthony V. – CENA. I think this has a “Mike Tyson feel” that we all think that Rock will attack Cena only to lay the Rock Bottom on The Miz.

Greg M. – CENA. Miz has had an outstanding run with the belt, and has cemented himself as the real deal. Mission accomplished for this title reign, so there’s no need to keep it on him. Not only that, but it’s Cena, and Mania. He’s never lost one-on-one at Wrestlemania, and the time for that has not yet come.

Matt O. – CENA

Nicholas G. – CENA

Jose M. – JOHN CENA

Evan O. – JOHN CENA

Gregory W. – JOHN CENA

Clinton B. – JOHN CENA.

Darragh O. – JOHN CENA

Randy M. – JOHN CENA.

CONSENSUS: Most of the time the top star of the company ends up winning the match. Even though The Miz has been a solid competitor and a worthy champion, the WWE World Title will go back to its rightful owner, JOHN CENA. Now the question will be “What will The Rock do during the match?”

JOHN CENA 14; The Miz 0.
