Before Mr. V begins typing thousands of words for your reading pleasure I would like to say a much heartfelt congratulations to Hunter Golden (one of the men that hired me) and his wife. In case you did not know, Hunter Golden's wife this past week gave birth to a healthy and beautiful baby girl! All I can say is enjoy the journey and from experience I do hope that you get some sleep this week. I for one can still remember the birth of my daughter like it was yesterday (and that happened when Italy won the World Cup nearly four years ago). Enjoy the journey, Mr. and Mrs. Golden. Many years of blessings to look forward to in the future.

Introduction

This week, I got a good bit of e-mails but did not get an introduction. So I will leave this blank today.

Even though I am nearing the busiest parts of being a professional wrestling journalist, I welcome you all to ?From the Desk of Mr. V part 60 (or LX for my students that like Roman numbers). I am your resident teacher of WrestleView Anthony J. Valvo and I am here once again to write about the good and the bad of the week in professional wrestling.

So students, please have a seat. Grab a cup of coffee and also an icepack or two if you went out on St. Patrick's Day. School is in session and I once again will be in attendance.

Quote of the Week

Teacher's Lecture

1) CM Punk's amazing promo on Friday Night Smackdown

Last Friday on Smackdown, Rey Mysterio brought his family down the ring and introduced us to them. After Rey told us who his son (who is taller than he is), daughter, and wife were and the crowd was pretty over throughout the whole deal. Rey's daughter celebrated her ninth birthday and the crowd gave her a warm reception. They chanted ?Happy Birthday? to her before we got an arena-wide ?Happy Birthday? song to her. Now at that time I will not lie and said to myself ?Oh my, this is pretty tacky?. Someone needs to interfere with this. Then, CM Punk comes out along with his Straightedge Society members Luke Gallows and Serena.

When the S.E.S. entered I went to my friends and said ?this is going to be entertaining?. CM Punk then finished singing the song like some kind of evil clown or a villain from a horror movie. It was that creepy. At that time, Mysterio's daughter was in tears, clenched to the waist of her mother?.

?That alone made Mysterio's nine year old a better actress than Brooke Hogan was on Impact a week ago.

Punk issued a challenge to Mysterio right in front of his family. He then really sounded crazy when he said to Mysterio's children about not having to see or hear their father get beat up. Punk then questioned Mysterio's desire to the challenged and later on smacked Mysterio across the head! Mysterio did not accept the challenge and walked away with his family while Punk sang ?Happy Birthday? once again.

It was creepy, psychotic, and overall the best promo CM Punk ever executed. Yes, even better than when he ripped on Jeff Hardy for his drug abuse issues (which was one of the reasons why Jeff Hardy is now wrestling AJ Styles on the other Monday show and not being the Most Popular Wrestler in the WWE). CM Punk's delivery and his voice tone were perfect here.

I think this was perfect build-up to their upcoming match at WrestleMania (though not officially announced it will happen). Punk made this personal and then went the extra mile on this one. Though Smackdown was ?pretty average? overall, this promo stood out and I think this feud could go a few months past WrestleMania.

2) Chris Jericho + NXT = Perfection

All I could say about NXT on March 16 was that it was mainly a great show. The opening tag team match, Matt Hardy and Justin Gabriel vs. Darren Young and CM Punk), was easily the best tag team match of 2010 for the WWE. I had to mention ?WWE? so I don?t get hit with spitball, paper ball, or even cats (yes cats)!

The one thing that almost ruined it for me was Michael Cole's complete disregard to research his work as a commentator. I am sure it is a gimmick that he played out, but I found it annoying and it almost ruined the show for me. Josh Mathews, of course, was pretty spot on and knew his work.

But that is not the reason why I put ?Chris Jericho + NXT = Perfection? on the headline. It was mainly because Chris Jericho did not have to do anything but yell at the commentators to do their job and hype up Wade Barrett. I absolutely found this revitalizing after the last half of the show was not going great. I actually had to stop taking notes so I could laugh a little bit. Whoever booked NXT and told Vince ?we need Chris Jericho on this show? should get not only a Gold Star, but lifetime employment.

Jericho, in my opinion at least, has to be the Superstar of 2010 so far. The man works hard each week and gives us his best effort on whatever show he appeared on. He has done a fantastic job on NXT and is always one of the highlights for that show. It was a perfect fit and I can only hope we see more of Jericho on NXT (along with Wade Barrett, he is still not a bad wrestler).

3) The in-ring return of Jeff Hardy

Look, it is easy to say ?wow, TNA was terrible because they got a .8 on Monday?. Yes, that is a terrible rating and now many should question why TNA is going head-to-head with Monday Night Raw (I know Steve Austin was the host and maybe that was why many swayed to WWE this past Monday).

However, I need to look at the positives on each show. I honestly thought TNA on 3/15 was way better than TNA on 3/8. One of the big reasons was the return of Jeff Hardy (who probably is in court at the time I am typing this column). Jeff Hardy got a very strong reception from the crowd and really did not have to say much to hype up his match because AJ Styles did a fantastic job on the mic on Impact's opening segment.

I for one did not expect Jeff Hardy to do above average work on Impact last Monday. I thought he would be sloppy for not wrestling since last summer when CM Punk beat him in a cage match. I don?t know if it was AJ Styles that made him look good, but Jeff Hardy looked pretty strong in his return to TNA. Jeff was spotty, but it was controlled spots that helped make the contest believable.

I think I will not explain what Hardy did at this time, because when my next column comes up this match could very well receive the ?Distinguished Honor Roll? match (it will definitely be in the Honor Roll). Jeff sold well for the most part and his signature moves were crisp. Too bad this match was not live because obviously many read the spoilers. But sometimes reading the spoilers does not do a match justice.

4) Who Mr. V believed had the better show on Monday? (Raw w/Austin or Impact w/Jeff Hardy)

Well, I won?t do a scoreboard this time around. If you want more in-depth analysis, check out David Stephens? Recap for Raw and Josh Boutwell's for Impact. I have read many recaps, and I must say that WrestleView did their homework because Stephens and Boutwell are amazing writers.

TNA offered a lot of build-up for Destination X and they did it very quickly. The segments were above average and their matches as a whole were average (however two matches really stood out, you could probably guess which ones).

WWE offered Steve Austin, three main event quality contests, and the ?Contract Signing? of Vince McMahon and Bret Hart. Even though HHH vs. Orton ended in a no contest, I found the transitions in this match to be much better than their encounter at Wrestlemania 25.

Two shows had great buildup for their pay-per-view shows, but I gave a slight advantage to Monday Night Raw once again for a couple of reasons. One was the overall average grade for each match (Raw averaged an overall C+, while Impact averaged out a C). The other one was the main event quality build-up for WrestleMania compared to Destination X. Still, TNA should not be disappointed with last Monday's show, even though they only scored a 0.8 (which in Pennsylvania's Grade Point Average System is a D.)

Detention

The following companies, people, or commercial have been a nuisance all week. For that, all mentioned have earned a week in Mr. V's Detention

ETS and the Praxis Series ? You are welcome for the $155.00 that I will be paying you very soon to take a test in which you all probably don?t even know the answers too. Such a scam.

Derek Anderson ? For saying that Cleveland does not deserve a championship. Even though I am not a fan of the Browns, those are some pretty rude comments.

Tim Tebow ? I can?t stand all these sports media outlets that think the former Florida Gators QB is this big deal. He won?t even be drafted in the first three rounds and he is getting more attention than his counterparts Sam Bradford, Jimmy Clausen, and Colt McCoy.

WWE ? I am really impressed with the WrestleMania card, but where is Kofi Kingston right now? Are you placing him in Money in the Bank? Something? Anything?

Michael Cole ? Though he was pretty good in commentary last week (see Commentator Report Card), Cole went back to being as annoying as ever this week. If his job is to get the viewers on our nerves, then he is doing a great job with that.

Nasty Boys ? Why are they still employed by TNA? Oh that is right?

Hulk Hogan ? I don?t know if it is TNA or Spike, but even taped or live a 1.0 rating does not mean your show is going to ?war? with WWE.

Brooke Hogan ? Rey Mysterio's nine-year-old girl acts better than you.

Weekly Dunce Cap of Doom goes to?Ric Flair!! Due to your recent battle with your wife (which many joke that you finally put someone over in wrestling) , the fact that you punched yourself in the head and it started to bleed, and finally flicked some of your blood to the TNA fans in attendance I proudly give you this week's Dunce Cap of Doom award. I enjoyed his work from years past, but sadly he does not know when it is over.

Dunce Cap Alumni include: Hulk Hogan, Michael Cole, JV Rich, and Jimmy Hart.

That is actually it for detentions. Nothing really got me rolling my eyes this past week and I was not really disappointed. With two PPVs coming up (three if you are counting ROH), all of them recently did a pretty good job building up their shows. I will be purchasing all three (Destination X, WrestleMania XXVI, and ROH's Big Bang).

Mr. V's Honor Roll for the week of March 8 ? March 14, 2010

Here was Mr. V's schedule in regards to grading these matches.

3/8 - Graded WWE Monday Night Raw and TNA Impact matches
3/9 - Graded WWE NXT Matches
3/10 - Column Writing. After that, I watched ROH on YouTube and recap the show.
3/11 - Graded WWE Superstars.
3/12 - Graded Smackdown Matches
3/13 - OFF DAY
3/14 - Graded FCW Matches (No FCW grades this week, I did not get the show on time)

If I get FCW next week, I will add those grades to my grade book next week. My apologies.

There were some good matches this past week, but there were some bad as well. As usual, I will focus on the top three matches that are worthy of being in Mr. V's Honor Roll. As for the rest, their performance will be shown in my weekly Grade Book. Enjoy my selections, students.

Distinguished Honors ? Doug Williams vs. Kazarian vs. Daniels, TNA Impact, March 8.

Winner: Doug Williams via pinfall on Daniels. Williams executed his finisher (Chaos Theory) and retained his X Division Title in this match.

Thoughts: Most of Impact on March 8th was pretty uneventful. However right after Eric Bischoff cut a promo about the X Division, he booked the match above immediately after the promo. I put ?This is X? in my notebook because it clearly demonstrated how TNA used the X Division in the past. All three men put it on the line that night and the results were strong.

Kazarian returned (he was the Suicide character last year) and showed the viewers what we missed. I was real impressed with the way he used his dropkicks and various springboard maneuvers (especially the springboard legdrop he did on I believe Daniels).

Daniels put on a solid showing as well. He was the heel in this match and was very good. He executed a nice dropkick in the beginning of the match on Williams and was able to plant Kazarian down with a perfect Death Valley Driver. He attempted the Best Moonsault Ever (B.M.E.), but was unsuccessful. Though he generated the fewest moves in the match, Daniels finally got himself back in the picture in TNA and will put on a good show at Destination X.

Doug Williams to me is a perfect X Division Champion in this new regime for TNA. He can fly, brawl, and even be technical when he needed to. On March 8, he needed to be quick on his offense to overcome these two original members of TNA's X Division. He used quick European uppercuts and was very aware around the ring. His finisher is one of the best in the business right now and in my opinion he deserved the victory. For many people on the Internet saying that Hogan gave up on The British Invasion I say are fools. That alone should tell you that guys who post the news on WrestleView (Adam and Steve usually) really do their homework before posting the news in pro wrestling.

High Honors ? Kenny King vs. El Generico, ROH on HDNet, March 8.

Winner: Kenny King via pinfall. King finished off Generico with the Super Royal Flush (TKO off the top turnbuckle). King advanced to the second round of the ROH TV Title Tournament thanks to this victory.

Grade: B.

Thoughts: Usually the main events for this program don?t disappoint. This past week, ROH had a great show and it ended with this match.

El Generico, according to Colt Cabana, is getting better mentally since Kevin Steen (his former tag team partner) turned on him. Generico showed little signs of being down and was hitting his stride very well in this contest. Before he lost the match to King, Generico executed a Coast-to-Coast Somersault dropkick! It was a thing of beauty and one of the best moves I have seen this year. He was technical in the ring and took a few calculated risks as well. Overall, it was a good match on his side.

Someone in ROH must be reading my recaps because not too long ago I said that Kenny King could break out very soon. If Austin Aries is really teaching the guy, then Aries must be a great teacher. King was able to work a part of the body on Generico (the arm particularly). His quickness was featured as well; most notably when he would hit is snap suplex and instantly follows up with punches. King is a gifted athlete in the ring that is compared to WWE's Shelton Benjamin. The finish on King's part was great. He kicked out of a devastating coast-to-coast dropkick and was keen to know that the referee was near the ropes when Generico was going up to the top rope. King shoved the ref to the ropes and got Generico off balance. The result was the Super Royal Flush and it ended the best match on HDNet this past week.

Honors ? Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase Jr. vs. Randy Orton, Monday Night Raw, March 8.

Winners: Rhodes and DiBiase via pinfall. DiBiase hit Dream Street (Cobra Clutch Slam) on Orton.

Grade: B.

Thoughts: All three men had a solid outing from start to finish, and I give full credit to Orton for putting these two youngsters over. This match continued the bitter feud between the teacher (Orton) and his students (Ted and Cody). Overall, it was great wrestling inside and outside the ring. They told a great story which will eventually lead to a triple threat match with the three former faction members at WrestleMania XXVI.

Orton looked like he had a legitimate chance to win that contest. He attacked before the bell ring to get an early advantage, and that was a great way to start this encounter. He was very good at wearing down DiBiase and Rhodes with clotheslines and kicks, but in the end it did not matter.

Rhodes and DiBiase were pretty good in this match as well. The both demonstrated great tag team chemistry that got better each time they were in the ring. Rhodes executed the dropkick well and was good on his punches. Though Rhodes has improved a ton since this tag team formed, DiBiase really stood out between the two. DiBiase was near perfect with his offense, including a great dropkick outside the ring that caught Orton square in the face. Plus, DiBiase got the pin victory. That said, I think DiBiase could be the favorite in the Triple Threat match at WrestleMania.

Commentator Report Card

The Week I graded the performance and evaluated the commentary teams of Monday Night Raw and WWE NXT. Michael Cole did play-by-play duties for both shows. Jerry Lawler did color commentary for Raw. Josh Mathews did color commentary on NXT.

I graded the performances based on what I saw from the March 8, 2010 edition of Monday Night Raw and the March 9, 2010 edition of WWE NXT.

Team Monday Night Raw (March 8, 2010)

Michael Cole ? C+

Jerry Lawler ? D

Overview: I observed both Lawler and Cole this March 8, 2010 when Monday Night Raw was live in Portland.

Since Cole was awarded Worst Commentator of 2009 by not only Mr. V but The Wrestling Observer, he actually got better. He did a solid job telling a story between the matches and at times during the match. He only used ?Vintage? a couple times, which I am ok with since last year he used it too much in inopportune times.

He occasionally called the action, but at times he went off topic at the wrong time. He sounded scripted and lacked emotion when I thought it was necessary to show it. However, he was at his best when he called the Orton vs. Legacy match. I found out then that Cole really does a good job when the action is slow-paced so he can get in ?plugs? or ?questions to Lawler?. However when the match is quick, he usually is really off. The quick matches hurt the grade, however when the match was level he did a admirable job. Overall, I think he needs to work on his delivery in the shorter matches and stay on pace with the moderately longer ones. He improved a ton since 2009, no doubt. But he could be better.

Jerry Lawler was not at his game tonight, he seemed out of it. He had no passion and is well behind in his commentary compared to Josh Mathews and Matt Striker.

He is like that 60-year-old grandfather that wants the best looking diva when he calls Diva's matches now. You might as well turn off his microphone because he is not funny and he ruins the match with his catcalling tactics. It is embarrassing.

The only moves he called were the obvious. He rarely provided knowledgeable feedback and for the first time in months, I felt bad for Cole. Cole was at least a bit energetic, but Lawler did not have it this week.

Team NXT (March 9, 2010)

Michael Cole ? B-

Josh Mathews ? B+

Overview: I observed both Cole and Mathews during their commentary on March 9, 2010.

Cole was pretty good here, much better than on Raw the previous night. He called more moves in one hour of this show than he did in two hours from Raw. He told the story pretty well for the most part and his transitions to Mathews was done pretty well.

The only thing that needed to improve on Cole's part was that he still sounds like a tattletale in the ring (remember when Carlito spat apple on Slater?). He also talked about how noble it was to get apple spat in your face. I was just confused by all that.

Overall, he did a pretty good job and was pretty emotional throughout the night. He did not quip too much on Daniel Bryan (which got on my nerves at one point) and did not instigate anything with Josh Mathews. At least last week, Cole did a pretty good job.

Josh Mathews is the wild card in commentary. He had good and bad times on ECW, but as a color commentator he is believable. He can relate to these ?rookies? thanks to his work on Tough Enough (though he did not win at least he is employed and not selling Cat Litter Boxes like Maven). He analysis was spot-on, but at times he did not go further into detail about a hold or two.

To conclude on Cole and Mathews, I think they would work so well on Raw as well (though Striker is a better fit for Monday Nights). They both were pretty crisp on delivery and rarely had a bad moment. Here is hoping that continues during this season of NXT.

Those that will be graded on March 25, 2010: Team FCW and Team TNA.
Those that will be graded on April 1, 2010: Team Smackdown and Team ROH.

(If I can?t grade FCW, then next week it will only be for TNA. Again, sorry but I usually have to go through the Internet to find FCW as I do not have the Bright Sports Network)

Mr. V's Gold Star Segment (Presented by: JR's Family Bar-B-Q! I must say that the one thing I never plugged was JR's Beef Jerky. I finally got a taste of this quality meat product and it does put Jack Link's to shame! For $19.88 and free shipping, you can purchase some quality stuff created by the best commentator in the business! Pick some up today at www.jrsbarbq.com).

Quite a good bit of Gold Stars this week that needs to be handed out. So, here are the wrestlers, people, and even students that earned the right to receive one gold star from this desk once again.

Hunter Golden, Mrs. Golden, and Baby Girl Golden ? Wishing you all great times and great memories with your new addition. Let the journey begin for the parents :)

Jeff Springer ? He used to send me many e-mails since my early days as a columnist on WrestleView. Now, thanks to fellow recappers Mr. Springer has now become the newest member of The Faculty. He is our new WWE Superstars recapper and I thought his first recap was excellent. Give it a look right here. To all the students that e-mailed me and told me that you applied for the job too I am sorry that all did not get the position. Still, I am proud of Mr. Springer and don?t worry students, you all can still be a part of the WrestleView students? part of the picks.

Dave Stephens and Josh Boutwell ? For quickly getting recaps done for Raw and Impact. Both men should get e-mails praising their work, as in my opinion they are two of the hardest working men in pro wrestling journalism at this time.

Jeff Hardy ? For making a great return to the Impact Zone last Monday.

The Miz ? He really is generating heat because of his treatment towards Daniel Bryan. Miz should not be punished, but praised because he is really riling up the WWE (and independent) fans out there

Daniel Bryan ? His match against the Great Khali was actually decent. When you can have a decent match with Khali, then you should earn a winner's check from WWE.

Chris Jericho ? He is brilliant at yelling to the NXT announcers. MORE! Anyone notice that he almost laughed after he screamed at Cole and Mathews the second time he went there.

TNA ? Though the show only generated a .8, I watched it on Monday and I was not disappointed. Still, you guys have a lot of work ahead of you.

Amazing Red ? A fantastic flip off a ladder during the X Division Promo, just fantastic!

CM Punk ? For cutting a promo on Rey Mysterio's family that even made me cringe.

ROH ? March 8th may have been all about TNA and WWE, but ROH had a show too in a letter known HDNet and really built up their next PPV (go on their website for info on getting the PPV on your computer, it is only $14.99 and it will be great wrestling).

Hulk Hogan ? For not wrestling on the 15th

Shane Douglas ? For his comments about the Monday Night Wars on Facebook.

Randy Orton ? First Kofi Kingston, now he is helping Legacy get over.

My daughter ? She learned how to read her first sentence! I am actually very proud of her.

Parents that read to their children every night ? The kids are listening, you just don?t know it until they are three.

Syracuse, Duke, Kansas, and Kentucky ? All four colleges made the NCAA Tournament as a #1 seed. I forgot?

Mr. V's Final Four selections ? I don?t know if I wrote this on my WrestleView bracket, but it is: Kansas, Kansas State, West Virginia, and Baylor. Kansas beats West Virginia in the finals 71-57.

Pitt and Robert Morris ? My two local teams that made it to ?The Big Dance?. Pitt won?t be too bad. Robert Morris got a tough draw against Villanova. But Robert Morris will have an opportunity to do what Pitt did not do last year, beat Villanova in the NCAA Tournament.

DVR ? How did I not purchase you a year ago?

Michael Phillips, Jamel Watson, Gregory Walek, and Michael Fox ? For doing their homework on time. Gold Stars to all of you!

Homework Assignment (from last week)

1) In case you did not know yet, I will be co-hosting a show alongside the bright mind of David Stephens called ?The Teacher's Lounge?. We are going to go through random topics in the shortest amount of time, however we need an idea. What kind of games should Dave and I attempt for our upcoming show?

Ideas could be: Toss Up (who we would prefer in a given situation), Rank ?Em (where we rank wrestlers, singers, or whatever), and of course we are planning a ?Mail Time? segment (where we read e-mails from the students of WrestleView).

If you enjoy ESPN's Pardon the Interruption, you will clearly enjoy our show. Think of us as Tony Kornheiser and Michael Wilbon, except that we both have the best hair in the radio business.

And if you like those ?5 Good Minutes? segments on PTI, just to let you know we are doing the same thing for our show. We already got a few names lined up and all I can promise you is that it will be absolute enlightenment.

Dismissal

Well, that does it for me this week. I thank you all for reading and I hope you enjoyed this column as much as I typed it out. If you want to get a hold of me during the week, please e-mail me at mistervwv@hotmail.com or by leaving me a message on Facebook. I did respond to all your e-mails this week and I was happy to do so since I got this upgrade on my computer.

Now, students you are allowed to leave the classroom. Please push in your chairs, line up straight, and exit to the closest door around you. Until my Ring of Honor recap or Predictions from the Faculty, you are??DISMISSED!

Mr. V does read e-mail, so drop the teacher a line: mistervwv@hotmail.com.

Look for Mr. V on Facebook under Anthony J. Valvo in the Pittsburgh Network

If you enjoy Mr. V's WrestleView columns, then take a look at my work on my other site Examiner.com

Check out my recent Examiner articles! Heck, you can even subscribe to my articles! Help me earn a little bit more cash by just going to the link, please. I have been updating my page each week with recaps and if it continues to be successful, who knows what I will do.

Also, be sure to look out for ?The Teacher's Lounge?, coming soon to The WrestleView Radio Network.

Finally to end this column, I would like to thank those who read all of my work. My ROH Recaps are still among the most viewed and my Examiner page is among the top 5 among all examiners in the Pittsburgh Area. This is the most motivated I have been in writing in some time, so thanks to all of you.

If not for the students, there would be no Mr. V. Thanks for reading my column.
